General Apartment Renting Tips

Sometimes it's just a matter of typing "city + apartment + rent" in Google, but right now in Copenhagen that's not doing the trick. Do you have any favorite resources or strategies, no matter which country?

Here's a couple:

http://www.craigslist.org
http://www.sublet.com ($10 for 3 months but very few listings)

There are also country-specific roommate finders...

http://www.compartoapto.com/ (couple dozen countries)
http://www.dba.dk (Denmark)

Good question Roosh. I get the feeling the English oriented websites advertising apartments in non-English countries inflate their prices. My plan of attack as of now is to stay in a hotel for a couple days and feverishly track down expat bars looking for advice for realtors. Not sure how effective this will be though. I'm open to suggestions also.

I've tried this. The odds that a handful of random expats in a bar will know of an available furnished rental within your budget range and location needs is about zero. [Image: smile.gif]

What has worked for me in Colombia and Argentina is simply walking around town until seeing a real estate brokerage and stopping in. It might take all day or 2 to find a decent place but online listings can be outdated and overpriced.

CPH, and all Denmark really, is effing expensive. Would you consider staying in Malmo and commuting in?

If you are really hard-core you could try a squat, if they still have them in Copenhagen. Or pretend to be a hippie (no offence intended but you do sort of look the part) and look for a place in Christiania.

Otherwise, for more conventional options try to find someone going on holiday who is prepared to sublet for a few weeks. Though that's easier said than done...

Agreed.

You can barely get a hot tip on a nightclub from your average expat.

I typically have a place more wired in a few days than most expats.

Finding a great apartment in a great location is so important.

This might be a good idea for a subforum: Great apartments people can vouch for.

Hell, I would pay extra for those kind of Data Sheets.

Roosh, thoughts?

I generally do a google search to see if there's some sort of online forum for expats in that country.

Is there more interest in this? I'm under the impression that there aren't many guys here who rent apartments while traveling.

It is worth looking into.

But, I think the hardest part will be trying to keep out the spammers.

This can be tricky. Renting is one of those industries that has local quirks at every level and every country and culture has different idea of what the "rights" of tenants are. It is VERY easy to get screwed.

Generally, I try to put location (convenience, safety, transport links) above aesthetics. In other words, give me a crappy place in a nice area before a nice place in a shithole any day.

In China, it was easier since there were generally "foreigner areas" which were the only places foreigners were allowed to live when China first opened up. So in Beijing places like Sanlitun and Chaoyang had foreign friendly realty firms just because.

In other areas, I don't know a perfect formula. Usually a good place to start is near major universities. There are usually nice places near the campus or you can see them advertised on campus bulletin boards (if you can read the local language). You can even contact their study abroad office and make up some shit about you are a visiting student and want to know where the good places to live are.

This may sound really green, but you can also ask the local embassy, chamber of commerce, or American club for info. Somebody there usually knows or can hook you up with someone who does.

I was thinking that as well.

However, I remember a while back some cat came on here with an apartment in Cali that someone else vouched for, so it might help as well.

I do think there is a pretty heavy interest. Especially as people on here seem to grow and take longer and longer trips.

"Renting is one of those industries that has local quirks at every level and every country and culture has different idea of what the "rights" of tenants are. It is VERY easy to get screwed."

Exactly. That is why having a subforum of apartments where guys have used would be literally invaluable.

Also, the subforum could be "Accommodations".

Dope, well located hotels are what I spend to much of my life finding.

And hostels for the younger cats on the rise.

Personally, I am really more interested in the "where" about places. Ie Nightclubs, Bars, Restaurants, Hotels, Day Game etc.

I am all good on the technique and Game (you know the "You need to act slightly aloof but not too cocky, and kind of funny and wear a glittery shirt and spike your hair, and never ever buy girls drinks and don't smoke cigarettes, and stay on a low cal diet, but only if you have blond hair and you are half latin but you are in really good shape, and you are super direct with strong inner Game, and you should always text and facebook girls and join online sites because flaking is out of control these days and remember to do magic tricks in the bar to pick up upper class girls in Mauritius" type stuff).

I know if I put myself in the right place, it will all work out.

And if I can save a few nights trying to figure it out and get it wired, all the better.

Thoughts?

I always check the newspapers. Most have an "apartment" section.

Roosh, I would definitely be interested in an apartments section.

My strategy is mostly for EE, it goes at follow :

- If you have a contact at your destination who speaks the native language, ask for links to the most popular rental sites for the country. Browse the site, set up appointments with the help of the contact. Go to viewings with your friend. If the renter doesn't accept short-term rentals or hikes up the rate because you're a foreigner, put your contact/friend's info on the lease agreement and haul ass after a few months. This is acceptable behavior in some countries.
- If no local contact, use google.sl, google.sk, google.ru or whatever and search for rental sites in the native language. Do the above leg work without a contact. If no luck, the previous searches will have returned the address of many sites targeted at short-term rentals for expats or travelers.
- Ask on the CS forum for that particular city for even more leads.

Here are some resources I gathered for a previous western-europe travel, but never used :

I removed the expatriates.com link. It was all scammers who weren't in town but would "mail" me the key after I wired some funds.

I think this is good info to have on the forum. As G said the up and coming G's do the hosteling thing. However, for me I exclusively rent a nice apartment when I travel anything longer than 3 days.

I really like the idea of getting a local to help you look through a local news paper. I think I have over paid many times from booking directly from websites. However, I like to plan ahead and if it is a particularly turisty area finding something last min can be a hassle.

Here's one for Cape Town: http://www.accommodationshop.co.za/Index.asp

They have some pretty swish pads especially if you can line up a few people to share a place.

As a caveat I did try to use this company but they were a little slow in getting back to me and I'd arranged something else in the meantime.

Best areas to stay are probably Camps Bay or Clifton.

Some things I didn't see mentioned which might help.

Try a local newspaper. If you don't get the physical paper, try to get the url and check the classifieds online.

Another thing you might be missing is the local lingo. For example, the literal translation for apartment rent in google translate into spanish is "apartamento en alquiler" but just to use Colombia as an example they don't use the word alquiler, they use the word "arendar" and they don't use the word "cuarto" meaning room or "dormitorio" meaning bedroom they use the word "alcoba" which basically means bedroom for them... if you use the local keywords you'll get a lot more hits, so find those local keywords, they might not necessarily be the literal translations from english.

So maybe it's just a case of striking up a conversation with the local women to find out what those local keywords are, could make for a very genuine opener.

For Sweden, mostly long term apartments, in case anyone is interested.

I like this idea. It could be used for hotels too. Like hotels near the good clubs. Or hotels that dont let you bring girls back to your room--like the Poytaht in Tashkent. Or the one in Tashkent that does, which is the Intercontinental. Would be nice to mention that short-term apartment I rented in Buenos Aires from a lady who kept my deposit for a bullshit reason (lost her website link).

How about this idea: a subforum where each country or major city gets its own thread, and then apartment/hotel recommendations can go inside. This way if you're going to one specific country, you don't have to sift through a lot of threads.
