I was at the doctors office the other day and the waiting room was pretty crowded. There was a pretty blonde girl in her 20s sitting across from me who would make funny faces at me and roll her eyes and smile at the behavior of some of the other patients in the waiting room, who couldn't be bothered to put their fucking smartphones down, even when they were called for their appointment. I noticed, amazingly, that this girl was just sitting quietly resting with no phone in her hand all!
I'm sitting across from her and we chat quietly for a little bit about trivia and how we're tired this early in the morning and really wish we had had coffee of something. I gently tease her about the fact that it looks like the shoes she's wearing are bedroom slippers and she just rolled out of bed with them on to come here, and she laughs and agrees. I ask her why she's not checking her text messages and she says that she left her phone in her car because she doesn't really like using it that much. I'm stunned.
My name is called and my appointment is brief, but there's another engagement I have to leave for pretty much immediately after and I'm already running late. I decide I'm going to do something but there are so many people I don't know how to give her my info discreetly, so I jot my cell number down on a slip of paper. As I'm walking out she's going into her appointment and I hand her the slip of paper with my number on it wrapped in a dollar bill and I wink and say "oh hey, let me pay you back for the coffee." She smiles and goes "Oh, hey, excellent thanks a lot!"
Haven't heard anything yet. I feel like I had a solid prospect here but I fucked up the close, but because of the weird environment it happened I was on the spot and didn't really know what to do. Young women are so glued to their phones in waiting rooms usually that the thought there might be one sitting there the other day not using one and willing to talk never really occurred to me. And of course there's the possibility that she just wasn't really interested.
I wish I could have somehow got her number instead as it's probably asking a lot for her to text a strange guy. Anything I could have done differently for future reference? If I had had nothing going on afterwards I probably should have just asked her right in the waiting room if she wanted to go and get coffee right after we both had our appointments, but I couldn't. Damn it.
I've been approaching like mad lately in both real life and online, and going on dates and getting interest, but closing just seems to be my real stumbling block. It sucks to feel like I'm just getting 90% of the way there and then fucking up.
