Space Music. Plain and simple. I was into punk and before that metal. I went to college but was never able to perform academic reading or writing with that stuff in the background.
I wandered upon space music. echoes.org, hos.com, di.fm space. this will train your brain.

It really depends on what I'm doing. If it's something almost mind-numbing I find I listen to softer music. If I'm writing code, though, I almost always need heavier music (hard rock, metal, etc) to get my mind in the zone and start pounding out a set of decent features.

I'm personally a fan of marconi union - ambient and super spaced out which lets you read without getting distracted.
Also, I've always found the Inception soundtrack to be amazing for getting in a zone with a goal. You get a lot of work done that way.
Massive attack is also great if you like a little more energy.
