I don't see what the big deal with product placement is. I'd much rather characters in movies use brands that we all know because it's far more realistic. In the Sopranos, a lot of the guys wear Fila tracksuits for example. Guess what, Italian gangsters actually wear that brand quite often. It wasn't thrown in there to give Fila exposure (although I'm sure it didn't hurt).

There's also a scene where Paulie is drinking Yoohoo chocolate milk (lol). I later looked it up and apparently Yoohoo was a NJ-based company.

Absolutely -- even random minor items they use (milk, shipping logos on random trucks that drive by) are local to the tri-state area.

Yoohoo really was ubiquitous around the tri-state area in the 90's.

It wasn't chocolate milk, it was chocolate milk flavored "something" that went down easy. There's a chain of italian ices that has a yoohoo flavor; incredible.

It was popular in New England. Snapple was also popular in NJ but I don't remember any references in The Sopranos.

Tony, by the way, is a hell of a repository for "Agree and Amplify" and myriad other verbal quips and comebacks. His verbal intelligence makes the show -- even his errors.

I feel like media on organized crime is very lacking currently. Goodfellas, Sopranos, Godfather are arguably the best movies and tv show but currently there is no media focusing on organized crime that is really comparable to those great movies/shows. I'm watching boardwalk empire and to me it doesn't even come close to the sopranos. So far I feel like season 1/2 are much better then season 3/4.

Boardwalk was amazing for Seasons 1 and 2. Even 3 was really good.

It's an abortion after that. And I hate having to say that, because I wanted it to be great. But the talent of the Sopranos technical crew and the energy of Scorsese's pilot really carried the first few seasons.

Not sure if this has been mentioned. Joe Pantoliano played Ralph Cifaretto for two seasons. He was interviewed and dropped a serious red pill truth about his experience.

"After a Sopranos episode in which his character brutally beat a young stripper to death, during an interview he stated, "After the episode aired a lot more women started hitting on me. I thought it was very revealing."

My favourite show of all the time. Sadly it never took off in Italy (where the characters heritage is from) due to shitty dubbing and the episodes being aired at 11pm.

My two favourite scene:

When Tony says "we gotta hit first" you can see in Sil face that he does not agree at all, but even though he's the consigliere he can not go against the boss since its too late in the game. Also the first time where Bobby Baccala is given any real sign of respect from Tony, all mixed with the amazing reference to raging bull playing the Intermezzo.

This is probably the saddest scene of the whole series. When Tony tells Uncle Junior about this thing of ours and how he used to ran North Jersey all he could answer was "oh that's nice". Anyone that has had a relative with dementia can recognise the blank stare in their face and the sadness in knowing that all the memories you have built together your whole life have been flushed away from the illness.
Then you are just powerless and left in tears as Tony is in this scene.

I think this scene is about the futility of life... and Tony recognizing the fact that life is, in the end, meaningless. Junior made it to old age after being the head of a family only to dismally wither away, alone, in a cloud of nothingness. This scene is about Tony recognizing a harsh truth, and both figuratively and literally walking away from it, as he always does.

Been taking my time going through this show the past couple months. About to finish season 6, The Sopranos has definitely become one of my all time favorites. Planning on going through this thread in its entity once I finish the series to add my two cents on just how beautifully red pill the show is.

Also just noticed that HBO's prequel movie, The Many Saints of Newark, will feature Gandolfini's son as the young Tony Soprano in 1960s Newark.

Almost finished watching it for the first time. Already the best show i've seen.

One thing that struck me, is the casting of Gandolfini; as the brutish, not conventionally handsome alpha is quite key to much of its realism, and something that likely wouldn't be tolerated by audiences today. Tony's appeal would trigger too many vice articles about patriarchal oppression etc and comparisons to Weinstein etc. But anyone watching that show with a brain can feel how real the interactions are, between Tony, his wife and all the goomahs. You just know that many of the storylines and events will be roughly transcribed from real life experience or reportings from the mob.

I think the Italian mafia genre (The Sopranos, Godfather, Goodfellas etc) was so successful purely because of the realism they portray thats so lacking in almost every other movie or tv show. Watching them feels almost like an education on social ladders and alpha qualities.
