Seems there's no thread here on the Argentinian presidential elections, currently under way... too bad, because some happy, instructive and interesting news have emerged:

The very (almost fanatically) SJW female president, Cristina CFK, has been handed a shock defeat, in the first-round!

She and her followers (the Ks, or Camporistas) expected a first-round victory... but instead, Macri (center-right-wing alpha male) drew even with Scioli (Cris's candidate),... and Anibal "la morsa" F (ultra-leftist Cris favorite), got beaten right away in the "Buenos Aires province"... To sum it up: Macri (de facto allied with Massa) now seems the clear favorite!

So, it is an earthquake moment for South American politics... with this possible come-back of energetic, right-wing, male politicians!
I mean, leftism seemed to be too strong to be defeated in South America just one year ago, but now, suddenly CFK and Dilma are losing their grip on power... interesting turn of events!

It looks like Macri is going to win which would be great for Argentina, but I wouldn't celebrate before next month's runoff. This is Argentina we're talking about, shit happens.

As for Brazil, their economy and finances are fucked for the next few years regardless of if/when Dilma is impeached. After all, her approval rating jumped 15% in the past month. From 7.7 to 8.8%, with 70% disapproval, that is.

Don't know enough politics here but the current currency policy is absolutely stupid. Nobody trusts the currency here. Dollar is actually down in the black market the last few days since Macri is favored to win now.

Good sign. If this shit is getting reversed in Argentina it is indicative of a worldwide trend.

Not really. A free floating currency is right up there with "free" trade and "free" movement of people as things that will fuck your nation up in all but the most perfect circumstances. Ie, always. It is that same ideological bullshit that is screwing with us from facing up to the fact that the world is not an economics textbook, where you can just "assume" reality away from your "model."

For a look at what a currency peg can give you, look no further than the economic development stories of Korea, Japan, and China.

Eddie, you're talking about the advantageous currency peg here (i.e. keeping your currency moderately undervalued), which is NOT what Argentina had before. Their previous situation is best compared to Croatia, whose Kuna is pegged to the Euro between 7.5 and 7.7 kn per eur, but in reality should be more like 20 or 30.

Fair enough. Even in this case though, it's not concept of a currency peg that is the problem but the execution of the concept. Especially as a developing country, you want your currency to be both competitive (ie somewhat undervalued) and stable, and those two things are best achieved through a peg, or at least a controlled float.

Argentina is actually doing the opposite, overvaluing their currency. It has to be preventing some foreign investment. The price of imported products here is insane.(inflation is bad too here) A bottle of imported pasta sauce is like 10 bucks.The country is really only cheap of your buying anything from a cow, fernet, beer and wine. A lot of prices in Palermo are slighty above USA. For example, a regular coffee at starbucks is $4.00. (2.67 in blue dollar, I paid $2.15 in the usa, right before I came)

The peg and the ban on holding dollars here is meant to stop people from saving in dollares. The government prints a lot now and has in the past. The peoples unconfidence in the currency was not created by the current administration but they are certainly not helping. My friends here tell me there was already a black market for cash, so a system was already in place.

The currency peg in these countries right now might look beneficial right now, but any problem with the Us currency and we are bringing them down with us.
