Today I had the priviledge of going on a hunt with a red tailed hawk. We set him out on a ridge and flushed out some rabbits at the bottom of a ravine. The hawk nailed a rabbit about 10 minutes into the hunt. Pretty awesome display to see in person. Unfortunately the rabbit was pregnant and it was a pretty gruesome sight to see the hawk dispatch the babies in the mother's stomach. I understand that, that is a necessary part of the process and I'd say that I'm interested in learning the craft. Pretty neat stuff.

Lol, when they decided to call this the "Everything Else" forum, they really meant everything else!

Never heard of this sport before but I looked it up on youtube and that's incredible that they can teach raptors to be hunting partners.

Yeah I'm gonna try to trap my own hawk later this year. I'm pretty stoked.

Apparently falconers use Golden Eagles to hunt and kill wolves. They also use them to hunt deer. There's footage of it on youtube. One eagle actually picks up a small goat and drops him from a few hundred feet to kill him. Crazy.

This is a popular passtime in the Gulf region (UAE, Saudi etc.). Apart from the sport aspect there are falconry companies that specialise in using falcons and hawks to kill or scare away pigeons (rats with wings) from hotels, air conditioning inlets and so on. Definitely one of the cooler ways to make a living. I think the Burj al Arab in Dubai has a resident Falconer. No reason a market couldn't be developed (if there isn't already) in any other big city with money and too many pigeons. Sounds like a business oppportunity to me.

I believe the Perigrine Falcons are the most popular. Have seen them in action a few times. Those birds are FAST.

Bad Hussar, I've heard of a guy in Santa Barbara that get's paid to have his falcons patrol the beaches. I think you're right, there's def a business op.

I've read it in the paper a few years back about Toronto Pearson using hawks or eagles to keep other birds away from landing and take off areas. Not sure if they still are doing that.

Agree that it could be a good business, setting up a camp at the airport and charging 'airport tax' for a clear take off/landing area.

They are definitely very bold, the wild ones are known to attack airplanes if they have landing lights on.
