Career: Digital Marketing or UI/UX Design/Dev?

Hi guys,

Thought I would drop a post on here as a lot of you are in either field. I have the option to dive into either one of these careers this next week. Need to make a decision over the weekend which one I want to focus on. I have always been interested in digital marketing, paid search, etc. That said, a role popped up where I would learn UI development as well as UX design for a software company.

I am very basic when it comes to development and don't have the full confidence when it comes to it, but I do like to be creative.

For the guys who have been in either of these careers. What would you suggest and why? Which one has a higher cieling in terms of salary? Which one is more enjoyable? Which one will be low stress? Pro and cons?!

Help?!

Thanks!!!

Well UX/UI and dev are two quite different roles. It's not only about the money, it's about what you like better and what you would like to focus on.

In both roles you can be paid well, but you have to be good. And you're only gonna be good if you like what you do.

With dev, you can def make very good money, but not necessarily with front end. I think to really make good $$ as a dev you need to get into a higher-end field.

And of course, dev is very technical, whereas UX/UI is more conceptual / analytical / creative. It really depends where your strenghts lie.

EDIT: I just saw that your choice is between internet marketing and dev/UX/UI

What I can say is that UX/UI and dev is rarely the same role. For small projects yes, but normally UX/UI and dev are two separate roles. As you progress in your carreer, you will probably focus on one of the two.

And yeah, internet marketing is obviously a whole another role.

Thanks man! Seems like for this role it would be a mix of UX and Dev.

Career: Digital Marketing or UI/UX Design/Dev?

Bringing this up from the dead to see if any others here on RVF have been part of this world and have stories or advice to share?

I am thinking of learning some UX/UI skillets and would like to pick up Digital Marketing skills as well. From brainstorming I think it would be viable tool for my industry going forward as way to get information to people in a easy to understand manner.

I have been setting a target that I want to be either in a good Start-up situation or plant a seed of my own by this time next year. Using my last few semesters in school to rinse every fucking drop of the resources schools have for students to get them involved in the new technology.

That sounds awesome. How did you land a job like that? Are you originally from Bangkok?

Both are very good. Both are very different.

UX/UI are different roles but are often rolled together in small companies.

No idea about salaries (check glassdoor). Conceptually speaking, sales is where the money is. But UX could be angled as figuring out product-market fit which is also essential. You can really figure out the difference by listening to this podcast about a company started by a digital marketer and a UX/UI/dev: thread-54749...pid1266611

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.
