Feria de Cali (Colombia) 2013

Feria de Cali (Colombia) 2013

I love Cali! For more about Cali, my first thread about this wonderful Colombian city is here:

http://www.rooshvforum.network/thread-19152.html

At the end of 2013, I had the fantastic good fortune to experience Feria De Cali and the New Year in my favorite place in the whole world. This was my first time at the Feria and I wanted to soak up as much of it as possible. It was a very memorable trip, and I learned a lot more that I wanted to share with my fellow travelers.

My trip was carefully planned as usual, but differed somewhat from my past trips. 3 things I did I would not recommend to my fellow travelers looking to hook up with Calenas.

1. I did no online pipelining whatsoever. Online dating is something I don't do in NYC and although I tried it the last time I was in Cali, something about it feels unnatural for me. My bread and butter since my early RSD days has always been cold approach and social game, so I decided to rely on only those to meet girls this time around. But for everyone else, definitely pipeline!

2. Compared to my last trip, my level of Spanish diminished significantly, and it was something I chose to let happen for an entire year. This is something I do not recommend for people traveling to Cali - definitely pick up a conversational level of Spanish. From what I am able to determine, the amount of people speaking English in Cali has not increased one bit over 5 years.

3. Meeting girls was not the sole focus this trip so I didn't hit the streets as hard as I did in the past. I've been here many times before, I am planning a 3 month trip in the near future, and I plan to be a part-time resident sometime in the future as well. I had other goals which included lots of rest and daily naps and catching up on an enormous backlog of professional Starcraft matches while lying in a hammock, and thus did not plan entire afternoons spent visiting the universities and malls all over the city which I did during the previous trip. The advice in Bang Colombia holds true still in my opinion: if you only have a week or 2 coming here for the first time, be prepared to work very hard for the first time to maximize your chance of getting a flag.

Feria De Cali - for a general overview of what the Feria is about, please see the wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cali_Fair

Officially, the Feria is from December 25 until December 30, but in my opinion, city's transition to a celebratory and holiday mindset began on Monday the 23rd and lasted until New Year's Day. Everything was as usual in Cali up until Sunday the 22nd but Monday the 23rd felt different.

Monday, December 23

Met up with a bunch of friends in the evening to head to Las Brisas in Jamundi, south of Cali. The place is fully exposed to the outdoors with a roof overhead. The central area is a somewhat small dancefloor. Here is a video of 2 professionals dancing before the place gets busy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl...0vtYm8k5N0

You don’t find places like these in colder climates since everything would freeze in the winter. This is my usual Monday spot. I noticed that the level of dancing was higher than usual because
- FERIA! Normally the place closes around 1:30 but due to the Feria, it closed at 4 AM. Also because of the Feria, Swing Latino had several performances. They are the best performing group in Cali. A video showing their work is below. This was my first time watching them perform and I can say it was truly mesmerizing. As a dancer of many years, I’ve seen many great performances, but Swing Latino is at another level. The footwork I saw that night was SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the footwork in the video below, and was unbelievable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl...vbN4oSOOc0

I almost forgot to mention my favorite thing about this place - the available of cheap and delicious empanadas for 1000 pesos! Every time I come here, I buy at least 10,000 pesos worth for my group =D.

One thing I noticed was the slow infiltration of bachata in to Las Brisas and also other places in Cali. The hot song of the moment was Propuesta Indecente by Romeo Santos -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl...s3PIZb3js.

Every place I went to played this song at least once. Prior to this visit, I don’t recall a bachata song ever being played in Las Brisas.

Another thing I noticed was the increasing popularity of a type of music called salsa choque. It came on my radar a few years ago when I heard it randomly at a few parties but now, most salsa and crossover places play at least 1-2 songs a night. When the song comes on, someone who knows a lot of moves takes the lead at the front, and everyone follows them - Here’s an example of salsa choque at Las Brisas:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiltO_6knl8

That guy in the hat is there every Monday without fail. Group dancing is something I never see in clubs in the USA. It’s a wonderful feeling having half the people in the venue dancing in unison.

Tuesday, December 24 - Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve in Cali felt somewhat slow, but festive nonetheless. It is the day before the Feria officially kicks off. Most people spent the day and evening with their families. I spent the time watching Starcraft videos - you may begin to notice a pattern here. The nightlife on Christmas Eve does not begin until after midnight. A group of friends and I went to Cafe Mi Terra in Menga - at the outskirts of Cali to the north - here’s the facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/CafeMiTierraMen...tos_stream

This place is also exposed to the outdoors but not as much as Las Brisas. It’s a crossover place that plays a mix of music including salsa, merengue, bachata, vallenato, some electronic, American mixes, etc. As a fan of Spanish music, I consistently find the mixes here extraordinary. My group wound up being merged at a large table with another group, and that night, I met a girl that was damn close to a 10 for me - an olive-skinned Calena with long dark black hair, feminine, wearing heels and a form fitting dress, with a big booty and a sexy Colombian accent. I wound up spending hours chatting with her and getting to know her, dancing salsa, bachata, and sensual reggaeton. Night after night, week after week I go out in NYC and I don’t find girls like her. She was with multiple family members so we exchanged numbers and when I finally crashed on to my bed at 6:30 AM, there was an enormous smile plastered on my face.

Wednesday, December 25 - Christmas Day

Official kickoff day of the Feria de Cali. The main event of the festival is the Salsodromo - a massive day-long Salsa parade down one of the avenues -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOwk_jGlPmk

For hours, hundreds of salsa schools march down a route about 20 blocks long with floats while putting on performances with salsa blasting. I couldn’t get close enough - the street along the entire route was packed with many thousands of people. The best view I could get was at the very beginning of the parade.

The day game opportunities here are incredible - so many women to chat up, especially if you play up the “HI I AM A FOREIGNER” angle - beer is readily available from vendors everywhere along the route.

If you wind up going, do be careful - you are likely to be ambushed by foam ninjas:

In the evening, I met up with the girl from the previous evening for a dinner date, which went wonderfully. For the first time in a long time, I felt alive with passion - the game was actually fun with this girl who was so much more sexy and than any woman I had encountered in the past year. Girls like her are what make the game worth it for me. She had to call it a night early to work in the morning so I wound up going home at first. As I lay there on my bed reflecting on the events of the evening, I realized that I can go out hundreds of nights in NYC and I would have to hunt very hard in very specific locations to find a girl similar to her that was also not corrupted by Americanization. Here in Cali, I can meet them every day with ease, and the game is fun - very fun. The more I visit Cali and the more Colombianas I meet effortlessly, the more unappealing going out in NYC becomes. It’s like God made this place just for me - a land full of young, fun, feminine, in-shape Latinas with pleasant demeanors, big booties, olive skin, long hair, great fashion sense, and a love of salsa dancing. Back in NYC, it’s not fun. I have to sort through so much garbage and girls with bad attitudes that if it wasn’t for my love of salsa dancing, I probably would just stay home on weekends to play Starcraft 2 and Diablo III.

For those RooshV peeps reading this who have never experienced what women are like in a foreign land, please do yourself a favor and get yourself to a non-Anglo country such as Colombia or somewhere in Eastern Europe!

I thought my night was over but then I get a call from a friend telling me he’s got some dancers he wants me to meet, and that he was at a place called Jala Jala in Menga -

http://www.planb.com.co/upload/images/20...712_28.jpg

I hop into a cab and he introduces some people to me including a hot girl with a BOOTAY
(_|_) that likes to dance bachata. Everyone has a great time, and I leave with another phone number.

Thursday, December 26

For the Feria, the big event of the day is something called Cabalgata - it’s a parade of people on horseback wearing cowboy hats. I don’t get it except it has hot Calenas riding on horseback- that I do get.

http://www.berraco.com/images/uploads/Fe...C_8257.jpg

O_O

Due to the oppressive heat, I left early and retreated to my hammock. Early in the evening, I went with a buddy to a house party where I met a girl I went on a date with last year but had absolutely no chemistry with. She introduced me to her friend - a native calena that spoke no English whatsoever - there was a language barrier but she liked dancing with me.. She was clearly very interested in me and I got her number but I decided not to call her since she did not have large booty. I imagine she would be an 8-9 for many of the men here on this forum. For the third night in a row, I met another young, pleasant, feminine, well-dressed, slim girl. I went to meet with another group in a place called Tin Tin Deo that’s very famous for good salsa - http://www.tintindeo.com/.

I was having a great time when I received a text message from the girl I met 2 nights ago to come meet her at a place close by called El Rincon de Heberth, so I grabbed a buddy and went.

https://es-la.facebook.com/elrincon.deheberth

The place has 2 levels and is rather small but blasts great classic salsa and some cha cha cha. Outside there is a large parking lot where people sit on plastic chairs drinking chatting the night away while listening to the music blasting from inside. It’s very casual, and is a perfect laid back place to be out on a warm night. Smartphones did not dominate - people were actually talking to each other instead of busy texting people elsewhere. Our group happened to have some professional dancers capable of dancing Salsa On 1 and 2 so every time we stood up and danced we had an audience. The girl I was with wanted to dance Bachata so I went inside to talk to the DJ who happened to be a very old man but he told me he didn’t have bachata - only salsa salsa salsa and salsa. They really love Salsa here in Cali. The girl I was with went home early, and I stayed to party until 4 AM.

Friday, December 27

For the Feria, the event of the day is the Desfile de Autos Clasicos and Antiguas - parade of classic cars -

http://www.medellin.gov.co/irj/go/km/doc...C_7045.jpg

It’s yet another parade, except with cars. I didn’t go. In the evening, I went to the Superconcierto held at Cali’s stadium - Estadio Olimpico Pascual Gurrero. It started around 7 PM with the Vallenato group Binomio de Oro. The mood was very festive and people were singing along loudly to the song.

At 9 PM, Don Omar’s act came on. He’s a famous reggaeton singer. His music has appeared on the fast and furious soundtracks -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogBa0wUWjXk

Vin Diesel is blasting his music at the end of F&F 3. I’m a big fan.

At 11 PM, it was Marc Anthony - the highlight of the concert. I’m not super crazy about the guy, but apparently Calenos are - especially the girls. For the entire set, I couldn’t hear Marc Anthony sing at all. The women were screaming the lyrics which they all knew by heart - each and every song. To close out the set, he sang his newest hit - Vivir Mi Vida. The entire stadium exploded in screaming when it started. Vivir Mi Vida was THE salsa song at the time. I heard it at least once in every place I went to every night - in the taxis, the supermarkets, everywhere.

At 1 AM, Groupo Niche came on - they’re the most famous and commercially successful salsa band from Cali. Look them up on youtube or spotify if you are into salsa and haven’t heard of them before. You will certainly come across songs you’ve heard of before. For obvious reasons, Cali Pachangero was met with the most enthusiastic reception.

At 3 AM, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico came on - the most famous and commercially successful salsa band worldwide period. It was 3:30 AM when the stadium lights came on while they were still playing. I had enough by then - 8.5 hours of superconcierto. I went home and crashed.

Even if you are not a fan of this kind of music, I recommend you go anyway just for the experience. The entire time, I was sitting behind a beautiful young girl who had great rhythm. Every time there was music playing, she was on her feet dancing. As I get older, I find myself appreciating youthful feminine beauty more and more - beyond just banging. It’s so refreshing coming to a place where women are still women and can express themselves through music, rhythm, and dance. I didn’t see her checking her phone once the entire night. When music wasn’t playing, she was talking to her parents or just waiting around. Compare this to what you see in the USA - the chubsters can’t put down their phones even when the musicians are playing!

During the intermissions, people would line up to use the bathrooms before the next set. The line for the men’s room was short as usual… but the lines for the women’s restrooms… OH MY GOD. I wish I had my camera phone with me so that I could record what I saw and show everyone else on this forum. A line of women about 300 deep - mostly young, slim, well-dressed, etc. I damn near fainted.

They call it Superconcierto - and with good reason.

Saturday, December 28

After 5 nights of going out until at least 4 AM, I decided to give it a rest.

Sunday, December 29

At 10 PM, I went with a group of buddies to a club called Salsa.

https://es-la.facebook.com/salsanightclub

You can probably guess what kind of music they play in there. On a regular Sunday, this is a great spot for salsa music. Tonight was especially packed because of the Feria and it closed at 4 AM. For 6 hours, I listened to and danced to some of the greatest salsa. For a salsa lover like myself, this place is heaven. I was surrounded by people who had a similar love for the music. Cowbells and cascaras (salsa music instruments) were passed around for people to play to the music. If I remember correctly, the large bottles of aguardiente sold for $45000 pesos or about $23 dollars. People were sipping on the stuff all night from tiny cups - typical for Cali. I met a female professional dancer who I later found out was a member of the crazy Swing Latino group from the video above. Somehow I wound up in a friendly salsa shines battle with some Calenos from neighboring tables with extremely fast feet. Salsa shines step you dance to without a partner - basically showing off solo. Calenos are friendly in general but when you are able to communicate with them through salsa, it’s something different. They appreciate that you love their culture and welcome you more. Another great night in the books.

Monday, December 30

At night, I had a date with a different young Calena with long dark hair who loved to dance salsa (are you guys seeing another pattern here?). I met her a week ago but didn’t have the time to call her and when I did call, she picked up on the first ring. We went with a group to Las Brisas. Despite it being a work night for her with work the next morning, she stayed out with me until 3 AM? Cali people party hard. I had a great time getting to know her, dancing, etc., but the chemistry really wasn’t there so I wound up not calling her again.

Tuesday, December 31 - New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve was pretty dead throughout Cali. All the shops and restaurants closed early and there was nothing to do until late at night. After midnight, I went with a group to Cafe Mi Tierra again - I love that place. Even though it was New Year’s, it didn’t feel any more special than any other night partying in Cali. I wound up dancing with and spending a long time chatting up a gal from Bogota who had traveled to Montreal and France to learn different styles of salsa. I didn’t press any further since she was blonde.

Wednesday, January 1

New Year’s Day must be the deaddest day in Cali. Everything is closed. There is absolutely nothing to do during the day but thankfully the internet still functioned so I watched even moar Starcraft videos. At night, I went with a group to Las Tascas. For 1 or 2 weeks during Feria, the area immediately north of the Rio Cali is transformed to a big park with seating, vendors, and stages for concerts.

https://www.google.com/search?q=las+tasc...24&bih=735

The experience was magical for me. Enjoying a warm Cali night while listening to the sounds of salsa and the flowing river surrounded by colorful lights. I thought to myself - what the heck am I still doing in New York CIty? It’s below freezing there and everything outdoors has a layer of ice over it.

Thursday, January 2

During the day, most places were still closed. My friends bugged me to go to Tin Tin Deo again, but I decided to stay in. Partying for the prior 4 consecutive nights was taxing. Cali can be an endless party. If you need to be entertained during your vacation, I recommend not staying past New Year’s Eve - the first 2 days of the New Year are completely dead.

Friday, January 3

At night, I went with a buddy again to El Rincon de Heberth again. It was a good night except I had the misfortune of meeting a loud, overweight, short-haired gringa from London wearing flip flops and a sloppy t-shirt and shorts. Fail.

Saturday, January 4

I finally met up again at night with the really hot girl I had a few dates with the week prior. We went out dancing for a bit at a place in the North called El Viejo Barril -

https://www.google.com/search?q=el+viejo...24&bih=735

Afterwards, we went back to my place. I went to close and got real close, and even got to play with Colombian bobos but I couldn’t get past the LMR. We never know what women are thinking but if I had to guess what happened, I would say that the fact that I would be leaving her the following evening, was a concern of hers.

I was somewhat disappointed, but when I compared the experiences I had with her to what I have to go through back in NYC, it was all totally worth it. I met and connected with a wonderful girl - the type I dream about - the the kind that makes life worth living for me as a man. The fact that I didn’t score on this trip was a minor inconvenience. I didn’t go hard on the dating end, and as Roosh warned in his book - a rough patch during a short trip means you probably won’t get laid in Colombia. If you want to maximize your chances of get laid in Cali, pipeline very hard and get some preselection and rapport going before you land, learn Spanish and some Salsa On 1. It’s doubtful you’ll bang 31 girls in 25 days like these guys did in the DR

http://swooptheworld.com/dominican-girls-31-in-25/

but you might as well try =D. You’ll definitely meet girls that are more beautiful.

My trip was epic by any other measure. It gives me hope and fuel for grinding through life knowing that there is a magical place in the world for me that is far better than anything in the USA.

Sunday, January 5

I took a cab to the airport. It was a very busy night. All the seats in the waiting area were occupied. As I took one final stroll around the place before entering the boarding area, I noticed that the phone charging stations scattered throughout the airport were unused. People were not glued to their smartphones. There were some visible here and there but for the most part, people chatted with their families and friends. The women were dressed up and many were in heels. I compared the sight to what I see in LA and NYC - every single outlet at the station, in the corridors, and in restaurants taken over by the phone zombies desperate to keep their iPhones charged. Girls in Uggs and sweatpants. USA -> FAIL. Cali -> WIN.
____

A final note: Guys, if you’re reading on this forum, you’re probably interested in travel and foreign women. If you’re already doing it and living the life, that’s awesome, and good for you. For those who have never traveled - stop thinking about it and just do it. You don’t know what you’re missing out there. I’m not saying that I guarantee you will find that it’s better out there, but you owe it to yourself to go and find out for yourself. My life would be infinitely poorer had I decided Cali was a place too far off the beaten path to visit.

As I plan my next epic trip back to Cali, I will be busy playing the new expansion for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - it’s more fun than dealing with American girls. I’d rather slay imaginary monsters.

As they say in Starcraft win or lose:

GG!
