"Would you make the same decisions in a foreign language as you would in your native one? Keysar, Hayakawa and Sun Gyu from the University of Chicago asked this question, and found out that the answer is “no”: our deeply rooted and irrational aversion to loss disappears when a problem is presented in a foreign language; we respond in a cooler, more rational way "

deeply rooted and irrational aversion to loss

I get the gist of the study, but why do they call this aversion irrational? If anything, that level of aversion is rational, whereas the other one is irrationally trusting!

There is a well known psychological aversion to loss in humans. Studies show for instance:

A common study might show that if you are presented with a bunch of different pens, you wouldnt really have a preference for one over the other. Buf if I give you one of these unremarkable pens and then ask you to trade for another, youll hold on to this pen as if its more valuable than mine, just because its now "yours".
