If you value your first amendment, second amendment, and equal protection under the law, then you lost a great defender of those freedoms today.

I don't care how fat he is his or if CattleRustler thinks he was a closet homo, it's his actions that counts, and to quote gladiator, it is our actions that echo in eternity.

Rest in Peace Scalia.

Already confirmed "leaked" that Obama will seek justice despite election year.

Well, that was quick.

Wouldn't the GOP allow the Dems to torpedo Trumps presidency by installing a person who would be against his policies? They could ride out a Trump presidency and make him a laughing stock with that power?

Trump would then have to go after the Supreme court.

He can't really avoid it. The election is up for grabs at this point, and no one can be certain what the outcome will be. From the Democrats perspective, if they lose the election, with a house and senate under Republican control, a republican pres will pick a candidate that's not good for them. The Republicans might as well go for it, because Obama has no choice but to pick a decent candidate, not another shitlib SJW. Even if the Democrats win the election, they're still in the same boat. No Kagans, Ginsburgs, or Sotamayors will pass Senate approval. So why not knock it out now. We're a year from a new president taking office. Why wouldn't they fill the vacancy? Most vacancies are filled in a mater of 1-3 months.

I'm not going to be conscripted into saying how sorry I am for him and his family; that isn't what I feel. Actually, this basically is my reaction:

I really, really hope you're right on this one. There's always the possibility that Obama will think he's got nothing to lose and name a complete SJW to the court. Right now the left is firmly in power, and they are well aware of that fact.

I get the distinct feeling that Justices, both liberal and conservative, decide a case based on their personal prejudices, and then go hunting for whatever bullshit legal sounding justification they can throw together to rationalize it and give the appearance that they have made a reasoned and impartial decision based in the law.

This is how everyone thinks, not just justices. People have an intuition or gut feeling and then use reason to backwards rationalize their prejudices.

Regardless of how you feel about the man's ideas or conservativism, if you're an American you shouldn't be disrespecting the Supreme Court as an institution by lauding the death of one of its justices.

If Sotomayor died you wouldn't find me saying "good riddance," if only because these people are legal experts who very often look past personal opinions to check our rampaging government and defend this country's founding document.

Sometimes you might not agree with them, but they serve one of the most professional insitutions left in America's government. To celebrate any of their deaths is classless and immature. These liberals celebrating Scalia's death and calling him a piece of shit because he has different views is ridiculous and sad. At least to me.

It's really very simple: Good riddance from the Court (my political opinion) but my sympathies and respect to his family (my personal opinion). Anyone happy he passed away is sick in the head.

Wait.

To the people celebrating this, you do realize that Obama/Hillary/Sanders will replace him with a radical SJW, right? A radical SJW that would have NO problem eroding many of the rights granted to us by the constitution.

The 1st amendment protects our rights to free speech and the freedom of the press. A SJW judge will get in there and have their lawyer pals bring cases to the court that seek to chip away at these important freedoms. In many other Western countries they have eroded the rights to free speech and now you cannot criticize, critique, or question a big list of protected classes. Example of protected classes: feminist, immigrants, gays, transsexuals, pedophiles, any minority group, any religious group that isn't Christian, any political opinion besides right/conservatism, and more.

I can't think of anything more terrible than losing the rights to free speech. Hell, this forum may no longer be able to exist in the near future. Look already how the media has attacked us with lies. This forum and Return of Kings will probably be the first to be shutdown when our freedoms of speech are curtailed.

It may not be a good thing.

There had been some talk about Obama getting an appointment to the Supreme Court if Hillary became President. Now there is a vacancy on the court, and if they keep the slot open, and Hillary wins the election, it is possible.

Just seems incredibly early to say that. This isn't even 12 hours old. You would think it would be announced within a statement recognizing Scalia's contribution during the WH press secretaries afternoon meetings. Or Obama would hold a press conference sometime next week.

Disclosure: I'm a borderline conspiracy theorists so any idea floated that Scalia was targeted, I'll probably buy.

Obama referred to Scalia as a "brilliant legal mind" and promised to nominate a successor in due time.

Cruz and Rubio called for the next president to choose the successor- what a surprise. [Image: sleepy.gif]

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arch...ma/462747/

Quote:

President Obama called Justice Antonin Scalia, who died suddenly on Saturday at the age of 79, a “brilliant legal mind with an energetic style, incisive wit, and colorful opinions,” and said he intends to fulfill his constitutional responsibility and nominate a successor in due time.

“He influenced a generation of judges, lawyers, and, students, and profoundly shaped the legal landscape,” Obama said of Scalia. “He will no doubt be remembered as one of the most consequential judges and thinkers to serve on the Supreme Court.”

And, the president added: “Obviously, today is the time to remember Justice Scalia’s legacy. I plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time. There will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and timely vote.”

The president’s remarks cap the partisan debate that erupted almost as soon as news of the conservative justice’s death broke. Republicans fear that an Obama nominee to replace Scalia, who was nominated by President Reagan, would tilt the balance of the Supreme Court, which has four reliably conservative justices, four liberals, and one swing vote. Democrats hope an Obama appointment achieves precisely that.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, said the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Scalia’s death should be filled by the next president. Harry Reid, the Senate minority leader, urged Obama to “send the Senate a nominee right away.”

Presidential candidates from both parties weighed in as well

Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, both Republican candidates for the presidency, called for the next president to choose Scalia’s replacement on the Supreme Court. Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, said those who call to keep the seat vacant until after the next president is sworn “dishonor our Constitution.”

Obama’s remarks Saturday set up a prolonged fight with Republicans that, as my colleague Russell Berman reported, will play out both on Capitol Hill and on the campaign trail.
