I've not done much recently but sailed from Barcelona to Mallorca a while ago with my dad, not a huge trip - took about 36 hours, but that was on the same type of boat I think you're talking about, a classic 27ft sailing boat like this one:

It was the perfect size for the journey and day trips afterwards, but not sure how much fun it would be actually living on for 4 months, I'd definately keep it to 2/3 men max.
I want to do the classic Canary Islands to Carribean trip sometime in the next few years, sailing across the Atlantic has been on my bucket list for a long time! I'll be doing a few RYA courses before then though, and likely go as crew with a more experienced sailor on their boat. Good luck, looking forward to the trip report!
