There is an optical illusion where you see the opposite colors if you stare at it too long. The dress is high contrast so it would make the illusion more. However this is clearly a white an gold dress which looks off due to the poor white balancing of the picture.

Do an overexposure correction on the dress in photoshop and you can see that it's blue and black.

This is the dress:

And below is the fat cow who made the Internet waste too much time discussing the dress. Anyone who sees white or gold in it deserves to bang her.

Well fuck me,

When I initially saw it I voted white/gold and thought you guys were taking the piss.

Now it looks blue/black.

Since voting I have been working on an assignment staring at a screen for a long time and also am heaps more tired. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Yep, got a black and blue when quickly scrolling and not thinking about it, but then it turned back afterwards, clearly some kind of brain glitch at play.

Hah, I am legitimately colorblind, being confused like this is pretty much my natural state.

photoshop fucked with its brightness. Evidence look at the light to your right. Shit gets like that when you bump up the brightness in windows photoshop.

Depending on where your eye focuses the dress can change colors due to it being over or under exposed

edit: too lazy to make post about pupil dilation and the effect it has. PM if you're that interested and I'll get back to you tomorrow

I finally get it and have observed this for myself. Thanks man.

I personally think this was a good fun moment for society. It's a fun silly argument to have that gets an emotional reaction out of you, but isn't actually serious at all. It's like being able to have an argument about religion, politics, feminism, or sports with no possible hard feelings.

My sentiments exactly. Not every discussion has to be about the DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION for it to "elevate" society.

This photo is white and gold.

Another photo my girlfriend showed me last night and I saw blue and black.

Also,

I really want "white/gold blue/black issue" to be a new expression. It means it's a seemingly simple situation people look at from the same perspective but still perceive something wildly different.

I know we are taking the piss here, but I just heard about this nonsense in the airport lounge I'm in now.

What is wrong with the world when this shit makes the CBC hourly news?

It's not harming anyone, so that's fine.

I don't know why there's even an argument on this dress. It's long been known that human color perception is highly dependent on the context surrounding the color. In this case, the overexposure of the blue/black dress makes it appear to be white/gold. Some people's brains are better at correcting for the overexposure than others'.

As another example, the "blue" and "green" portions of this spiral are the same color, but you perceive it differently based on the surrounding color.

And here, A and B are also the exact same color, which you perceive differently because your brain thinks there is a light source casting a shadow on B:

The first one yes, if you flip the screen somewhat you can see it's green with violet. True.

The second, nope, has nothign to do with the light source, if I take my hand over it, still the same, but if I look from a different angle, then the B box is actually black.

I know this is harmless, but fuck is it ever annoying to see girls on my fb and twitter feed spouting buzzfeed slogans like "This made me re-evaluate my life." It's a fucking dress, it's an optical illusion.

Also, the debate over what colour it is is stupid as well. Colour is a perception, it's an interesting theory that the colour blue might be different in the eyes of two different people.

Only thing dumber is the people trying to analyze it as "If you see blue, it's because you had a traumatic incident as a child."

Seriously, I've seen it in more than one place.

Saw white and gold at first, now see black and blue.

The colors are just ambiguous enough to let your brain improvise a bit.
