For anyone headed back to cowtown, I strongly suggest you check this hotel out: http://www.lemeridiencolumbus.com/

$200/night in the Short North, for what is usually a $500+/night hotel in LA or NYC. I stayed on the upper floor last summer right after it opened, and you can easily have a party in the upper suites. Usually I stay at the Westin downtown when I am back, its nice to have a cool hotel right in the middle of the Short North.

Great recommendation. That hotel is pretty dope, and there are sure to be others built and completed like it in the Short North.

Short North is really blowing up into this Chicago-esque high end neighborhood. No longer only popular for gays, hipsters and young professionals.

Every time I go to Columbus there are new developments and vibrancy in areas I had not seen before. Will be very interesting to see the city in the next 5-10 years.

I'm planning a quick trip to Ohio in Sept to go to a speedway meeting near Roseburg (Eldora). A couple of years ago I hired a car at Indy, went to the drag racing and then Eldora. This time I was just looking at a quick trip, fly into Columbus, speedway then back home.
Would anyone know a reasonably priced rental car company in Columbus?? last time I went Hertz (first trip to USA, wanted to play it safe) and it was ok but pretty expensive.
I'd really appreciate any info.

Eldora.

Quite interesting choice for a first USA trip coming all the way from Oz. Couldn't find something of a Bogan equivalent closer to home?

Rentals are expensive here man. I'm sure you could find a deal on Kayak.com or something I'd imagine.

Eldora's a wild party. During the summer this is a hot spot for partying in rural small town Ohio. Rednecks and rural folk from all over the Midwest & Southern US come to some of the bigger races like the World 100.

For all you guys who love AR shootin'- truck driving - fake blonde American bitches, this is your place. Lots of fatties, wrecked bitches, and fucking scrubs too.

Go to Eldora for the World 100 with a travel trailer, enough whiskey, watered down beer and Marlboro Reds to kill off a village and you've got yourself a party and you'll be fucking as many rural American sluts as you want.

Fuck the car rental, this is what you should rockin'

Thanks Designate, I'll try kayak.com
Some of you guys are funny buggers. It's my second trip. I did notice a difference in the campgrounds between Eldora and Indy.
Had a ball though that's why I'm heading back. The USA is nirvana for a rev head like me. The rural Midwest is a interesting place to spend time in. I live close to the city centre of a major city here and while I'm not one of the SJW wankers, I'm not a bogan either.

I was just in Columbus last Saturday. They had done a lot of work on some of the roads. They weren't bad, but made them better. Kudos to the Ohio Department of Transportation. They did a lot of work on interchanges especially, which can be real bottlenecks.

I kind of wish I hadn't left.

Just discovered this thread and it brought a tear to my eye. I went to school in Cowtown 30 plus years ago and can testify to how its changed. I still have family there, so I hear about it all the time. I try to get back to it every other year.
German Village was known as Homo Heights in the late 70's, so not much has changed. The Short North is a shock. It began to go artsy over 20 years ago, prior to that it was Hillbilly Heaven.
Back in my day, you didn't venture far south down High Street unless you wanted to get into a fight in a redneck bar.
One of the most terrifying things I ever saw was a fat hillbilly woman as she pushed a half-dead elder in a wheel chair. This was near Victorian Village before the city cleaned that area up. The Garden District was known for the Garden Theater which was a notorious burlesque dive years ago. Things changed rapidly after the convention center was built around 1980.
Did I hear someone mention Crazy Mama's? Jesus H Christ, do I feel old.

It's been like that during my whole life. Stay away from a bar/restaurant called Plank's in German Village. When you order a pizza there, they bring you some sugary garbage which is basically a pepperoni danish. Rare in Columbus, since Columbus pizza is the real deal.

It was common to see ads in the OSU newspaper for STRAIGHT roommates if you lived near German Village. I don't think you could get by with that now.
The reason it's so pink around OSU can be explained by the student population. Sure it may be 98 percent beer slammers who howl at the football games, but there were/plenty of teh gey who showed up to school, connected with other pink triangles, and decided to stay put. And why not? Like they were going to return to Wooster and take a chance getting beat-up by drunk cowboys.
