Simple question, searched the boards, could not find a definitive/straight answer. Thanks Fellas, just hit issues with a side and I'm trying To hit the gym going 100.
Do Squats Make you shorter?
Seriously?
Yes. Contrary to popular belief, dwarfism is not genetic, but caused by excessive barbell squats in infancy.
just do pull ups to balance it out
God'll prolly have me on some real strict shit

I don't even have a name for what kind of troll this guy is. I tried to come up with a name, but couldn't.
Elliot Hulse says yes, they do.
It could be worse... I talked to a Marine who said he was 6'1 when he joined, and that after trucking a heavy pack leading to some injuries that messed his back up, now he's 5'11.

If only you knew how bad things really are.
Having a compressed spine can make you shorter. It's not permanent though, but fluctuates. That's why you're a centimetre or more taller in the morning than in the evening. So while I don't know if squatting will compress your spine specifically, if it did, it's nothing that a bit of foam rolling and back bridges won't immediately reverse.

Wow. I'm not a troll. Everyone relax, I honestly just wanted informative answers to a question I was unsure of Thanks. I didn't notice any height difference before and after my year of service, which included more than enough ruck's, but honestly I just wanted to be sure, definitely don't want to lose height to squats.
Ok that's fine, but your post doesn't even make sense. What on earth does "just hit issues with a side and I'm trying To hit the gym going 100" mean. That's lorem ipsum shit.
It definitely compresses your spine, but I have never heard of anyone becoming shorter.
I wanted an LTR with a side fling, I got fucking cut, I'm trying to rebuild my body to an impeccable extent to fucking make her jelly. It's better than my usual route, drink. Lol. I'm new guys bear with me.
I've never heard of this happening but I see how it could be possible. If you're squatting heavy you are putting a shitload of compression on your spine. Whether that could have some permanent effect, I don't know. One thing that I've read though is that astronauts who have been in space awhile will be an inch taller due to zero gravity. They soon return to normal height back on earth. So squatting might make you shorter temporarily though I doubt it's enough for you to even notice in the mirror. Could there be some long term damage from wearing your vertebrae discs out? Could be possible.
Yeah immediately after a heavy squat set, you get shorter because of spinal compression.
Then your spine decompresses (you can help by hanging off a pullup bar) and you're back to normal height.
This short fellow right here is 6'7" and would've been 7'+ had he not been squatting so much.

I don't see the original post as trollish.
No, they don't make you shorter.

Thank you. So the general consensus concludes, Squats in fact do make you shorter but on a TEMPORARY Basis? And are they worth it? (In opinion)
I've noticed that squats make you temporarily shorter, probably due to spinal compression. I've also noticed that dead lifts make you temporarily a little bit taller probably due to back extension.
This is why midgets are becoming more popular on the forum.
I don't think OP is a troll. There is a myth that weightlifting stunts growth and he may have fallen victim for that.
Squatting doesn't make anyone shorter. For me it even has made me visually taller by correcting my stance.
If you compress some discs or whatever then it probably makes you shorter. Put good form above everything else.

Thing is, type "do squats make you shorter" into google and you get pages of results...all from actual fitness sources.
I find it weird, that's all.

All compounds lifts are amazing. From squats, deadlift, bench etc. Do them.
They don'timake you shorter either permanently or temporary. Like another poster said my posture is improved which makes me "look" taller even though i'm still 6ft tall. Do you have any other questions?

I used to be 6ft 1in. Now I average around 5ft 11 and a half to to 6ft and a 1/4 inches on a good day. I did heavy squats, rucking and static line parachute jumps in the military. All of these things can compress your spine. But it's not your spine compressing permanently, it's the muscles from your calves, up to your back tightening. If you stretch, and work on posture you'll be fine. If you're a guy that benches heavy and you don't work your back just as hard your shoulders will start to pull forward and down because of imbalances. Have someone take pic of you from the front, and side. Look at where your shoulders are in relation to your hips. Your shoulders should be inline with your hips. I make it a point to pull my shoulders back like I'm standing at the position of attention.
