A few tips for curbing sugar cravings

Had a snickers bar yesterday (it being Halloween and all). First piece of candy I've had since I started an almost processed sugar free diet in July. It tasted like dog shit to me. At least for me it only took a few weeks for the cravings to go away and now I don't even like the stuff. Keep your fiber up and eat lots of fruit.

You're one of the lucky ones then. The first taste of chocolate I had after months on a no-sweets (bananas being the worst I allowed) low-carb diet, was pure bliss.
And also the point where I started sliding back into old, bad eating habits again.

I can ween myself off sugar so I don't have daily cravings anymore. But it's not likely to ever stop a bite of chocolate from tasting utterly delicious.

But then I'm also semi-addicted to cheese, so maybe the food/taste reward centers in my brain work in mysterious ways.

Advice from my TKD instructor:

- Buy a jar of organic/local honey. Whenever you are hungry or doing inter. fasting, just scoop a tablespoon and down it. It will be nasty the first few times. The overdose of sugar will kill your appetite for about four hours. This works well even for you guys on paleo diets, our caveman brains don't recognize organic honey as the same compound as white granulated sugar. As a bonus, using LOCAL honey (buy it at Farmer's Market) will also cure springtime pollen allergies.

- For those of you who like ice cream, try mixing figs (if you're cool with the seeds) or sweet potatoes with milk & condensed milk to make ice cream.

The whole point of intermittent fasting is to stay in ketosis and slowly transition your body from a predominantly sugar-burning metabolism to a fat burning modus.

The insulin spikes caused by eating sugar, or milk, or other insulogenic substances effectively break the fast.

Butter or coconut oil would be more appropriate in this situation as they won't take your body out of ketosis but will still provide energy and some feeling of satiety.

A few tips for curbing sugar cravings

I really enjoyed sweets during my mid-teens. I lost my sweet tooth soon after. I do still enjoy biscuits, crisps and liquorice and the occasional chocolate bar. What I discovered is the more water I consume from day to day, the less I crave anything sweet. When I'm not drinking enough water I crave fizzy drinks and alcohol.
