Having grown up and lived in Phoenix, AZ my entire life, I visited Mexico numerous times as a kid. But in recent years I've been conditioned to avoid Mexico at all costs due to the drug war.
However, after meeting quite a few Mexican girls in France and finding this forum with such great data sheets, I've really been opened back up to Mexico. I need to revive my high school Spanish and take a trip down there. There's a volunteer organization I've worked with before that can set me up in Merida for up to 6 months. With data sheets like this I'm getting more and more inclined to contact them again.

Hey, I've been looking into volunteer orgs too. At this point I've only heard of a few legit ones like "All Hands" and one called "Cuso" for young professionals. If you could let me know in PM which one you volunteer for let me know!

Thanks man. I had a look, would definitely be better IMO to spend that money to get an apt. OR look into finding a host family. Too many of the volunteering agencies are cashing in on western ignorance and deep pockets lol.
Good to hear you had a good experience with them though. Definitely don't be afraid of Mexico! (Border towns sure.)
I would highly reccomend touring Tepito, that was my favorite part of seeing Mexico City. It's a shady as hell black market, but it's a really cool place that isn't like anything else I've seen anywhere in the world. Go with a Mexican who is familar- I used a tour company calle Journeys beyond the surface Mexico City(http://www.mexonline.com/journeysbeyond.htm), but any Mexican who is familiar should suffice. Great way to see a side of Mexico beyond the touristy stuff.
All in all great data sheet, it's one of my favorite cities.
