Initially I thought about dropping a data sheet giving a more complete overview of the city, but there are already threads on this. Also, I'm a local who has lived here most of my life, so my depictions will most certainly not match the ones of a gringo who wishes to visit or live here for the medium term.
So I'm going to focus on nightclubs. I have a done a lot venue experimentation last year, so apart from spending my hard earned corporate slave wage and banging a few hoes in the process, I figure I could give visiting RVFers some info for free.
First of all, check this thread by Ringo. Plenty of info here.
Glossary
Three words related to nightclubs in Brazil you absolutely need to know the meaning:
Consumação: when you enter the venue you agree to pay an entrance fee. This can include consumação or not. If it's too hefty, it will most likely include consumação, which is part of the entrance fee that you can revert into drinks at the club. It can be part of it, or the totality. It comes in the shape of a card, that you give the barman in exchange for your drinks at the bar. If you lose the card, rush to the bar and tell that to the barman as soon as you realize you no longer have it. He will ask for your ID number (which you gave in the entrance), and proceed to cancel the card and give you a new one. Bear in mind that if someone else found it on the floor or wherever you left it in the meantime, they will invariably screw you by drinking on your expense until you cancel it. You pay at the exit, so if you drank more than your "initial deposit", you will obviously pay more.
Camarote: This is the VIP area. Some clubs will only allow you to the camarotes if you're doing bottle service at one of the tables, but some others will give you an individual "pulseira" (a plastic bracelet) so that you can have access to these areas without having to buy bottles. Of course, you will pay more than the regular fee for that, but less than what you would pay for a table. So it's advisable if you have disposable cash, mainly because it gives you more targets at the club to work on, as well as access to a bar that is much less busy and easier to get drinks.
Sertanejo: This is Brazilian country music. It has become really popular in recent years among Brazilian middle and upper class girls, so it's a natural consequence that sertanejo clubs are being opened everywhere. You don't need to know how to dance sertanejo in these clubs to successfully pick up, even though it helps.
Now on to the actual clubs. They're divided by region.
Vila Olimpia
Villa Mix - High-end sertanejo club. This is the most popular (as in, everyone wants to go to) club in town, so getting inside is quite difficult, unless you get there real early (before midnight). The workaround is to bribe the bouncer. A bill of BRL 20 per guy should do the trick, but do it discreetly (this is no different than Hollywood clubs). Also, if you have more disposable cash, I suggest you to skip the main entrance and go directly to the VIP entrance on the side (where the "camarotes" are). You pay BRL 250, of which 180 is "consumacao", but it's easier to get in, you'll have access to a lot of talent, and it should be a more pleasant experience over all than hanging out on the dance floor (which is huge btw). Girls: a lot of hot girls, most of them dressed in short and sexy dresses. High attitude (this is the "in" club in town, remember), and bitch shields can be high, depending on whether the dickheads at the door have relaxed the entrance policy that particular night and let too much sausage in. But I've banged quality girls I've met here from solo cold approaching, so it's surely doable, even though you can probably find higher ROI elsewhere. Open: Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Wood's - Another sertanejo club. Remember the Villa Mix tip about getting a "Camarote" card. Same applies here, although it's cheaper (BRL 200 with less consumação), and the entrance is the same for everyone, so you just go up to staff behind the rope and say you're in for the camarote. They will let you in because you're paying more (there's no free lunch), and you'll skip the massive line. Important: I never had to bribe here, while in Villa Mix it's pretty much a given if you get there late. Inside, it's similar to Villa Mix, but with a lot less talent and much smaller. So there's no real reason to come here, and if you want to go to a sertanejo club but spend less than at Villa Mix, go to Villa Country instead. Open: Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Royal Club - This preppy club used to be in Centro but moved to Vila Olimpia last year. I went a lot to the older location, it was a very small venue (tough to go solo), with young-ish crowd and decent talent. Football player Ronaldo owned a share here and could be seen on one of the "camarotes" more often than not, especially in his final career years. The new location is much bigger with a smoking patio upstairs, so going solo shouldn't be a problem. Dress up. Take it easy with the drinks here, as they're quite strong for some reason. Hip hop, house, top 40 and even Brazilian funk are played here. Open: check out FB page for the exact info.
Kia Ora Pub - This place calls itself an Australian/NZer pub, but I'm pretty sure 99% of Brazilians (myself included) wouldn't for the life of them be able to tell the difference between that and an English or Irish pub. Anyway, the important thing is that this place is a goldmine if you don't mind older, career type girls (25-35 age bracket). The women at Kia Ora are down, and me and my friends have pulled many a ONS from here. The place has decent live cover rock band shows, and two floors. The first one is where the stage and the dance floor is, and it gets pretty mad after 1 AM or so with most people hooking up. Brazilians call it "guerra" (which means war in portuguese). The second one is where you can find a few mixed groups sitting on tables and a few smaller groups standing, and it's not bad for pick up either. Open: Wed-Sat.
Limelight - This is the most famous cougar club in the city. And I'm talking real cougar here, with ages ranging from 30 to... 60, even though you can find women of all ages here. I once hooked up with a very cute 18 year old girl here, after some time I asked her if she wanted to leave with me for sex, she said she was down but I had to ask her divorcee mom who was with her at the venue!!! Obviously the mom cockblocked me. It was one of the most surreal moments of my nightclub "career". Anyway, even if you don't like cougars, this is always a fun experience. DJ starts the night spinning Abba and then progresses through dance hits of the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, until modern top 40 stuff. Open: Thu-Sat.
The History - At walking distance from Limelight, this is another cougar club, very similar but not nearly as good as the former in my experience. They have access to the main room and this weird system of different "camarotes" with a small difference in prices. They also take nostalgia to a whole new level with wide screens showing cartoons from the 1980s and such. Anyway, if you're looking to hunt cougars, Limelight is probably a better bet. Open: Thu-Sat.
Itaim
She Rocks - This probably qualifies as a pseudo rock club, but it's slightly posh and expensive. Live rock bands play to a small dancing floor, with the occasional house played in between the shows. There's an area upstairs which is less crowded and better to relax after you already have a girl in your arm. Slightly older crowd (25-35), and usually pretty good m/f ratios. This is one of the few venues I have went several times and never bombed at, so obviously one of my favourite clubs at the moment. Open: Thursday (happy hours), Friday, Saturday.
Provocateur - Posh club that I've never been to, but have heard a few positive second handed accounts. Worth checking out on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Disco - Another posh club at Itaim. This one is quite traditional in the sense that it has existed for more than a decade. It's a small venue with VIP tables taking up 80% of the space, with the rest being corridors and areas surrounding the bars. Some decent DJs playing house music. Typical American-inspired club with a focus on bottle service, but tables are too expensive and this venue lacks in female talent, and even the 5s and 6s will give you attitude. Don't bother unless you want to bare a dysmal ROI. Nobody goes there anymore, anyway. Open: Thu-Sat.
Sailor Pub - Pub located at Avenida Faria Lima, it has three floors. First has a stage and a dance floor. On busy nights it can get very hot (I'm talking real body temperature here) and claustrophobic. Second floor is more spacious and probably better for pick up. Third floor only has tables with people that are there to eat. Nothing special about this venue, really, apart from the fact that it opens on Sundays.
Aurora - This is a bar and not a club, and on most nights it will be composed mostly of mixed groups sitting down at tables and not mingling. However, on Saturday afternoons, and especially on Sundays, this has more of a party vibe with lots of pairs and small groups of single girls looking for some action, and most people up from their tables and mingling. One of your best options if you're in the city and want to run game on a Sunday afternoon/early evening.
Pinheiros
Casa 92 - This venue is huge (recently enlarged) and has many different areas. The main one is a house with different rooms that emulate a "house party" feel, which can make it a tough place to work solo. Outside there are two outdoor dance floors, plus two different areas upstairs, one with an outdoor lounge with some tables and an indoor dancefloor, another one with a bar/lounge. This club plays "alternative" electronic music and more often than not attracts the hipster types. Women are usually over 25, but most of them are on the carousel. I don't consider this a true hipster club, because, judging by my results, social proof is important here. I've got more action here when I went with my friends rather than when I went solo. So I like to call it a pseudo hipster club.
. Open: Thu-Sat.
Bar Secreto - Tiny bar with a small dancefloor. This is another pseudo hipster club, where girls appear alternative but will promptly ask you "who are you with here" after you approach them. Go with a wingman and put your name on the website list to avoid hassle. There's always some talent there, but m/f ratios can vary a lot. So I strongly recommend you to scoop the line and even the confirmed guest list on FB before deciding to pay the hefty entrance fee to get in, to avoid being stuck in a sausage fest. Open: Tue-Sat.
Caribbean Disco Club - This club used to be called Happy News back in the day. It attracts a very young crowd and plays the usual top 40 stuff and Brazilian pop music. Open: Thu-Sat.
Vila Seu Justino - This is a more of a bar, but on Sundays it gets live bands playing pagode/samba and a very decent amount of female talent that you can run game on, provided they are not in mixed groups.
Jardins/Rua Augusta
Ballroom - Located on the rich part of Rua Augusta, this is a posh electronic music club. Some hot girls on the younger side will be here (18-23). It's more focused on bottle service but you can always do some damage on the dance floor too. Entrance fee is BLR 200 consumação. Open: Thu-Sat.
Outlaws - Located across the street from Ballroom, this place used to be an electronic club called Mookai (very similar to Ballroom), but it gave place to Outlaws, which is a sertanejo/funk/pagode club. It opened some two years ago and was initally popular, but you don't see much people talking about it these days. Maybe give it a try if you're in the region. Check out FB page for open dates.
Lab Club - Indie/hipster venue located on the poor side of Rua Augusta, it plays rock and electronic music. Crowd is usually very young. Never been to.
Beco 203 - Hipster club, also located on the poor side of Rua Augusta. Also attracts a young, college crowd. Also never been to.
Centro
Lions - Cool venue with a massive terrace outside where people smoke and get a great view of the city center, and some nice electronic music playing in the background. I dislike the people that go there though, so not really my cup of tea. Also located at Centro. Thursday nights are LGBT if I'm not mistaken, and the other nights are gay friendly too.
Cine Joia - Located in a shithole of a street in Liberdade district, it's actually pretty cool once you get inside. It's an old cinema from the 1950's that now hosts music gigs of many different styles, from rock to samba, and a few parties as well. Easy to pick up as well, even in LGBT nights when there are fewer girls but no competition.a
Yacht - Same vibe as the ones above. Wednesdays and Saturdays are LGBT nights (notice a trend there?). On Friday it feels like a college party, the crowd will be mostly comprised of rich university kids, you'll struggle to find someone over 25 there. There's a traditional business school in the surroundings, that's why.
Brooklin/Santo Amaro
Club A - Located on the pool floor of the Sheraton hotel, this was one of my favourite clubs in the past couple of years, but unfortunately, quality has declined and the club is expensive (therefore, ROI has become lower than what I consider acceptable). Anyway, it's a cool club for the preppy types with a VIP area surrounding a big dance floor, and a pool deck outside which is good for smoking and approaching. The venue can differ radically based on the day of the week you go. In the middle of the week it's samba or pagode, on Thursdays it's sertanejo, on Fridays it's house with a youngish crowd (but ratios aren't the best), on Saturdays it's top 40 with a more mature crowd (aged 25-40, one of the best ratios in town). I still have a clean sheet here on Saturdays (went more than twenty times, never got less than a makeout). Check out the website for open days.
Brook's - Another sertanejo club. Same tip applies: skip the main entrance and go to the camarote entrance instead, you pay more but you have access to a whole new area with more targets. Beware: a lot of the girls circling the tables are actually "working", if you get my drift. This club is nothing special, and the prices are the same as Villa Mix, so unless you're in this zone (logistics), I recommend you to skip it. Open: Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Barra Funda
Villa Country - The mother of all sertanejo clubs. It opened more than a decade ago and still gathers a good following to this day. It's not as high end as the other sertanejo clubs mentioned in this data sheet, but the girls here are down. Go Thursday night for better quality. Also opens on Friday and Saturday.
d.Edge - The most internationally famous club in the city, it has received a top ranking several times by DJ Mag. The club is very cool with led panels, many floors and a terrace. Music playing is also very nice, if you like electronic music that is. Girls? Forget it. Friday is gay night, and the other nights are massive sausage fests too. This venue used to be good for picking up (I once pulled a virgin ONS from here), but these days are over. Come here if you're into afterhours partying (maybe you can find some easy targets after 4-5 AM), or if you're into the music. Open: Thursday-Saturday (Friday is gay night).
Clash Club - Same as d.Edge. Cool electronic music venue but its best days are long gone.
So I'm going to focus on nightclubs. I have a done a lot venue experimentation last year, so apart from spending my hard earned corporate slave wage and banging a few hoes in the process, I figure I could give visiting RVFers some info for free.
