San Francisco

Hey guys,

I'll be moving to San Francisco in the coming months and I'm curious to any of your opinions/tips on the city.

Couldn't find any threads on this, so if I missed it please post a link for me.

---

As a note, I do have a brother who lives there and I have visited many times, but mostly hyper-tourist sight seeing garbage with the family. I have yet to really experience the city.

I love San Francisco, it is hands down my favorite city in the U.S., and probably one of my favorites in the world, the city just has a good energy to it, it's got a real unique feel that's hard to find any where else. I could probably do a long write up, but I will say some things that I like about the city, it is extremely liberal and you can get away with a lot of shit that you never could in 95% of the U.S. Here in CA, and especially in the S.F. bay area, weed is more or less legal and if you have a doctor's RX (which is incred. easy to obtain), you can legally stroll into a "dispensary" and buy some of the world's best cannabis product. Smoking weed on the streets is the norm and believe me, smelling the good herb and seeing people smoke it is everyday life out here, no one bats an eyelash.

On top of that people are just more laid back, chilled out, and open minded, ignorant fucks in other states like to talk shit about SF being so gay, well I'm not going to dispute it, but the thing is people are less judgmental out here which means you can live whatever lifestyle you want, whether that's flaming homo, punk rocker, hipster, hippie, hip hop head, etc.

I haven't spend much time in NYC or LA as of late, but in my opinion San Francisco has the best food in U.S. or at least has to rank in the top 3. The food is just so damn good out here and you can get just about anything you want, organic soul food, Burmese, German, Mexican, etc., lot's of food is grown produced in the surrounding areas (Marin, Sonoma, etc.), so there is an abundance of quality, fresh, organic food.

S.F. nightlife definitely won't stack compared to NYC, Miami, etc., but there is always shit popping in the city, live music every night, good bars/clubs, festivals and events, (some I can think of are Bay to Breakers, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, etc.) There is never a dull moment in S.F., just walking down the street is like live cinema, you're almost always guaraunteed to see some crazy shit.

The city is probably one of the most diverse places in the U.S., you will find people from all over the world, no shortage of hispanic, asian, indian, etc. women to choose from. Unlike other cities, people in S.F. get along well and you won't find the division you'll find in other cities/states.

Finally, there are so many neighborhoods, someone could just spend all day breaking that down, I will say that my favorite hood is the Mission District, here you will find a mix of an entrenched Hispanic (Mexican) community that has lived here for decades, mixed with pretentious hipsters, gang bangers, college kids, hip hop heads, hippie-ish potheads, musicians/artists and a cross between all of them.

Last thought, as much as I love SF, two things that suck are the weather, and the cost of living, it's fucking expensive outside of Manhattan it's probably the most expensive place in the whole U.S.

P.S. do a forum search for San Francisco, there are already other threads we've posted info. on.

Agreed on his comments.

As far as food, I would say top 3 or 4 in America. I would rank, NYC, Chicago and New Orleans higher or even with the last two, depending on tastes.

Way better restaurants than LA. No comparison. And not just fine dining, the budget food is insane there as well.

"S.F. nightlife definitely won't stack compared to NYC, Miami"

Agreed. But then again, NYC and Miami are the best in America followed by Vegas and New Orleans.

I give SF the nightlife edge over LA as well.

There is way more freedom up there than Southern California.

I love SF and would consider moving there.

If you have any more specific questions, shoot.

I will back up what the other responses. SF is one of my top two favorite cities in the USA. I lived there for two years before moving to Japan and it was great. I prefer NYC. NYC #1 and SF #2 for me. Both cities have great food. People are way more laid back in SF and it is very non-judgmental. I also enjoyed spending time over in the East Bay, Oakland and Berkley. It's warmer in the East Bay and you get a different vibe over there.

The only thing that is a drawback is the cost of living. I don't mind that it gets chilly in SF. The saying is that for every mile you drive away from SF it gets one degree warmer.

SF is a good East meet West city but it's obviously more Western.

I hope you do move there. You will enjoy it.

SF is a unique place. Its not for everybody. You just gotta try it out and see if you like it. Cost of living is very high. Weather is cold because its right on the ocean.

The food and culture are world class.

The women and nightlife are not.

There are other threads about this. Search again.

San Diego is a better option for alot of people.

NYC has an energy level that SF never will have. It is a 24 hour city, you can find stuff to do any day of the week at any time. You can't do that in SF, there are maybe two places in the city rocking on a Wed night for example.

NYC is also of course much bigger and more international. You have like 8 million ppl in a small area whereas SF is only 750k ppl and I imagine only swells to 2 million tops when ppl come in for work or partying.

I also think lots of ppl move to NYC to fuck around so you have a really active dating scene whereas people move to SF after finishing grad school or something. It's a more serious dating scene than NYC, a better place to find someone to marry but to have fun NYC is better.
