Tattoo artist's response to scorned Jezebel writer is stuff of legends

An almost-40-year-old (single?) mother who writes for Jezebel walks into a tattoo parlor, asks for a neck tattoo and the artist refuses. Of course, she writes about it, putting him "ON BLAST." A tattoo publication asks him for his feedback. He calmly and respectfully eviscerates her mental hamster.

Quote:
"If I was to make the decision again today, I would still say no. I hope for her sake she does not get judged as harshly for her new neck tattoo as she judged myself and the staff of New York Adorned upon walking into our shop."

NO, YOU CAN’T GET A FUCKING NECK TATTOO, JANE MARIE.

There are many manosphere tropes in here, but mostly, I love how this incident shows something about how certain sub-culture traditions and belief systems counter popular culture's Cartman-like "You don't know me/I do what I want" belief system.

These feminazis always find a way to make everything about themselves.

Quote:Quote:

Chief among our traditions is that quality tattoo artists are the custodians of the craft. What they say goes. Also, how dare she admonish him for refusing the tattoo on any grounds? A tattoo is a collaborative effort between the artist and the wearer, if the artist doesn’t want to take on a piece then he or she needn’t feel pressured. Tattoos are in a sense fashion. Cut-rate tailors will alter any dress to please a client but couture designers have the right to refuse clients whose wishes don’t work with their aesthetic and don’t want their name on the outcome. There is a saying that a tattoo artist is only as good as the latest piece in their portfolio and so if Bythewood had accepted the tattoo, Marie’s piece would be in his record. She is acutely aware of this because in her piece she attacked his work, sarcastically calling it “perfectly un-tacky.”

Bingo.

From the artist:

Quote:Quote:

Where she really got it wrong is assuming that I refused her service for sexist reasons, even after I informed her that I refuse neck tattoos on men and women weekly.

The real loser in all this is whoever went ahead and tattooed her neck.

Translation: Couturiers don't clothe fat chicks. Ask almost any aspiring fashion designer, and they will resolutely refuse to offer plus sizes for their dream line.

Not totally related to the story, but heres a comment from the original jezebel story that made me say wow.

Quote:Quote:

I’ve also commented on Jez before that I have a memorial tattoo for my cat on my leg, with her ashes mixed in with the ink. It took me a long time to find an artist willing to do this, and I was totally ok with people rejecting me.

"I used to date el-p" thrown in there for no reason.

I couldn't even imagine getting to bitch to the Internet like it's one of your girlfriends. Her self righteousness is absurd.

How did she pick out only one cat from the dozens she must own/had?

EDIT: Read his response, its pretty good, but is still rife with the semi-defensive "Im not a misogynist! Ask all my female friends!!" whinges that play right into the femtard frame. They lead right off with the 'sexist' shot because it puts the target on the defensive and in their frame immediately. The target going into perfectly logical detail about why he won't do a neck job is perfectly logical....to a man.

Goldfinger, I saw the worst tattoo ever last week - it was on a girl in NYC who had a cat tattooed on both of her calves - except the tattoo was so big most of her calves was just wrapped in black, over 6" in height I believe. I was hoping it was a leg warmer or something, but it was not. Tried to snag a pic but she was on a bike.

This is not the stuff of legends.

Quote:Quote:

I was targeted by a blogger via Jezebel.com who would like to see me out of business.[/b] The reason? I refused to tattoo her neck, as I regularly do when asked by a sparsely tattooed or un-tattooed customer. Where she really got it wrong is assuming that I refused her service for sexist reasons, even after I informed her that I refuse neck tattoos on men and women weekly. Her misguided attempt to make this a feminist issue is a disservice to true feminism. It trivializes it in a wolf cry and makes slanderous assumptions of my character (just ask my mother, three big sisters, three beautiful nieces, and all of my wonderful female friends). I am a far cry from a misogynist. Although I appreciate all of the support I have received from the tattoo community, I would also like to ask that all the harsh name-calling directed at “SeeJaneMarie” stop now. We strongly disagree with her opinion, but I also strongly disagree with calling women “b***hes” or “c**ts” for having strong opinions, even if those opinions are misguided.

This cunt threatened his livelihood and he seems more concerned with defending his Nice Guy credentials than calling her out. What a pussy.

Basil... I will wager that you saw this in Bushwick, Williamsburg, or some other hipster neighborhood. I'm getting the hell out of Brooklyn, its getting unbearable.

Also i bet the dimensions of the tattoo match her cats in real life. Bitches

Why are you cutting another man down over nothing? To elevate your own status? You just sound petty.

No, I think he is playing it smart. No one wants an emotionally unstable tattoo artist. Many of his clients, particularly in NYC, are going to be liberal hipster types. He is showing them exactly who he is -- someone who makes rational decisions in his craft, not a person with a political agenda or with any qualms servicing or caring for women.

He obviously turns down paying clients if the work violates his belief system. He is not trying to maximize profit at all costs.

From the Jezebel article:

Quote:Quote:

And then suddenly I’m fighting back tears . . .

. . . I was so infuriated I cannot remember exactly what I said . . .

Sasha, to his credit, remained calm and let me handle it myself, although I’m sure if I’d just broken down sobbing he would’ve verbally skewered the dude. I did break down once we got outside.

Jesus christ, can you imagine going through life like this? A relatively minor conflict with another person is occasion for an emotional breakdown, followed a lengthy article to tell the world about how you were wronged?

He didn't refuse her service — he was ready to do the arm tattoos for her and her friend, but said he wouldn't do the tattoo on her neck.

Women like this think they're portraying themselves as victims of some terrible injustice. They only succeed at coming across as emotionally unhinged, petty, and with too much time on their hands.

Oh, and she's apparently a single mother. Imagine growing up under the auspices of this drama queen...

Maybe.

All I can say is if I'm ever in a position of putting out a public statement defending my job against an annoying harpy like this, the words "true feminism" nor statements alluding to females who can vouch for me will not be contained within.

Such a great read. Thanks for starting this thread. From her original article that started it all (Dan is the tattoo artist, "Me" is her):

Dan: “And then you want your daughter’s name... on your neck?” Shakes head left to right.
Me: “What.”
Dan: “Not gonna happen.”
Me: “Wait, what? Why?”
Dan: “It’ll look tacky. It’s just tacky.”
Me: “Wait, you’re telling me what will look tacky on me? Don’t I get to decide that?”

I've always found it ironic that modern feminists so perfectly encapsulate every negative stereotype about women that feminism is purportedly out to prove wrong by acting like hyper-sensitive, emotionally unstable drama queens who can't handle not getting their way.

You hit the nail on the head here. The extent of these public, childish tantrums, always amaze me... all because things didn't go her way.

The big mean man was picking on me! Wahh! Help the poor oppressed female victim!

How often do you see men doing this sort of thing because of how they were treated? They are laughed off the internet.

Outrage junkies.

He refused to tattoo you, go find another tattoo artist who will.

That's not just common sense advice, it's also exactly what happened. But this B needed something to get upset about today.

Fuckin bitches these days think the world is their playground. The guy runs a business. His art is his business. If he does a shitty job that will bring down his reputation and subsequent business. He's smart to cut her off in the beginning.

The artist's response:

Quote:Quote:

I take my craft seriously. I take the time-honored traditions of tattooing seriously. Traditions and respect that we are losing daily to a new petulant culture screaming “gimme now!” and treating tattooers with the same disrespect they wrongly just waged at the last Starbucks barista who made their latte. I won’t be part of it and I refuse to support it. In the end, just know this “SeeJaneMarie”: Tattooing is my tribe. We will allow you to be a tourist, we will even welcome you to join, but don’t be surprised that in 2015 there are still some things that cannot be bought, just earned.

Most tattoo artists are very smart socially. You are dealing with multiple clients everyday in a very intimate environment. On top of that you have all the crazies, idiots and time wasters who come into your studio everyday. They can deal with several hundred people in a week if not over a 1000. This guy isn't being a pussy, he is looking after the name of his studio and himself. The above statement is professional and effective.

The bigger picture here is most tattooers just hate this type of customer. They are never happy, don't know anything about tattoo culture and give the studio a terrible reputation. This is her reaction not getting a tattoo. They know well to stay clear of people like this and not to be associated in anyway. These people destroy the reputation of a good studio. She is 40, unstable and her prior tattoos are the letter 'C' and 'ownlife'.

A tattoo studio is like a nightclub and you have to 'face control' your tattoos. Every one is a walking advertisement for that studio in the future. These guys will get grilled by people they would probably never tattoo anyway and the people who count (and actually are customers) will respect them more for sticking to their guns. The professional statement just keeps it classy and they can sit back and enjoy the free press.

Friend of mine is a tattoo artist too. He also refused to do trash tattoos that the, well, less educated ones demand.

What makes some women so hyper sensitive and selfish?
