Trebek threatens to leave Jeopardy over complaint from Loser Girl's Mom

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news...y-20141612

I'll quote the relevant info to avoid giving that rag extra clicks. Calling Trebek's response a rant and a hissy fit etc.

Quote:Quote:

A series of emails uncovered by Radar Online show Trebek, 74, voicing unhappiness with an incident on the show, which aired earlier this month.

During day three of Kids Week, which took place Dec. 1 - 5, one contestant ended her run in the red, forcing her out of competing in Final Jeopardy with the other two kid competitors.

In the video that aired on Wednesday, Dec. 3, Trebek tells the contestant, who ended up $1,400 in debt, "We have bad news for you, because you're in the negative situation, it means you won't be around for Final Jeopardy, but you'll automatically pick up $1000 for a third place finish."

Though he followed the standard show protocol of a contestant in the negatives not competing as they have nothing to wager, Trebek reportedly did not make enough of an effort to make the failed competitor feel better. According to the emails published by Radar, Trebek was asked to re-tape the last moment after the third place finisher "was visibly upset" and ran backstage.

"Alex's intentions were good," a producer wrote, but they would need to film the segment again "to appease an upset mother who could start another feeding frenzy about Alex's perceived insensitivity."

The mother of the girl wrote a letter to Sony producers, explaining that she was "quite a bit taken back" by how Trebek handled the situation.
"If he had taken the time, he would have known, like you do, that my daughter is not a sore loser, and does not become emotional solely over losing a game," she wrote. "She was upset about not being able to completely play the game to the end… I don't think I'll ever forgive him for that."

Trebek denied their request to retape the ending and wrote that he didn't feel appreciated by the network.

I'm a Jeopardy fan and a Trebek fan. I feel the show increases my knowledge and keeps me sharp, and is entertaining.

I watched this episode; the broad was terrible. She got more questions wrong than right and was outplayed by the other two kids. What does she expect? If she wanted to play til the end she should have stepped it up. Despite her incompetence she still won $1000, and complained anyway.

Just another example of how feminism is ingraining a sense of entitlement into these little girls. Sooner or later the snowflakes melt down in the yellow sun of the Real World the rest of us live in. Losing isn't supposed to feel good, woman. The mother, to top it all off, has the gall to complain to the producers to retape the ending.

This should have been a learning, character building experience but instead it gets twisted around on Trebek and he gets painted as the bad guy. Pisses me off to no end.

Tl;DR: Girl sucks at Jeopardy and has no money to participate in Final Jeopardy. Still gets $1000. Runs away crying to mommy to fix her shitty performance. Trebek is the bad guy.

The episode in question. Loser gets ousted at 17:20.

NOt sure how old the girl is, but the issue I have is with the mother demanding they change the rules for her daughter. A product of our "Everyone is a winner" society with participation awards and no scorekeeping soccer.

Young girls being emotional is normal. Nothing unusual there in the least.

I always thought that if you finished with negative numbers Alex would muscle you out of the money you owed him backstage!

Perhaps the entitled bitch mother could use the $1000 to get her kid some tuition.

Exactly. As discussed in my "Millenials" thread.

Interesting to know that you can owe them money for a poor performance.

Funny YouTube comment, not made by me:

"Don't be so quick to write Alex off as innocent. There was an unedited version on YouTube in which Alex told Gabby: "Don't quit your day job, kiddo." When Gabby replied, "I don't have a job." Alex told her, "Yeah, get used to that."

As she began to cry, Alex quickly handed her a cup of warm cocoa, which made Gabby smile. But her smile quickly disappeared when Alex said, "Cocoa in which I haven't spit in is for winners. Hey, at least you still have your $1,000.00, you big dummy!" Then he quickly had her escorted off the stage. Alex can be cruel sometimes."

I record every episode of Jeopardy and then the wife and I binge on the weekends. Yes, wild times. But I can assure you that the language Alex used to explain the situation to this girl is identical to what he has told every contestant who has ended up in the red in every such episode I've seen. Verbatim, to the point it's almost like it's just a "muscle-memory" thing for Alex. I'm really surprised the girl's hysterical mother was indulged even for a second by any rational person. Sounds like the producer who failed to bitch-slap her needs to be canned.

yeah very true, especially because, just like "fat is beautiful", women are only as young or old as they feel!!

That poor kid is gonna end up in therapy the first time she faces something mommy can't fix for her. Like the first time she has to wait at a red light during rush hour.

I don't think you can blame this on feminism. it's more a case of millennials and their helicopter parents sheltering them from failing at all costs. when you read stories about parents going to job interviews, something like this seems almost benign.

Trebek can be as asshole at times when he puts down the losers. Having the answers in your hands and playing God for years can really get to your head.
Still, though, I would have liked for Sony to at least back him up on this one.

Thank god she got $1000 to spend on cupcakes and ice cream to make herself feel better for being so stupid.

Funny thread but I don't see how this should be news.

Trebek threatens to leave Jeopardy over complaint from Loser Girl's Mom

Reading the comments on other sites, people think the mom got upset over comments Trebek made in the next episode, taped only a few minutes after the girl in question lost. Usually the players who don't make final Jeopardy come out at the end to stand there for the closing credits, but this girl was having a hissy fit backstage and didn't come out. That prompted Trebek to allude to it in the intro of the subsequent episode, go to 1:00 in the vid.

He didn't really need to bring any attention to it, especially since from the perspective of the viewer, nobody would understand what he was talking about, as what the girl did in failing to appear for the final credits isn't something that most people would notice or care about, let alone remember the next day when they were watching the new episode.

But it's hardly an issue for the mom to make a stink about either.

^ Perhaps, but if so, why did the producers ask him to retape the original episode's ending and not the next episode's opener?

I remember seeing that live - how could you forget the name Zane Ice? - and had no idea he was referring to a particular contestant.

^^ About Alex's statements at the start of the next day's show, I think his intentions were good. It wasn't an apology of course, nor should it have been because he had done no wrong, but more like an acknowledgement that he realized she took it hard, he seemed to feel bad about that fact, and that he wishes her well in the future. Also, the guy's 74 years old, born in 1940 for goodness sake. I think he deserves some slack when dealing with eggshell-skull millenials. Most men in their 70s are not nearly so pleasant.

I saw the episode she he explained it to her like an adult. She received adult type money so, an adult explanation is needed. Not ohhhh precious little dear, hopefully next time sweetie....c'mon please.

As for Trebek being upset or pissed is that his producers didnt have his back. They let one idiot make a silly complaint. Our societies are being brought down by idiots like this.
