F**KING Receding Gums! - Anyone overcome successfully? [PICS INSIDE]

Hey,

I've read another post on this topic, but decided to start my own since it wasn't extensive enough.

My gums are receding rapidly (or at least that how I perceive it) and I am being paranoid about it - to the point where quality of life is impacted due to constant worry.

The worst case scenario, always in the back of my mind, losing my teeth in a couple of years. (I'm only 25 by now.) [Image: sad.gif]

- did a oral hygiene session at the dentist recently
- before that, they did a smear and had to take antibiotics afterwards

It feels like dentists haven't been helpful so far and I've tried 4 in the last couple of months alone.

I've also started following a daily practice consisting of the following
- oil pulling (coconut oil) for 20 minutes
- using sonic toothbrush
- using a water floss

Anyway, it would be highly appreciated if someone with expertise in this area could offer a suggestion on how to proceed.

Thanks!
Tom

The way you brush is a huge factor ...too much to go into but look into it especially around the gums

I had bad recession but have stopped it due to better habits and stuff like this below

interdental brushes (this stuff gets out garbage floss doesn't even come close to )
http://piksters.com/

this is the best stuff hands down I've ever used for sensitivity issues

Watch acidy food/drink (use straw or rinse mouth out with water afterwards)

I've had friends that have gotten grafts before but I think there may be some new advances coming out in the future

As far as cleaning between teeth goes, I am using a powerful water flossing device.

I have no sensitivity issues and usually rinse my mouth after eating or drinking.

Had a big problem worse then yours, family genetics. Had 4 transplants done. Use a Good toothbrush. European mouth rinse called maridoll helps. If you want more pm me.

Agree with hedonist that brushing technique is key. A few years ago I also freaked out when my dentist told me my gums were receding, but after a year of brushing in a gentler oblong motion they were back to normal.

Receding gums are all related to brushing technique. You should be swirling the tooth brush around the tooth very lightly, not back and forth really hard.

Also, you realistically only need to brush and floss right before bed. Flossing is way more important than brushing. There is very little point to brushing in the morning especially before you eat. You've been fasting for 8-9 hours.

If you want to get rid of morning breath, take a 60 second swirl of hydrogen peroxide. Added bonus of being an oral debriding agent so say goodbye to plaque. Much better than brushing with toothpaste.

I had a decent water flosser as well but I found the brushes were better

mind you at the back of my mouth I have some decent sized gaps where the gum has lowered, you can curve them around when you brush to get the edges

Like plan a said genetics do come into play my Dad has bad recession
(unfortunately for me my dentist said I have some of the largest nerves he has seen which doesn't help me in the slightest!!![Image: angry.gif] )

Arrange for a consultation with a Perodontist. Brushing properly is key, don't scrub the gums. Had a transplant done, was painless, only had swelling. I like the results.

It amazes me that most people never learn proper brushing technique.

You brush down on your uppers, and up on the lowers. Never go side-to-side or any other direction that goes against the gum line.

Brush lightly too...you're not cleaning a driveway. Most people over-brush honestly. It takes about 48+ hours for plaque to start forming. So once a day is fine.

7 or 10 years ago my dentist told me I had periodontitis ("inflammation of the tissue around the teeth, often causing shrinkage of the gums") ... I was in my early 20's at the time.

In my case, it was 100% related to how I was brushing my teeth. Even now, if I brush with horizontal strokes on my back teeth, within a couple days the gums will recede enough that it causes sensitivity.

Mine is much much worse than yours, I mean way worse.

Dentist told me bruxism is a large cause as well. Teeth grinding during sleep. I looks like you may have signs of it as well, canines are flattened at the top.

I will try and use these techniques as my gums are receding and I have noticed technique does make a difference.

Ive had the same issue and had a couple of skin grafts. They aren't too bad, but not ideal either. Since then I've found the best solution is to

1. be more careful/gentle when brushing (soft head toothbrush only)

2. floss after every time you eat if possible

3. increase the number of times you go to your dentist for a professional cleaning. Even if you pay out of pocket it is still less expensive than getting grafts and other dental issues you will have because of it.
