Goodreads.com is the popular social-book-rating-site. Its very active and has good info about books.
And like Yelp it also seems to be filled with ladies. Especially ladies into chicklit, romance, vamps, and zombie romance, etc.
Here is a random profile with like 4000+ friends of whom 80-90% are women....some are authors but mostly readers.

Like yelp, there are a lot of events both online as well as in the real world, like book giveaways. So you can follow and make friends with people on goodreads. Follow is like twitter no requests. Friend requests need to be approved.
Plus once you start following someone it starts listing common books too. I was a bit freaked by some guy also having six of my favorite books.
I think there is a play here......
