Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy (author of No Country for Old Men)

This is exactly the kind of book I can imagine forum readers loving. It's also one of the dirtiest, most violent books I've ever read.

If you like Cormac McCarthy then you should check out "The Road." It's very grim and hopefully it isn't a foreshadowing of humanity's future.

Having read all of those, I liked All the Pretty Horses the most. That being said, I'm still pretty sure I despise Cormac McCarthy; although, I am not entirely sure.

Despise is a strong word...Why exactly?

Personally in those mentioned for me it goes, Blood Meridian and the Road and ATPH were tied. The imagery in Horses was really good and the Road is so bleak and dreary. Feels like today (grey, rainy and cold). Blood Meridian combines both beautiful imagery of Mexico, mountains and plains with this indescribable evil and sense of darkness and dread. The complete lack of love/romance, unlike Horses, makes it so harrowing. There is no hope in that book.

I hate his writing most of the time - but sometimes I find it refreshing, if only for an instance.

PS - I am currently reading a Canadian Constitutional Law textbook and it fucking sucks.

Just started on the road. Aside from that I've recently finished dancing under the red sun, how to get rich (the one recommended in the other thread), and a couple others related to programming (go, CSS mostly)

Only about halfway through this book. Today while reading it at work in front of all of my co-workers my eyes swelled up with tears. Stephen King's writing, even ABOUT writing, is powerful stuff.

Steven Pressfield has not disappointed me yet. His latest book comes out on Tuesday and I blind-bought it from Amazon. Prime subscription gets me the book on release day.

Finished Dostoyevsky's gambler.

Contains some really strong social observations, very smoothly melted in the dialogue of the narrating character.

''Steve Jobs'' by Walter Isaacson. Great book about one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the modern times. While Jobs was an erratic and troubled personality, he also knew how to squeeze out the best from the people who worked for him.

+1 for Shantaram.

I'm only 8 chapters in but it has completely revitalized my passion for travel and adventure. I would be lucky if the first 8 chapters of my bio were this good.

Another book that had a similar effect on me was Lost City of Z.

I've been on a bad esoteric binge. I've been fascinated by the history of the Masons and I've been getting into theosophy as well. Right now I'm reading The Secret Tradition of Freemasonry by A E Waite. Also if anyone is looking to get into the genesis of western occultism/magick (probably not) The Complete Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie is heady stuff.

This is probably anathema but Helena Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine will really make you think.

Had this book on my shelf for a while, thanks to Quintus Curtius' article, I finally cracked it open. At the end of essay 6 there's a quote by Quintus Curtius... I actually thought I was reading RVF for a second.

Ian Fleming is a very underrated writer. There are parts of "From Russia With Love" that are superb, and very long stretches of "Casino Royale" that are even finer. Some of the short stories are excellent, particularly one called "Quantum of Solace".

He truly loved his character and wrote about some of the best and purest manly activities in loving detail, so I'm surprised he's not even more popular on the forum.

same old shit, sixes and sevens Shaft...
