Phillipines: cheap island with nightlife, cheap, beach
01-13-2016, 05:07 AM
Hi, I'm currently in Manila and just met up with rocker and Z. (good times). Although I'm having fun I have to get out of this city: I'm spending too much money.
I'm looking for a city in Philippines (or SEA) where I can set up shop for at least a month. To be able to work and get my business together I want to have a comfortable lifestyle as possible, similar to what I did in Europe for the last year. This would mean:
- cheap living (Manila and especially Makati are too expensive)
- pedestrian friendly and ample public or taxi transport
- nightlife
- whole day electricity and wifi (i heard that on some islands there's only electricity for a few hours each day)
- preferably a beach on walking distance
- dating market which is similar or better then makati (online dating is like playing darts on a 2 cm distance from the board: it's impossible not to score)
I considered Davao and Palawan, but no nightlife.
Locals tell me conflicting stories about Cebu and Boracay. The more experienced forum members, can any one of you please recommend based on what I wrote above where I should go?

Cebu City has everything you're looking for besides a decent beach. You could try the beaches in nearby Lapu-Lapu but in my experience they are shit. Your best bet would be to take a daytrip to Bohol when you're in a beachy mood; it's a two hour, 800 peso round trip ferry from what I can remember. Great beaches but I suggest you bring your favorite girl, the quality in Bohol is lacking.
This should probably be in the Philippines thread.

Putting the rest of your list aside for a moment, you really expect to find a beach location in the Philippines with similar online dating prospects to....Makati?
I think you should go back to sleep. You're dreaming.

Yeah, I'm subscribing to this thread in case somebody finds a place like that. Doesn't have to be in the Philippines either, anywhere in the world will do.

I think there's no doubt that you want it to be cheap since you mentioned it twice in the title of the thread.

Manila is definitely an overcrowded polluted shit-hole but the easiest place in the world to get laid.
This post made me laugh. Especially these things combined:
- dating market which is similar or better then makati
- cheap living
- preferably a beach on walking distance
- pedestrian friendly and ample public or taxi transport
hahaha

^^Thanks, the contribution I was hoping for.
The pedestrians in Cebu... Is it better then Manilla?
Or can I expect to share the roads with cars/motorbikes everywhere when walking?

^^ Yes for the most part you will be sharing the roads with everything in Cebu. Little sidewalks there except maybe in the vicinity of Ayala Mall and IT Park.
Cebu traffic can get as bad as Manila especially 4PM to 10PM, there are no highways in Cebu and less roads to cope with all the traffic, so staying in the center near Ayala is best and you won't have to deal with it as much as it's all quite close to nightlife area (Mango Square,IT Park etc)

OP, I'm sure you've figured out by now that no such place exists. But you might want to check out the Olongapo/Subic area not too far from you. It's much cheaper than Manila, a city of decent size with alright nightlife and a very modern mall area (Harbor Point/SM Olongapo) and it's a 20 minute jeepney ride to Barrio Barretto, which has decent beaches (for the Phils, anyway.) Harbor Point Mall in particular has a lot of good restaurants that cater to retirees and the U.S. servicemen who like to come ashore from the local naval base and occasionally choke out a tranny.

Borocay nightlife is terrible. I cannot stress this enough. I've checked it out before and almost no locals just some western sausage with a few semipros.
Unless your going during a holiday / festival bring a girl with you go borocay.

I'm at Boracay right now. The beaches are beautiful. It's affordable if you look around. No easy filipino lays but that's good, that gives my dick some time to recover.
After this I'll go for an island that is half as crowded as Boracay. Probably will be less kitsch.

How are you getting any work done there? The WiFi is too slow to check an email most of the time much less work.
On that note, do you mind telling me about your cost of living in makati and the internet speed there?

I didn't have any problems. There would be 1 hour outages sometimes. I think the place I was staying had like one of those smart mini routers.
Cost of living in makati is similar to boracay, only housing is more expensive in makati. Check the phi thread for more detailled info. I'd recommend Cebu over Makati, but that's based on my limited experience and preferences.

Siargao?
I went there with g.f. It's the surfing capital of Phil's. I'm unsure about it in terms of game, but it might be a decent spot to spend some time. I believe they were in the process of getting better internet and a new airport when I was there a few months ago. I was actually thinking about buying a condo there. The fishing and surfing is great out there.
Has anyone been there?
