Are fluorescent lights unhealthy?

I have had an ongoing issue with fluorescent lights (FLs) starting when CFLs started becoming more common place. I find that when I am anywhere with abundant fluorescent lights, I go into zombie mode and my brain just dies a little. Then there are times when I get pretty bad headaches from being around fluorescent lighting.

Now, this could be caused by other things, and FLs could just be circumstantially cast to blame, but having switched over all of the lighting in my apartment from FLs to incandescent/halogen/etc. the strange zombie feelings have gone away.

Do any of you also feel this way around FLs?

Here is an interesting article on it: http://brainblogger.com/2012/12/19/do-fl...not-alone/

I hate fluorescent light, especially the dead light you get in offices and other institutional settings from the long tube bulbs. How can light actually be grey? Don't know much about health effects but I do believe there are studies showing people are dumber and perform worse under fluorescent light.

They flicker at 60Hz or 60 cycles per second. Your lcd monitor or tv refreshes at 59.95 cycles per second. I believe the close clashing frequencies will get to you and give you headaches. Just get up and walk around and get some natural light once in a while if you work at a desk.

Yes, compare office workers vs. thuggish guys who stay outside all day. Everything from the way they act, to the way they look.

A dude on acne.org discovered he could slip up on his diet, as long as he stayed outside several hours, which has been my experience too.

Besides flourescent lights, any type of artificial light is going to be 100 times weaker than sunlight. Homeless guys are actually pretty healthy, as long as they don't get too much alcohol/drugs.

Yes, absolutely. Ideally you want full spectrum light. Sunlight is the best, obviously, but a light that emits more of the light spectrum than another is the better of the two. The low energy bulbs, which are either the only legal bulbs allowed or the only ones commercially available in many countries, achieve their energy efficiency in part by emitting a much narrower range. Energy efficient bulbs, like LED, are terrific for applications where you really need a lightweight and powerful option, say headlamps for hiking/camping or underground mining. But in my opinion they are not suitable for everyday household and office use. You are going to find increased eyesight, and other, problems cropping up in Europe and many other area's where people have been forced to change to energy efficient bulbs.

Fluorescent light is also supremely unflattering. It makes everyone's eyes look bloodshot and makes their skin look shitty. There's a reason butchers use fluorescent lights in their meat cases. It brings out the reds. While it makes meat look fresh, it makes people look like shit.

And, as you guys have pointed out, it also fucks with the mood of the room that you're in.

When I moved into my last apartment, all the fixtures were designed to take only CFL lights (pin setup instead of screw-in). I rewired the whole place to take nice, old-school incandescents.

I'm sure I prevented a few lighting cockblocks.

From my experience, it fucks my eyes up.
I can stay home at the Computer all day without any problem, while at the office I have massive headaches and eye soreness after 4 hours.

I talked about this last friday with a friend of mine who used to be Safety and Health inspector, and he said there are studies that prove if the lamp is below a certain distance from your head (about 40-50cm) it may cause baldness. Funny or not, my hair has been steadily decreasing since I started to work at the office.
EDIT: This may be due to the fat that they also emit small amounts UVA and UVB radiation.

If using a computer for extended periods of time, use f.lux.

It's a program that changes the color in the monitor according to the time of day so your eyes won't get tired.

White light during the day, warm light during the night.
