Couldnt find a lot on turtle neck, but apparently its the trend this winter.

I personally like them. My main girl is Korean and she bought me a few turtle neck and shawl neck.

I think the stereotype that they look gay is just because the guys who wear them are typical scrawny crane neck hipster that would look gay even with a fitted suit. For guys who are fit with low facial body fat I think turtle neck work pretty well to highlight your face. Its also pretty damn warm. A few example I like:





Now there re a few different way to wear them and I find that wearing them UNDER a dress shirt is pretty irregular, but would be worth a try

The top pic is decent but Cruise looks like momma dressed him up.

I think it works best with a casual jaquet. Never with a full suit though.

Dunno...I feel like it's purpose/effect is to hide the neck. Right?

So if you have a pencil neck, a turtleneck sounds like a great idea.

But what if you lift weights a lot, and have a muscular neck with strong traps too? You're just hiding more of your masculine features with cloth. I don't see the point.

I think the reason the Cruise pic doesn't look so good is that when you layer, the thickness/bulk/texture is supposed to be sequential. I.e. the inner layer should be thin, the middle layer a little more substantial, and the outer layer the heaviest (or vice versa). Cruise is wearing a thick-thin-thick combination, which looks off. So, if you wear a turtleneck under a button-up, the turtleneck needs to be a really thin material or else the button-up needs to be really thick, like a heavy flannel. A mock neck would probably work in that case, because the mock neck usually looks thin, but you risk getting made fun of because mock necks are supposedly geeky.

I think wearing a well-fitted turtleneck under a regular collared or shawl collared coat, like the guy in the top picture, looks good. It's a very refined, put-together look.

One time I was in the grocery store in the US wearing a blue mock neck (Land's End, I think) under a brown, wool, mock neck, half-zip sweater (LLBean) and a cute, young Asian girl gave me the once over with an inviting smile. I wasn't game aware at the time so I didn't realize it until several minutes later and she was gone.

Can anyone explain why it's called a "turtle" neck? Turtles' necks are usually quite bare:

Turtlenecks are not really my style but they can look really great on some people with the right clothes combination.

I like them. One good reason is that they tend to fit the upper body snugly, and you can show off your physique, if you have one. I'm vain like that.
