Sleeping on rooftops worldwide

I'm going on a trip to some place not yet chosen with a limited budget, and I'm looking for some creative ways to spice things up. To go "manual-mode" without plans for a more "real-time" experience. Solve eventual upcoming problems on demand as you say.

I'm wondering if anybody tried sneaking on rooftops from the outside for free accommodation? How difficult would it be to find a building/houses/construction sites/etc with a discrete and accessible roof in cities and towns?

I understand the idea of sleeping on a store or apartment rooftop would be frowned upon, it just sounds nice to be able to sleep under the stars for free. I'm also used to sleep on hard surfaces without a pillow so that won't be a problem. And my physical fitness is on top.

You will get away with it in cities but if anyone vindictive sees you on the roof with your gear and the police come, they may be harsh. People can be really cruel and blow things out of proportion.

If you won't bring your gear up, you won't sleep very well. And you will always be worried about people catching you, and this will fuck with your sleep.

If you really want to stay in cities, then... But have you thought about camping grounds outside of the cities? Or isolated parks in the countryside?

Basically you can do it, but if you do it for an extended period of time it will negatively affect your health. You will look like an unhealthy hobo.

This is self development forum, I don't think many of us are willing to be travelling and living in terrible conditions while travelling. Are you also looking to pull girls to your rooftop?

Listen, life can be easier and way more comfortable. You are from a country where you have plenty of jobs available. Get a decent job, save some money then think about travelling. Or save a bit of money, move abroad and start an internet business like many of us did, if it fails, go back home.

Sleeping on rooftops is not something cool and nothing what this forum is about.

You are also under-estimating how dangerous other countries can be. The wrong guys see you sleeping on rooftop, they decide to set you up and you will get robbed. There are so many cons with that decision that I don't recommend it at all.

I agree wholeheartedly with this one. Also, on one of the first nights I arrived in East Asia, I was offered the chance to sleep on a rooftop. I was initially very positive, with my mind fixated on the romaticised idea of sleeping under the starts, but was very glad for not doing it after being half eaten alive after leaving a tiny window open in my apartment.

If you really want to indulge in this sort of thing for sentimental reasons, consider sleeping on a beach.

I also agree with Pitt. Sleeping on rooftops is extremely low class. If I ever caught somebody sleeping on my rooftop I'd purposely be a major asshole and would be as rude about it as possible.

Let's be honest, it is not necessarily terrible condition to be sleeping outdoors. Just to make that clear. For this kind of trip I have no desire to pull girls, so no.

Sure. I can get a job, save cash and book a flight+hotel, taxis, shopping malls, spa, dinners, clothing,.. and so on. But I've done that and that kind of comfortable, controlled and preplanned kind of trip does not appeal at this moment. I was more concerned about the safety issue of my idea since that is an aspect I don't want to gamble on to a large extent.

This was more of my concern, although I believe the level of danger is location-dependent.

I did it many times when traveling around the US.

If you are young, early 20's or so, then this is a great thing to do. It is part of self development, led me to a mindset that I can get away with just about anything...perfect when gaming girls/job opportunities. And it provides for some great life experience/story telling.

The easiest places were department stores just outside of town. Just park in the parking lot, find the ladder, and up you go. You will wake up early when up on a roof, most of the times before the store even opens, so you can be out without anyone ever knowing you were there.

It was great when I couldn't find a place to camp out...that's another thing. Its very easy in the United States just to park on the side of the road, head into a field or some forest, and find a free camp spot.

Did that dozens of times, only slept on a roof three times, and never once had a problem, I even camped right in the middle of a city park in Seattle. Tent and everything.

Man, you should definitely try to get some girls to bang on the roof, it can be part of your game that night. Young chicks love adventure...I bang young girls on my rooftop often...even in the rain, they go nuts about it. Kind of hard to keep a hard on in the cold rain, but it works.

Do it and make sure you report back.

**When I was a teenager, my friends and I organized a party on the roof of a blockbuster that was outside of town. We had everything...music, girls, even had pizza delivered.

It was all well and good until a couple of bozos started throwing bottles off the roof into the parking lot. That set off some car alarms and we had to scatter.

I think if this strategy really worked then homeless people would've beat you to it.

I don't like "limiting beliefs" of any kind, but I truly think your idea is a bad one. You can find plenty of adventure during the day, but nothing beats being able to come home to a comfortable king sized bed.

Well obviously not for OP. People have different values, especially in different phases of their life.

I don't know where you intend to travel, but just some words of advice. If you try to sneek up on somebody's rooftop in South America, they might mistake you for a burgular and you might get shot at. I climed up a balcony to enter my house in Montevideo and this what my landlord told me.

Sounds like a good way to A) Catch a cold and/or B) Get killed. I wouldn't do it.

In Medellin theres a place called international house where the guy running it there might let you stay on the rooftop. Probably 10-20 USD a night.
