Anybody else interested in traveling and living for free by playing poker?

after a while I completely bought into the saying about poker: it's a hard way to make an easy living.

Online poker has become way too hard.

The days of making easy money playing online are long over.

I only have play money in my online poker accounts now and just play for fun.

Ehh, they're definitely harder, but not that hard to make decent money if you approach it professionally.

Hyper turbos are great if you can multitable and have a good grasp on the strategy.

I think I will stick with live games.

If anyone else has some candidate cities with soft live games (ones where you can easily make a month's rent by playing only once or twice a week) please post them here.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Data
==============================
Santo Domingo - The game at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel is fun and not too hard to beat. It is mostly expats, not Dominicans.

One of the pluses is that you get dinner for free. It varies from night to night what it is. Also you have to arrive at the right time to catch the food. Phone ahead to check but I think it was around 8 or 9pm from memory.

This casino is in a part of town called los cacicazgos. You need a taxi to get there and back but while you are waiting for the taxi home you can play with the cute tiny little terrapins in the waters by the entrance.

Closer to the centre of town you have two options.

Malecon centre on George Washington aka 30 De Mayo

The casino here has both cash games and tournaments and, unlike Dominican Fiesta Hotel it is mostly local people.

Quite often you will find famous Dominican baseball players at the tables here because they have the $$$.

Another plus is there is a Tony Roma's on site if you are in the mood for ribs.

The other option is the Melia Santo Domingo Hotel also on George Washington, right next to the Jaragua Hotel.

I would often play here just because its the nearest option to the Zona Colonial where I lived. Again mostly local players.

Sosua + Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic Data
===================================
Ocean world is an extraordinary up scale marina park with a hotel and casino where you can play cash games every night.

As you can see, they spent some serious $$$ setting this place up

I actually played poker there the first time one week before they even officially opened when they were in soft launch mode.

Its located west of Puerto Plata in Cofresi and not far from Costumbar.

Sosua is east of Puerto Plata so they are about half an hour drive apart.

There were two options in Sosua. Walk to the end of the nightlife st (pedro clisante) and it ends at a hotel. Just to your left before you get to the hotel there is the casino entrance. Its a super small casino.

They used to have a game there run by an American millionaire dude called Frank but Frank left DR years ago so I am not sure if anyone else has picked up the baton and is keeping the game running.

The other option was Playa Chiquita but its not in central sosua so you need a moto concho to get there and back.

I also heard that Pure casino in Puerto Plata has games going but I never played there so I can't comment.

Can second the data on older Argentines being terrible players. Had several "call machines" that would play everything and anything. Very easy to get money out of those guys.

Need to add the PlayWin casino in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to this list.

Game is $2-$4 No Limit Hold em

Truly awful players.

You could fairly easily live in Cabo just by playing this game. Usually does not going until 10pm or later.

Players are mostly drunk american tourists with the occasional ex-pat and local mexican thrown in.

Trick here is to work out what kind of player they are. Older retired dudes who live and play there on the regular willl call you down with King high on the river just because the money is nothing to them so dont bluff them.

Drunk tourists are easily bluffable however. Adjust your play accordingly. Showing bluffs to the table when you bluff a drunk toursts usually gets a huge laugh, a lot of pats of the back and a lot more action in subsequent hands.

On a bad night I would lose 2 or 3 thousand and would win 10,000 on a good night all from a buy in of 1,000.

I was playing this game every night for a week at the end of last month. Only on one night did they not have enough players to start a table. One night they had two separate tables going. Dealers and house staff were very professional.

Drinks were not free but were cheap and its right in the middle of the nightlife and strip club area. Location is on Blvd Marina.

Only play online poker for practice, don't play for money because online poker is rigged as hell.

Online poker software is rigged.

There are many websites and videos on youtube about online poker being rigged as I have experienced it myself.

Stick to live games.

Read books, WATCH videos on youtube of the professionals playing cash games and tournaments and try to emulate them.

Take down notes about mistakes you make when you play.

You have to put in the time and hours to get good.

WATCH VIDEOS, I can't stress this enough.

Whatever you do, learn how to FOLD, DO NOT become a calling station.

Anyone have experience with poker in Cambodia?

I was down at the big casino in Phnom Penh recently, but I just went to the club there. Didn't look around for poker. Place seemed big as hell.

Walked around the casino when I crossed over to Poipet too.

Definitely a gambling spirit here.

I used to play some online poker against Cambodians and Thais in a little gambling den downstairs from my apartment in Thailand. The site was run in Cambodia, but you could show up to the little internet cafe and put money on the account. Then cash out when you wanted.

My experience was the players were loose, so if you played conservative you could generally win, and I did that for a while. Even taught some of my Thai buddies how to tone their strategy down a bit, and they started winning more.

But eventually the combo of the gnarly swings playing with all loose players and constantly worrying about the local po-po stopping in to shake the place down, as they do from time to time in Thailand, was too much and I stopped. I didn't have a visa either and didn't want to get busted.

I used to play a lot of poker in America just before it went really big and consistently earned $100 - $200 every time I went and played the tables. Some bigger wins here and there. I was making too much money at work to make it worth the time though, so I stopped playing, and then the world went and got good.

Been years upon years since I was into it, so I'm pretty out of practice. Would be fun to get into again.

Gonna add Caisno Diria to this list. It's on the west coast of Costa Rica in a surf town called Tamarindo.

Its a really tiny casino but they will start a cash game any time they have 5 players or more. Outside of high season they may not have enough players most nights but they do have a tournament every friday at 7pm.

Tournament is basically a 2 table sit n go - $20 rebuy when I played. Didn't rebuy because I never lost my initial stack (which is 2k or 3k if you register in advance). Rebuys and late entries available for the first 90 mins.

I added on at the end of the 90 because the add on was 4k for only 20 bucks. Top 3 places paid.

Players are all tourists, mostly American and mostly bad players. I got shitty cards and flops for most of the tournament but still managed to finish in 2nd place for more than $250 from a $40 investment which more than paid for my trip to this place.

Soft game.

Edit : The reviews of this place on trip advisor are the worst I have ever seen based on their rigged blackjack table. Made me laugh because I never play house games in a casino but from reading the reviews it sounds like I am the only dude who ever left this casino with a profit. The casino took 10% on the poker game that I played but that pretty much par for the course.

I wonder how this worked out for the OP?

I'm at the level where I'm winning low stakes NL live cash games 9 times out of 10. My winnings are conservative though, since I'm playing at the 1/2 blind level. Online is still a shitshow and I never seem to win there so I have been sticking to live games. There's a bunch of casinos in the LA area that have terrible players.

If you know the fundamentals and can learn to check your emotions at the door and play purely by odds and by honing your gut instinct on reading people, you can absolutely make money doing it.

Bump. Anyone know of any decent live cash games in Europe?

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.
