I think to live in a foreign country for a long period of time you must really like the culture and be eager to learn the language. Also it should be a place where you could enjoy your hobbies or whatever it has to offer. For example if you like to surf living in a place like Bali or Nicaragua could be sick. If you want to make money go to big cities that would provide the best opportunities for you.

Also I think that to live in a country that doesn't speak your native language as a first language you have to really want to learn the language. I lived in brasil for 6 months and enjoyed my time because I like the culture and wanted to learn the language. I've thought about teaching in South Korea but I'm somewhat hesitant because I don't have a lot of interest in their culture and learning the language.

I think those types of things could set you up for a disappointment. If you have a genuine interest in the country ant it's culture and want to learn the language you should be happy at whatever country you choose.

Actually ideally I'd live in a place for 6 - 12 months at a time then move on to somewhere new but it would require having a job that allowed me to work from anywhere.

Unless you're making some strong social connections , or work or living with /making a family with a local in your chosen destination, you end up just "Blowing in the wind" In the end,if you're not close with anyone in the country you end up wondering what's keeping you.

On age: I don't know how old you are, but believe me: If you go for women ten years younger than yourself, this is going to work in many (though not in all) cases. Male looks are important, male height is important - but (male) age is far less important. Don't let the age thing stop you!

On Spain: Many Spanish women are ok, but I prefer to get to know women by cold approach. And the Spanish society is a social-circle-oriented society, less suitable for cold approaches than USA. So you will get more blowouts. It's a cultural thing.

I'm not talking about girls,but overall would you say that the UK sucks?I know lots of (Brazilian/Portuguese)guys and girls who lived for a year or 2 in places like London,Cambridge,brighton and loved it.I love english culture,the music,tradition,football etc..
But some say that on the bad side they found the streets very dirty and that there are many "chavs" and "chavettes"(yup,they told me about it lol)and how they are ugly and retarded.But we have plenty of those types here as well hehe

But Brazil is not this paradise you know,its a developing country so that comes with lots of issues that are far more important then a good weather (in my opinion)...its very different to live in Brazil and to visit Brazil on holidays...but I guess this applies to any given country.

But I have to admit that a small town in the UK will probably suck big time.

I agree with Mr. GM. Be here for a while and do whatever and live here while people do whatever are way different things.

Even though the weather is cooler, more taxes, uglier and more distant people (according to you, never been abroad), things seems to work and people has more chances to be sucessfull. I graduated at the British School here in Rio (meaning that I'm acquainted with british culture, accent, ways etc. for years, and most of my teachers were British, as well as many colleagues) and my mother lived in Birmingham () for 2 years, and I went to visit her on occasion. I've been a number of times to London, and also to Manchester and other cities.

All I have to say is... England sucks. Badly.

What I disliked the most;

-Food. I realised how well I eat here in Brazil, health and taste - wise.
-Culture (wicked and awful sense of humour... not talking about the "classic" british humour. I'm talking about late night shows you watch on tv where you'd only get jokes about sperm and other bodily secretions. ONLY)
-Girls... not my type at all, looks and otherwise. Seem a bit deranged.
-Accent. Really, Birmingham accent is poor...

What I liked:

-Music scene. Loved all the alternative bands.
-Meeting people from around the world.
-You can easily and cheaply travel to other european countries from there.
-I miss a real winter here in Rio. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the summer, but winter has its charm. The place where I experienced the lowest temperatures in my life was England, and the first and only place I saw snow

The only place I actually liked in the UK was Scotland, especially Edinburgh. I really liked it! I liked the accent, the people seemed friendlier and Edinburgh is a beautiful city by the sea, with a castle hanging by a cliff. I think I could live a while in Edinburgh, but deafinitely not London.

England sucks trust me folks. Yes there maybe alot of Brazilians living there but there quality of life is terrible.
You say your friends can't afford there own houses and a so-so car, that would assume they have a job. Getting a job in England is very tough these days and that could also be said for alot of other countries.
The weather is terrible, some weeks you do not even see the sun. In the winter time you leave work and it is already dark.

Ha! You just described Barcelona. Although the Spanish wines dont compare well with their Italian and French counterparts they are pretty good.

Beaches, not beach, go along Costa Brava and there are a number of small towns that have their own beaches and to me they are better than the ones in BCN. A lot of girls from all over Europe come to the city for the beaches.

Decent winter? This is subjective, for me if it doesn't snow then its decent. So, BCN qualifies here as well.

Good food is the only problem. Spanish food is some Paella and then some more Paella. The bakeries cant be compared to the ones in France. If you like cold cuts then you will be happy with the food to some extent.

As for the part where you guys talk about being a corporate slave. It doesn't really have anything to do with the country. I have few friends in Europe and they have pretty decent jobs. I can't say that they are living the high roller lifestyle. They work like dogs, get piss drunk on fridays, nurse a hangover over the weekend and then get back to work again. They earn decent salaries but after all the taxes and expenses they have very little left for themselves.

If food and wine is important to you, then Spain is hard to beat........

Spanish wines are spectacular and some of the best reds in the world are produced in Catalonia and the region of Castilla y Leon.

Food is even better. The regional cuisines of Catalonia and Donostia (Basque) are broadly considered to be some of the best on the planet - don't take my word for it -just check the Guide Michelin for ***/**./* restos in Barcenlona and San Sebastian. The Pescados Fritos of Sevilla are out of this world, and cost next to nothing in a tapas bar along with a plate of Jamon Iberico and a glass of good Rioja. Paella? The dish of Valencia is the regional specialty and absolutely delicious.

Lebanon? Sure, great food and wine but sadly the invasion of Gulf money has made the place prohibitively expensive.

I didn't know that Spain is ranked so high. To be honest, I am not much of a food expert in BCN. I have spent a lot of time in the city and from the point of view of a person who wants to have a quick bite I wouldn't rank it anywhere close to Paris or some Italian city. But you are correct, food is subjective and my favorite in Europe are the French Bakeries and the Italian restaurants. I have been to Italy for only week and I know more about Italian food than I know about Spanish food. But then I never really made an honest attempt to learn more about the food, it just didn't click with me.

Next time I go there I will try out some of the high end restaurants. If you get the time then bust out a data sheet on the eating joints (and Spanish dishes) in BCN. It would be very helpful.

And I forgot to mention one thing about the beaches outside BCN, clothing is optional on most of them.

EDIT: I wasnt living in the Barceloneta area. I dont want to reveal where I was living but it was possible to find Paella in the restaurants in this area.

I really wish I had written down names of restaurants from my last trip, but I can't remember for the life of me the names. I guess I could go find receipts, but honestly I doubt I will go that route.

I don't think you have to hit the high end spots at all, although they are great. I prefer the corner tapas bars for a quick grind session.

I didn't have a single bad meal when I was there.
