Anyone invest in gun stocks after violence, political chaos?

Seems like Smith and Wesson for the next month would be a good short term buy.... thoughts?

Anyone succeeded in this? Or buying Home Depot after a hurricane etc?

I have also been thinking about this idea. Should have done it months ago when I first had the idea. Apparently S&W and Ruger bumped up 10% on Monday.

Combine that with more potential terrorist attacks, Hillary and Obama spouting anti-gun messages from now until November and I don't see how they would really go down. I just want insight from somebody with some experience. I'm not much of an investor.

Sat in on the Agora Publishing seminar with Bill Bonner, Porter Stansberry and Chris Mayers "CODE" methodology last night. Of course, they were upselling their new private Investment advisory at 2 years for the price of one if you ordered last night - honestly a bit pricey but some useful take aways:

Two full years of Bonner Private Portfolio for less than the cost of a single year. ($2,200.00 for 2 years ... pricey.

Special Report: The CODE Deciphered: The Secret to Making Four Times Your Money in Any Market ... useful

C - Stocks that are cheap with hidden value example Alexander and Baldwin Shipping controls the majority of land on Maui in the State of Hawaii - Chris and researchers actually went through the Maui Registery of Deeds to verify the extensive land Ownership by A&B - irony is yes they own the land but only have it on their books at $20M Book Value acquired back in 1860 - land now worth multiple Billions.

O - Stocks where the Owner/Managers have skin in the game especially when they earn income based upon increasing shareholder value long term instead of financial engineering - using 0% debt to buy back stocks to drive up market valuations due to stock scarcity - debt that could crush many businesses in a correction or interest rates normalization.

D - Disclosure - if you can not understand the language in the Annual Corporate Reports or SEC quarterly filings - run do not walk to the EXITS example Valeant Pharma crash chart. When they can't actually dazzle you with their brilliance they just try to baffle you with bullshite.

E - Excellent balance Sheets and judicious use of debt if any - no viable company ever when bankrupt that had NO debt.

A FREE hardcover copy of Chris’s latest book: 100 Baggers...

Free PDF download I found on basic Google Search:

Peter Lynch in his famous "One Up on Wall Street" was famous for saying that 2, 3, 4 and even 10 baggers are great but nothing is as life changing as 100 baggers and the PDF above indicates that there are a lot more of them than people realize.

Some useful summer reading that can in-fact change your life - enjoy and thank me later.

Dow futures are crashing big time. As of midnight Thursday, CNN Money has futures at -726. On a bad day, they're usually down -80.

This would be a good time to track good stocks that get hit the hardest and have a good chance of rebounding. Then try to find the bottom and get in on those stocks. The page I linked to above lists the day's biggest losers.

Most of the stocks I am currently tracking cratered in Feb. when the market was down. Had I bought them then, I'd have done really well. These include things like Haliburton and various mutual funds and REITs.

So tomorrow might be a really big buying opportunity if you can stand seeing the stock you already own take a hit.

Yeah, personally I think this move is an overreaction, I sold puts in the ES earlier, the markets were really wide but they've tightened up some now.

I wouldn't be surprised if we rally back tomorrow. But hey, I don't know anything.

jj90, that VIX futures trade is down about $5k, that's why I stay away from that type of trade. There was opportunity to manage a profit in there earlier but if anyone still had it on they're hurting a little now.

Not liking the move in bonds though! I'm short bonds, I just sold puts against my short today, wishing I sold a higher delta now!

It is very troubling to see Etrade and Fidelity offline during this UK/EU fiasco. While this is a big deal this is not 2008. What would happen if we were to see another 2008?

Why are these platforms offline? so the banks can get their bets in first?

True, but how was the marks on that position at the close on the 23rd since the 14th? The decision when to close it out is the trader's call alone.

Everything about brexit is an overreaction.

However, this could have been the big event catalyst that finally sends the market into a much needed bear market cycle.

If you look at the last 6 years there really hasn't been a real significant correction.

The sept 2015, and Feb 2016 drops are nothing. It's not even a significant retracement of the fibonnaci levels if you take into account the huge run from 2009 up to 2015.

I'm thinking of getting into trading with a low start up capital of $500, just to get things started and see how things works (transactions, fees, charting, technical analysis, fundamental etc). I've read a few books on finance and doing an undergrad in business so I have a bit of knowledge of theory and now want to start on the practical. Any specific programs or tools needed to keep up to date with trends and data I should know about? I'll be mainly focusing on ASX and maybe NYSE. Should I do micro trading or Buy low and sell high strategy? Is that even viable with the low capital? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Trading with $500 will just get eaten up by fees/slippage. I recommend intermediate or longer term investing until you build up enough capital.

Yes, I think it's too low as well. Increasing it to $5000 may be better. I'll like to get into future and option trading in the future.

Honestly, $500 startup isn't going to get you anywhere... you should take that money, and keep on buying cases of water at Costco and sell them for $1-$2 outside of events until you have at least a couple thousand in your hands. Or go tutor kids for $20/hr or something. Even if you buy/sell using RobinHood which has no fees, with $500 you're basically only going to be able to buy 1 share at a time and anything approaching three digits is going to eat up 20% of your capital... for one share.

Futures and options contracts are likely going to cost more than the $500, unless you go real long shot out of the money plays. And in my experience, with those vehicles it's been mostly small losses with a few big wins to ultimately offset. Like you said, increase by a factor of 10 if you're going to actively trade around - even then I'm not confident that will be enough although I don't know what your goals are ultimately, but at least you won't be nearly as constrained.

JayD, I agree with what's been said, $500 isn't enough. $5k would be better but's still on the low side.

Also I would stick with the US market, liquidity in the ASX is shit, especially in the options markets. The world trades the US market.

No reason to not trade options straight away though and I encourage it, especially with a smaller account. Options allow you to be more efficient with your capital, increase your probability of success and diversify your portfolio through strategy. I'm talking about selling options not buying. Futures are a different beast and probably take a little more time, they don't make it easy either with all the differences between futures contracts, multipliers, expiries, rolls etc. $5k's not enough to trade futures although there are a few mini contracts around and you can also reduce your size using futures options. You can do spreads in the ES for a couple of hundred buying power reduction so you can start to dabble with a smaller account.

I've been buying cheaper stocks, sub $10 ones that based on research should be future performers. Hertz was one I remember offhand.

Spot is down, but futures are flat to up on back of a dropping mkt. Interesting action indeed, I've only seen this a few times over the years.

^ Yeah, it did close a little rich on Friday but with the market action you'd think it would be a little stronger.

Hopefully we get some good two sided action, future markets are up around 1% at the moment. Selling rallies is my plan this week. After this down move my deltas are too long, I get nervous when I'm long delta, much prefer short delta!

Me buying a stock before Brexit vote was dumb, but it seems silly that them leaving the shitty EU would be a bad thing for our markets.

You can trade on the Forex market but if your not experienced at it I'd recommend treading very carefully. As far as physical pounds, not sure where your at but most places in the states, even banks, charge such a high margin it's not really feasible to invest in physical paper money. You probably have to turn anywhere from a 12% to as much as 25% profit before you even cover the spreads on buying and selling.
