HUD calling for applicants as agency begins hiring spree

Uncle Sam wants you, but in a housing role instead of a military uniform.

After years of slowed hiring and budget freezes, the Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to add 1,000 positions across the country. HUD has about 8,000 federal employees right now.

“It’s a very exciting time, “said Jerry Brown, HUD spokesperson. “HUD hasn’t had a hiring surge like this in anytime I can remember.”

HUD has already filled about 480 of those positions, but the agency plans to hire about 600 more employees. Money for the new employees comes from the agency’s 2014 budget and savings from positions that went unfilled for an extended period, according to HUD.

The administration’s 2014 budget proposal included a request for the uptick at HUD, which has not hired since sequestration began in March 2013, according to Brown. “There is some real backlog,” he said.

President Obama has said he wants the federal government to serve as a model for employing veterans and people with disabilities, so HUD is reaching out to both groups, along with Peace Corps graduates and participants in the Presidential Management Fellows program, to find applicants.

“We want lawyers, engineers, and financial analysts,” Brown said. “But what it’s really about is being a part of putting a roof over someone’s head.”

USA.Jobs is the best place to look at what’s open, he said.

Have to turn those imaginary dollars from Yellen's basement into real wealth somehow. Houses are a good place to start.

1,000 jobs?

So billions in QE only gets you 1000 jobs with half already being claimed by insiders and family? Good luck being one of 50,000 + that apply.

If HUD had 8,000 people, and most of these new positions are open slots that wer'nt filled during sequestration, then did HUD have a 12.5 percent attrition rate over a year and a half? That works out to about 8 percent a year, which isn't too far off the private sector numbers I've read in the past for what amounts to a professional office employer.

It would have been better if the article had specified how many new slots were based on the post-sequester budgets, and how many were previously existing slots.

One of the article's comments suggests that the entire amount of hiring is for previously existing slots.

A lot of my friends who are feds hate their jobs for various reasons, but HUD seems to be getting good reviews on glassdoor.

The Senate spends, at minimum, about $8 million per senator per year. Think about that...$8 frigging million, at minimum!

Why would anyone be surprised that HUD is trying to keep up?
