Recording yourself (a sort of non-published video diary)

Does anyone record themselves on video as a sort of method to improve your outward appearance. Most probably are unaware of how they appear or have an warped version of how they are. Not talking about people giving their opinion on a youtube video diary or anything, but something one can use for personal growth.

From your posture to the way you talk, to your workouts, to your opinions, it can probably help improve the way you converse, talk, etc. Some people say to talk into a mirror, why not a video camera? With storage space so cheap nowadays, it'd be good. And you can log through your years of development, how you sound, what you think and what you look like.

Just thinking if anyone here does this kind of thing. If so, what is the best way to do this?

Set up a dummy Youtube Account set to private?

Use a webcam or possibly a better quality video camera?

Sounds like Krapp's Last Tape. If you don't want to watch the play, I'll break it down.

He records his thoughts and work successes every year of his life on a tape in order to make himself better and remember how successful he has been and will become.

When he gets old and grey and can no longer remember a thing, the only tape that he enjoys listening to is the one where he fucks a woman in a boat and takes a nap on her tits.

That's how it all ends gentleman.

I think you need to share it with someone whose opinion you trust, though.

I don't even feel like I can look at pictures of myself without being inside my own head. This makes it hard to completely see myself as others see me. When other guys, or girls, tell you their honest opinion of your good points and rusty edges it enables you to see yourself a lot clearer and more honestly - kind of like drawing back a curtain.

Your mind is built for self-acceptance and it's too easy to rationalize your ugly aspects in a way that you're never quite sure, even if you're trying your best to honestly see through the self-delusions. On the other hand, some guys, and maybe all guys at some times, are their own worst critics and make mountains out of molehills.

To combat all this, you need outside perspectives.

Whenver I do see videos of me, I kind of am critical. Like "Oh, I need to adjust my posture" or "I need to slow down when I speak" kind of things. These are videos that would be somewhat embarassing to share, like walking around your house or on the street, etc. Videos of you doing pushups by yourself at home. Strange thoughts and videos of how you appear when you talk into a camera.

Leave a go pro on in the corner or on top of a refridgerator while you are cooking a meal, you'd probably open up insights about yourself.

I guess another way to do this is to install a NEST system. You can subscribe for a 7 day feed of your surroundings for like 99 bucks.

How Video History works

With Video History, you never need to remember to press record or switch out memory cards. Nest Cam continuously records and uploads your video securely and privately to the cloud for storage. Depending on your subscription, Video History keeps every frame of video for the past 10 days (240 hours) or 30 days (720 hours). Video History is stored on a rolling basis, meaning that after 10 or 30 days, your oldest recorded video automatically expires, making room for newer video.

Learn more about how recorded video is stored >

Video History stores all of the recorded video for the Nest Cam that your subscription is associated with. If you have more than one Nest Cam, you can purchase additional Video History subscriptions of the same type (10 days or 30 days) at a discounted price.

How to save and share your favorite videos

If your Nest Cam captures an event that you'd like to save, like your baby's first steps, you can create up to 3 hours worth of video clips. Your clips will stay in your Nest Account for as long as you like. You can view them with the Nest app at any time, embed them in Facebook and Twitter posts, and download them as files to store locally or to share with family and friends.

You've got a goldmine of guys here who would give you honest feedback on videos you might otherwise be embarrased to share with people.

I wouldn't post them publicly on the forum if you're looking for sensible feedback, of course - aside from privacy concerns you may have, too much noise from a wide range of posters whose background you don't know (Though I have seen one newbie do that and got great feedback he used to change his life). But sharing them with ones you trust if they're up for it could be beneficial.

For example, I recently joined a Line group of some the more solid members here. I was iffy about my hairline because I've always had a bit of widow's peak and wasn't sure if it was getting more pronounced as I push towards 35. Thought it might be time to shave it and wanted it straight.

Simple share with the group sorted me out and told me where I stand. As long as you're not asking someone to spend hours watching footage of you as you run about your daily life I'm sure you can do something very similar.

I could see the value in what you want to do, though. Private Youtube videos should be enough unless you're super worried about someone cracking in there and embarrasing you.

I record myself when I do dry fire practice with pistols, and rifles. I try to look for unnecessary movement. And I record myself with certain lifts, to make sure my form isn't suffering. And sometimes I record myself when I'm banging the snot out of a broad, because people need to know how strong my Dick Game is.

I think the idea of taking action to keep yourself accountable and not bullshit yourself is an excellent one. I think Beyond Borders' idea to share it with a group of men that will give it to you straight who have no need to lie to you, or equally to put you down unnecessarily, is a fantastic one.

Even if it is just some trivial shit, for example I'm growing some facial hair at the moment and whilst I like it, have no idea if it actually enhances my look, being able to share it with people who are interested in your opinion and don't need to put you down - particularly the older guys here, is a hell of a resource. If you just record it and look at yourself, you're potentially too close to it (as has been said) to make an informed decision. Being able to share aspects of yourself you're trying to work on with guys who are interested in you improving yourself (again, particularly the older ones), might be a far better way of getting objective feedback, assuming you're tough enough to be told something you might not be wanting to hear...
