So if men DON'T serve, suddenly they're emasculated pussies ?

What kind of state of mind is that ? There are plenty of men who didn't serve or pick up a rifle that I'd call a mans man.

I'd rather see it as those who serve as the bad ass of all bad asses - not just men.

This has a better connotation than the first.

Just because you DIDN'T serve, doesn't mean you're less of a man.

Let's not forget feminism getting into the veins of the US military also.

It takes a special kind of nutsack to put yourself in harms way. Writing off military service or commitment to a cause is easy for most civilians, because it costs nothing. Hitting the gym to rediscover your sense of masculinity? Great, go ahead. There are 19 year olds out there ("men" in the truest sense of the word) taking Taliban shrapnel up the ass to do the exact same.

A few seconds at the two-way shooting range and the entire book on masculinity and manhood is rewritten before your eyes. Ali knows this world.

I have no doubt that Ali knows the world of war; that's not the issue. My post was to showcase my disagreement with him about who can judge a war or participating in one. My position is anyone can judge. Whether we take their judgment seriously or not is another issue.

About your statement which I highlighted; are you really saying that boys can not become real men unless they get bombarded and shot at by strangers? Surly you jest!!

How common are these abominations in the US military?

Pretty common, unfortunately. But because the National Guard units needed bodies to fill billets, they still deployed them. Most of the fat bodies, however, get kicked out when they return home. On a happier note, fat shaming is still alive and well in the military.

Every military has shitbags. The Romans had shitbags, the Germans had shitbags. ISIS has shitbags. But if I did have to post a caricature of the average grunt I knew and loved (the guys in the phalanx, the masses holding the line), he'd look more like this:

^^^^Every Marine I knew was motivated, in shape, and I knew a few were or still Juice/PCT.

I'll tell you one thing, one of the most loyal and loving friends you can have.

Not like the woman in the original topic, like another poster said....it's all "you go girl" until they come home in body bags or beheaded on TV.
