If you really care about these things, then go to the VPN section of wilderssecurity.org - they are pretty much the no.1 publicly accessible security site on the net. No one will argue with that.

From there, you can see what VPNs the real security experts use - it's all public knowledge - it just takes time.

But no, you won't go wrong on that one privacy site. But please, if you want an authoritative second opinion, the Wilders is your boy. Anti-Virus, Virtual Machines.

Oh, we haven't talked about Virtual Machines. And I think we should. A vital second shield in a multi-layered defense - whether you want to protect your computer from ransomware, or just surf the web with even more anonymity than you have now.

If you are interested in infosec you have to use VPN, Tor (even with its drawbacks it has its place), and Virtual Machines.

Someone needs to make a thread about Virtual Machines. It's a long involved subject, but not too difficult to get in to if you have someone to hold your hand. I can get you up to speed quite quickly if you like. It's free as well with programs like Virtual Box.

And the Virtual Machines section on Wilders is second to none with what you can pick up. The virtual box forum is like a linux forum - they do not suffer fools - and everyone who is not them is a fool - bunch of spergs - but Wilders is much more 'user friendly' shall we say.

VPNs and VMs go together like strawberries and cream, bacon and brown sauce, er, there's still someone knocking on my door, brb...

I just installed "Betternet" onto my browser. It is and add on to chrome, and it provides you with free VPN. It allows you to choose USA or Britain as your country. I installed this today and it actually seems to be working. It shows my ip as from the US and for the first time I can get websites from America that I could never get before. You click on the green box on the upper right to install it.

I use ProtonMail and ProtonVPN; my preference is to avoid Fourteen Eyes countries altogether.

The Proton stuff might be a tad more expensive but the ability to set up an account with crypto on a zero-knowledge platform based outside of the Fourteen Eyes is highly attractive, to me at least.

+1 ProtonMail. But just realize that using a VPN is an extra layer of abstraction that doesn't truly give you anonymity. Instead of being at the mercy of the ISP you are now at the mercy of the VPN. Nothing beats making common sense data and privacy decisions, especially on the internet.

For some stuff I only backup to an encrypted external HD via non internet connected linux computer. I don't have anything illegal but for personal document scans and backups this is the only foolproof way. In the end the only data that is reliable is the one you keep in your head, even that could go away or change over time.
