Columbia delays finals for some after 'trauma' of Garner, Brown grand jury decisions

The Garner story has a thread already, but I thought this should have its own thread, as it's more about the trigger-warning/hyper-sensitive/pc mentality that is somehow becoming, or is already, completely accepted at some American educational institutions.

From Yahoo! News:

Quote:Quote:

Columbia Law School will let students postpone their final exams if they say they feel traumatized by the polarizing grand jury decisions not to indict police officers in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

Robert E. Scott, the school’s interim dean, announced the decision via email Saturday, citing policies to help students who feel their performance could suffer after distressing experiences.

“The grand juries’ determinations to return nonindictments in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases have shaken the faith of some in the integrity of the grand jury system and in the law more generally,” the email reads.

“For some law students, particularly, though not only, students of color, this chain of events is all the more profound as it threatens to undermine a sense that the law is a fundamental pillar of society designed to protect fairness, due process and equality.”

Several faculty members and a trauma specialist scheduled special office hours this week for students who would like support or to discuss the implications of the grand juries' decisions.

The conservative Power Line blog, which first picked up the story, apparently found Columbia's email ridiculous enough to alert readers that the news was not satire.

“The video of Garner is certainly disturbing,” the post reads. “But anyone so unstable as to be incapable of preparing for and taking exams due to grand jury proceedings not involving themselves or their families should be given an indefinite leave of absence in which to get better.”

Similarly, a prominent New York-based defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, told the New York Times that Columbia's decision was “absurd.”

“If law students cannot function with difficult issues like these, maybe they should not try and become lawyers,” he said.

A spokesperson for Columbia Law School confirmed to Yahoo News that a small fraction of its students rescheduled their exams for later this month but feared that this matter could divert attention from the real issue: “how to ensure a criminal justice system that protects fairness, due process, and equality.”

Michael Orey, a spokesperson for NYU School of Law, declined to comment on Columbia’s decision but said the school's students can also request to reschedule exams after traumatic experiences.

“We haven’t made any announcement that’s similar to Columbia’s,” he told Yahoo News. “It’s always been the case that students can request a postponement on a case-by-case basis, and that’s always been true.”

TLDR Summary: Columbia Law School is allowing students who have suffered "trauma" (from learning of the decision not to indict in the Garner case) to postpone their final exams.

Just consider this a list of people you never want to hire as your attorney. Not that you'll get the chance I imagine. Law firms don't have fainting couches, these kids won't last long in private practice

I don't see this quite the same way as you guys.

These are some of the most elite law students in the law and if we know one thing, lawyers are not the epitome of ethical people.

This is what I think happened: a few of the cunning top students didn't feel like taking exams. The brainstormed a way to get out of exams and came up with the brilliant idea of newsjacking a major civil unrest topic with legal associations. They pleaded a good sob story to the faculty, and how could the administration resist this?

That's the sort of shit I did in college at least, and honestly, I wouldn't expect anything less from Columbia law students. I mean most of these guys are going to work for investment banks, oil companies and, worst of all, the us government

This kind of thing should only fly for people who had some sort of personal connection to either of these instances. If either of the cops or the departed is a family member or something, then by all means cut them some slack. I'm tired of people using other peoples' personal tragedies/fucked up situations to get attention and sympathy.

Columbia is a brand that people fall for, like any other "top" school. The smart people use the brand to get to know the right people. That's the real benefit of these places.

That being said, I'm not surprised this would happen at Columbia. It's quite an anomaly in the city.

People at my university are thinking of not attending class in a form of protest. All of the Black RSO's and AA studies departments are getting together to not go to school. Not sure what type of benefit this would entail.

Trauma? TRAUMA?!

Let me get this straight: The civil war in Syria, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the ISIS brutality in Iraq, the death camps in North Korea, and the thousands of black men murdered annually by fellow black men in America aren't sufficiently "traumatizing," but THIS is?

The lesson here is that an event is traumatizing not based upon the magnitude of its awfulness, but by how closely it can be tied to some SJW cause.

I'm still traumatized from the original OJ verdict...

There I was in middle school sitting in the cafeteria and they put it on the loud speaker for the entire school to hear: "Not Guilty"

The entire cafeteria erupted in applause and cheers with people on their feet, screaming and hugging, as if Bruce Willis just sacrificed himself to separate a meteor into two and save the fate of mankind. It was me and one other student who looked at each other in shock and disbelief as we sat there in silence with our arms folded across our chests while everyone celebrated.

I just don't understand Americans.

I was in middle school as well, and the thing I remember most, was that the LA riots were still fresh in my mind.

If I told the judge in one of my cases I was traumatized by the Ferguson/Garner incidents and asked for an extension on filing a brief, would anyone like to guess at the almost certain response?

Oberlin College students begging for a "mercy reprieve" on their grades because hundreds of students participated in demonstrations in Oberlin and Cleveland. . .

However, the students show their true colors here:

Quote:Quote:

Students in this moment should have complete access to alternative modes of learning while we process what's happening. Basically, no student, especially black students and students of color, should be failing a class this semester. A 'C' should be the lowest grade students can receive this semester.

This is an issue of identity. Combine grade inflation with participation ribbons and supremely unhealthy praising of primary and secondary-school students, you get a class of college students who -- at least -- can't handle anything but the faintest of praise for their academic exertions.

This gets presented in real life as left-wing students who use mainstream news events to justify grade inflation to prop up their egos. I mean, come on, unlike those retards who watch Fox News, a smart person watches MSNBC! I mean, they should at least get a C in life. . .

Just one of the myriad of reasons why "I went to school in USA!" is slowly becoming not only the mark of a pompous elitist fool, but also of someone with a below-standard education.

The power of "No".

If more people knew it, the world would be a better class.

Hats off to Professor "No" Raney.
