Chinese city sealed off after bubonic plague death
30,000 residents of Yumen are not being allowed to leave and 151 people have been placed in quarantine after man's death

A Chinese city has been sealed off and 151 people have been placed in quarantine since last week after a man died of bubonic plague, state media said.

The 30,000 residents of Yumen, in the north-western province of Gansu, are not being allowed to leave, and police at roadblocks on the perimeter of the city are telling motorists to find alternative routes, China Central Television (CCTV) said.

A 38-year-old man died last Wednesday, the report said, after he had been in contact with a dead marmot, a small furry animal related to the squirrel. No further plague cases have been reported.

CCTV said officials were not allowing anyone to leave. The China Daily newspaper said four quarantine sectors had been set up in the city.

"The city has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month," CCTV added. "Local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition." No further cases have been reported.

Bubonic plague is a bacterial infection best known for the Black Death, a virulent epidemic that killed tens of millions of people in 14th-century Europe. Primarily an animal illness, it is extremely rare in humans.

The US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) says modern antibiotics are effective in treating plague, but that without prompt treatment the disease can cause serious illness or death.

Wow this is pretty scary stuff. Even if the disease is probably easily cured using modern medicine, it has killed a hell of a lot of people throughout history.

Hygiene is at an all time low in China so in a strange way this might be good for China. Force them to clean themselves up a little and correct all the stup1d sh1t that goes on there. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

The Chinese have a really bad habit of doing absolutely disgusting things without regard for anyone but themselves, in essence they are selfish bastards: http://www.chinasmack.com/2014/stories/c...tions.html

I've seen children and ADULTS taking sh1ts on newspapers in Nanjing for all to see, they think NOTHING of it. People in Wuhan hork and spit more than any other city I've seen and snot rockets occur every couple of seconds. Just look at any tree and you'll see more than one chinaman with one-thumb pushed up against a nostril blowing boogers out as hard as he possibly can. Not just at trees, this occurs at the dinner table, on the subway, at a school (on the carpet), basically wherever they are if they get any kind of urge, they act on it.

I once saw a homeless guy sitting infront of a crowded escalator in Guangzhou, beat off and then EAT IT in full view of everyone. People spit, hork, piss and sh1t in every possible place, doesn't matter if there is a public washroom nearby or not. Often times you'll be walking and see a huge mound of sh1t on the sidewalk and if you look around there aren't any dogs. The other disgusting thing is the 4 inch finger nail that guys grow on their pinky to dig out ear wax and boogers. They flick it anywhere they see fit. Sitting on a train to Guangzhou a somewhat wealthy man sat beside me, proceeded to eat sunflower seeds and flick his shells onto the ground, then he stuck one finger in an ear and twisted his hand vigorously until he managed to pull out some greasy orange ear wax after which he rolled into a ball and flicked into the aisle. This is the kind of pigsty that creates disease and viruses and Chinese people think absolutely nothing of it.

And Chinese guys wonder why women don't want to date them.
