I don't speak Thai nor do I live there. You obviously just got to find the right girls, not all are against being with foreigners, a lot of them don't like Thai men because they are aggressive, drunks & cheat (their words not mine).

Well, I'd rephrase it - a lot of them have zero chance of landing any decent Thai men because a Thai girl who is going out with foreigners is assumed to be a whore. It is not as much stigma as it is in the West, but it is safe to assume that the only Thai men who'd hang out with her would be of very low status. "Thai men no good" is a trademark of a typical whore.

Every case I know - and I know several of them - when a real middle-class Thai girl married a foreigner who didn't speak Thai happened when the girl was a student in a foreign university. And this is typically one of the first things they mention.

Boys, just a quick question .....

My brother/Buddy/I are heading down to SEA on March 31st... We are landing in Bangkok, and only want to stay a few nights. Would be good to be close to the airport/CLOSE to some good nighlife?? Just a suburb suggestion?

For now i might play it safe and stay in Sukhumvit

Quite a while ago (4 years?) i remember all Kao san road places shutting at 1am, and another nightclub shtutting at 3am?

Is this still the case?? Looking forward to some big nights [Image: smile.gif]

the places that don't bribe the cops still close early, around 01.00. At least that was the case when I was there in 2010. Spicy, Boss, Narcissus, Climax - that's the sleazy places that are heavy on freelancers and western men - all stay open until 5 in the morning, if remember correctly. If I were you I'd just stay in Sukhumvith- that's close to nightlife, and not too far away from the airport.

The girls I was with were certainly no whores but they still didn't like Thai men. I'm talking about well educated girls with money, good jobs, cars and apartments. A surgeon, estate agent for luxury properties (should have seen this girls apartment...wow!), tv presenter. All middle class girls who liked foreigners more than their own men and didn't have a problem in being seen with one.

I was there about a year ago and normal clubs were closing around 2 or 2:30am with some being allowed to stay open later. Then you've got the after hour clubs that you mention, I often went to Spicy for laughs then when that closed at 5 or 6am another club across the road (hidden in the back of a restaurant) opened up until mid day. Was pretty mad in there, all the whores and ladyboys who hadn't gotten any business would go their and party and enjoy themselves. You could easily take a girl home for free at that point and it was great fun too because these people know how to party.

Indeed a mad place! One has to pass through a 24h restaurant and take the elevator to the 1st floor. Debauchery at it's most extreme. I went there a couple of times myself, and landed what seemed to be a girl who was new in the biz. Very sweet, and no payment needed whatsoever [Image: smile.gif]

Really? Is this most places?

Do the after hours places serve booze?

And are they plentiful, or just like one or two spots?

This is not to take away from this excellent data sheet one bit, or to dissuade anyone from having a great time in LOS.

This link is just to offer a perspective to anyone who might fall in love with LOS enough to want to make a longer term commitment there:

Don't Move to Thailand

In short, the point is to keep your money separate from Thailand. If you plan on making your money in Thailand, then be careful about that choice. Although I realize that the thread has a decidedly different theme, I thought that this article was good enough to share regardless.

That's the one! And yeah you defo see plenty of girls who seem to be new to the whole thing and haven't quite mastered making it obvious their a whore, if you play dumb and act like she's a normal girl then you can easily have it for free.

Most clubs close at 2am as far as I remember then you have to go to an after hours place to continue the party, there's not loads as far as I know, the ones mentioned above are probably about it but that's plenty. I went to a couple that really weren't busy, Spicy being the one that seems to be consistantly so regardless of day of the week. And yeah they serve booze, just like any normal club but are 'illegal' i.e. they pay bribes to the cops. No one goes to these spots till the other clubs close do don't go too early. And it's worth knowing that if you take a taxi or tuk tuk to any of the after hours places you should get the taxi for free as the driver gets commission from the club for everyone he takes, just be sure to make it clear before hand you know it's a free fare.

Well, obviously I haven't seen the girls you mentioned. However a Thai girl who claims she does not like "Thai men" in general is something which immediately raises a red flag. Especially if she uses common whore-style excuses like "Thai men no good". And there is a lot of semi-pros in Thailand who definitely does not look or behave like the way Westerns expect a whore would.

Let's say it this way: I have never seen or heard of any real middle class non-pro Thai girl who would prefer foreigners to their own men. It actually even feels weird. Why would she prefer someone who doesn't know her culture, doesn't speak her language? I just don't get it.

And middle class real estate agent? LOL.

Western foreigners in general have a good reputation among low class Thai girls but the reputation isn't as colorful among the higher class girls. I've lived in Thailand for about a year and i'm completely sure about what i'm saying. Some good middle class Thai girls I met are so dissapointed by young western guys going to Thailand and leaving them behind when they leave back to their country, some are cute easy preys and some seem to be rejected by the Thai men. I've had a short relationship with a Thai girl from a wealthy family and in my opinion she was more a whore than any low class girl i've met.

If I would have to compare Thai girls with Chinese, Korean and Filipinas I would say the Thai girls are definately more fun to be with and the majority are better looking than their Filipina couzins although i've seen alot of smoking hot Korean girls but I don't like their attitudes. Theres just something about Thai girls, the way they look, speak... (except the bar girls)

I'm looking for a new destination to go in the world, i've been looking at South America and Africa but I think i'll just keep it simple and go back to SEA. I've noticed Asian girls really are my favourite

Once again, you're spot on Hydro. Thailand is not a place to make money unless you're sent there as an expat by a foreign company and being paid in a hard currency. As the article says, to really enjoy LOS is to live there without having to worry about $ and having to physically work at a Thai company. Then you'd be at the mercy of merciless bosses/corporations while working like a slave for 10-15 hours a day for peanuts. The most you'd make as an english teacher is a mere 30KB or 1K in dollars. Mind you, that's still more than what 90% of thais earn in a month, but the whole point of going there is to live it up and take full advantage of currency geo-arbitrage. And if you are thinking of starting a business in Thailand, it's not the wisest thing to do.

The absolute best way to really live it up there is to either have a shit load of $ and not worry about $ or have an online biz where you make a decent income each month (at the very least $2K-$3k) and therefore be able to live it up on that little biz/income. Then, you'd have a blast. I just did that this past fall/winter where I spent about 3 months in BKK, really living it up, partying my ass off and having an all around ball for about 4K/month. That included staying all the time at nice hotels. I could have easily shaven off at least 1k to 1.5k out of that had I been less lazy and looked for an apart and gone out less. But to hell with that as I wanted to focus on only one thing: having a ball and not be a bean counter or a cheap charlie. And since things are relatively cheap there, i didn't want a few bucks to get between me and having fun, so I did everything I wanted without worrying about $ and that still came to about 4k/month. I was able to do that thanks to my little online biz with minimal input/work which consisted of 1 hour a day, which was basically to reply to the questions that my prospects and those who had answered to my ad had sent me by email. That's all the work I did. If you have something like that, then BKK will be an insanely good place and that's why I spent there 90% of my time in Thailand. That place is THAT freaking good!

They could speak proper English so there's was none of this "Thai men no good" nonsense. [Image: wink.gif]

I prefer for example Brazilian and Thai girls over girls from my own country so I don't find it that hard to believe there's girls in Thailand who might like Farangs over the local men.

And what's so funny about the estate agent thing?

Btw, did you have any problems bringing a thai girl back to your hotel room? Some years ago when I was staying in cheap backpacker hotels, they had signs on the walls prohibiting that.

Nope, never ever had any problems in LOS bringing a girl to my room. Mind you, I never stayed in a hostel, always in good hotels.
God I miss Thailand so much and can't wait to return, this time for a lot longer than 3 months!

Man, I am really close to booking a flight to LOS in the next couple of days and escaping for a while.

Who is in Thailand at the moment? Any news about the flooding?

I was hoping to get that exciting job and moving to Asia for a year next month. But it didn’t work out in the end. Now I just can’t bring myself to accepting a job here. It all seems boring to me. I am only getting paid until the end of the month and have to pay the rent. Time to figure something out soon.

This is something you must check (ask the front desk) before bringing the girl. Ask if they allow guests in the room. If yes, ask if there is any guest fee, and how much. If no, ask if there is any guest fee if you bring more than one girl.

Some very cheap hotels do not allow it at all. So do some very expensive hotels (Marriott, in Pattaya, for example is well-known of NOT letting guests in). Most mid-range hotels allow it, but some charge the "guest fee", which in some cases may be significant enough (I've heard of 600B fees). Some hotels do not charge if you bring one girl, but charge a fee if you bring more than one. It is always better to ask in advance.

Regarding whether you'd have trouble bringing a girl to your room, here's what you could do and what I did when I was there:
Since I book about 90% of my accommodations through agoda.com, read the comment/feedback section of each hotel as people who have stayed at those hotels, will mention whether a place is "girl friendly" or not and whether they charge extra for bringing girls to your room. I personally never had that problem in my almost 4 months in Asia as I selected carefully the hotels I stayed at based on the recommendations/comments of those who stayed there before me.

I'm heading Bangkok for the first time next April 23rd and have some questions.

1) Is it safe to walk around in BKK with a $1000 Canon reflex camera?
2) What kind of products should I take from home vs buying there? Sunscreen, insect repellent, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste ... (can I easily find, for example, Pantene, Rexona, or Colgate products there at fair prices?)
3) From the perspective of a regular non-sexual / semi-sexual ( [Image: smile.gif] ) tourist are those 3 hotel recommendations still valuable? We are hoping to spend most time outside NEP / Soi Cowboy and go there just a couple times I think. We don't expect to stay much time in the hotel, but a pool and free wifi would be appreciated.
4) For 3 backpackers possibly booking 2 or 3 rooms (?) for 4 or 5 nights, what should be the best price per room at the recommended hotel in late April?
5) Can we expect to buy BTS cards at the local BTS stations and easily find a couple of cheap SIM cards to stay in touch with each other in case one gets "lost"?
6) I've read a lot of recommended touristic spots. Can you filter them and recommend the nicest ones, since we're supposed to stay there just for 5 days?

I don´t want to pollute this nice thread with off-topic, but if one have traveled to Macau, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Phuket/Phi Phi, I would much appreciate answers about these places too.

1) Yes it is. You see a lot of tourists walking around, expensive camera slung round neck nd they have no problems. Still wouldn't recommend it, try and be discreet. Bangkok is NOT dangerous.

2) You can find everything you need there.

3) No idea about any hotels mentioned.

4) Backpackers generally don't stay in hotels they stay in hostels.

5) You can buy a BTS card at any station and SIM cards are sold everywhere, corner shops, 7/11s (these are every 10 yards).

6) What sort of tourist things are you interested in? We can't recommend unless you give us an idea. There's a ton of cool temples, palaces, buddha statues (emerald, gold, giant etc), markets and lots lots more.

One thing I kind of regret now looking back at it in retrospect is when I was in BKK, I spent 99% of my time on or around the Sukhumvit area. I wish I had spent time in other areas of BKK. I'd like to ask those who have spent 6+ months which other districts/areas of BKK would you recommend to stay at and look for an apart? Somewhere that's on or not far from the BTS or the MRT, but would rather the BTS than the MRT for some reason.

Thanks!

Gringo,
Looking back at my time in BKK, sadly not much. Yeah, I partied my ass off like rarely before. Did the usual touristy stuff in BKK and other parts when I left BKK, worked a bit on my biz, but apart this, didn't do or go anywhere near what I was hoping to do/achieve while there. Definitely had a ball there and now I know, what to do next time and above all, what NOT to do.
