Marshall Mathers LP 2- Thoughts?

I got the MMLP2 yesterday, I've listened to it twice and can give a verdict on it now.

Em's flow is at or near its best ever, his flow is practically untouchable.

Content is lacking though and he is no longer as provocative as he was on the original Marshall Mathers LP that this album is influenced by. His subject matter could be more diverse.

Not to give anything away to cats that haven't heard the album yet but he makes references and continuations to a few of his old tracks which prove interesting.

Em picked great featured singers for his background vocals that absolutely destroy their tracks.

Overall a solid album from EM with no real surprises ( It would have been cool if he featured some other rappers on it. Nas comes to mind, as they have never rapped on a track together.)

There is no one as great as Em, except for Lil Wayne who's earlier mix tapes were fkn great.

Em will always be my favorite though. Dude is unreal.

His latest I agree is less controversial, but I think that has to do with him aging and having less to prove to his audience.

I think it's trash to be honest.

Em needs to retire.

EDIT: Actually, trash is too strong. It's better than his last few albums. Still overrated though.

Recovery was a great record, I still listen to it all the time, way different than his earlier stuff but hey, the guy is getting older. Whats the general theme of the record? Recovery was about him making a comeback, thats a big reason why I liked it.

People wanting his old albums will be disappointed. It's excellent for what it is, a 2013 Eminem. He is in my mind the most technically talented rapper ever. It's his best album since The Eminem Show. It's a 'hard' listen though, as a lot of the value is in lyrics that are spat so quickly or in such insane flows, that it takes a few repeats to appreciate them. Whereas, Relapse was an 'easy' listen because of the beats.

I'd like to see some Jezebel feminists pick a fight with him, this album is full of misogyny. I'm not sure how much is in jest either!

Word, I speak for myself when I say this... Its not Eminem who I jam out to and consider to be arguably the best rapper-lyricist to date. Its his alter ego Slim Shady. Slim is the Champ! everything else is respectable with flares of nostalgia that once was. Recovery was just sad, my boy would play tht shit in the whip all the time..listenen to coldwind blows, not afraid, no love, love the way u lie.. while high is a major buzz kill.

We The Real, I think you'll much prefer this to Recovery. After 2 listens through (and repeating a few select songs more) I think it is really a brilliant album. Perhaps his third best after MMLP and Eminem Show.

Good news is that the album has one crucial quality that all of his best work has. It sucks you into his world where he plays some kind of role or portraits some kind of scenario or creates a plot etc. Recovery lacked that as he was in full apologetic almost like asking for forgiveness which doesn't fit him at all.

Lyrically, good news is that on MMLP2 irreverent/surprising/funny Em is back. And better news is that he's in top notch form as MC all throughout the album. You might not like something he says if your a bit sensitive but the delivery is fucking flawless. I haven't noticed any lame/stupid/try hard lyrical moments [beside few chorus moments] that happened a lot on Recovery. Ok so Em is on fire

Musically, Surprisingly there are no Dr. Dre beats [although "So much better" sounds like was standing right behind Em's shoulder when Em was was making it]. Sonically the album is rich and every song is different. There are lots of soft snares except from Alex da Kid who brings his good old knockness with his rather heavy drum based beat ["Asshole"]. Rubin does his good old rock n roll thing on "Berzerk", then surprises completely with "Rhyme on reason" and goes berzerk himself on "So far", WTF track deluxe. Eminem's beats play as a background to his rap where his voice can control them and be #1 star.

Album opener is cool, uncommon beat for Em and even more uncommon is that the song switches at the end to more epic vibe.

The 3rd verse of "Survival" is FIRE and guitar loop does it job well.

Then... drumroll please... "Rap God" is like the biggest fucking show off of Em's skills I ever heard, the more I listen to it the more I love it, it's like Kanye as a douchebag producer had his "Runaway" manifesto on MBDTF album then Eminem as a pure MC has his own lyrical godlike moment ["Be a king, think not - why be a king when you can be a God"].

The "Monster" song with Rihanna is cool. Yes I said it. It's still charged with typical Em's fire and irreverent delivery but this time the collaboration sounds fun and upbeat. As for Rihanna, well, she's just a catchy choruses machine, her vocals guarantee hit record [unsurprisingly Monster is 4th single].

The song with Kendrick Lamar is whack from start to finish and it's good this way cause I can just hit next instead and never look back.

You can light a candle or two when "Headlights" chorus starts, combine "Cleaning out my closet" and "Beautiful" and there you got it ["cause/One thing I never asked was/where the fuck my deadbeat dad was/Fuck it I guess he had trouble keeping up with every address/But I'd have flipped every mattress/ every rock and desert cactus/Own a collection of maps and followed my kids to the edge of the atlas"... damn].

"Stronger Than I Was" has minimal beat where he sings a lot but it's as good as "Hailie's song".

The 2nd verse of "Evil Twin" is hot hot hot, perfect example how Em can create something out of nothing cause the beat is quite repetitive and monotone.

To me 9/10. And that's just by Eminem standards. Cause when we talk hiphop competition then he's totally above and beyond. In fact, with Dre sitting quietly, Jay struggling to record anything decent, Kanye leaving hiphop genre, Drake calling his shit hiphop, and bunch of rappers trying to make a big breakthrough [Pusha T, Lupe] I see no REAL competition at all. We can only hope Nas will step up to celebrate his "Illmatic" anniversary properly.

Sick Review Bro, I am curious how he wanted this to sound like. Magna C, Yeezus to me seemed to have a similar mixing strategy. BUT Em has never been on their side of town in that respect. Intrigued.

Will deff check out Rap God,
I feel like Em is not a show off, just does what gets the job done. this should be good.

Dre? What year is it? I hope you're talking about Andre 3000.

We're going to act like Kendrick didn't murder his verse on the terrible "Love Games"?

Nas doesn't need to step it up, he's actually had a consistent track record and hasn't been releasing garbage albums for the past decade plus. 'Life is Good' was better than this record. Nas can actually deliver coherent thoughts and content other than dick jokes and more of the same stories about his trouble childhood.

You're acting like there's only seven rappers in the world. The Roots, Curren$y, Action Bronson, J. Cole, Ghostface, Talib Kweli, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Joey Bada$$? That's just guys who have dropped projects this year.

It's cool if Em is your favorite but you're just exposing yourself when you can only name 7 rappers as encompassing all of Hip Hop, 5 of whom are in their late 30s and early 40s.

"Love game" is weird. Beat is boring and repetitive overall. They both tried to be funny but they failed. Besides, they rushed through this track like they had had one take to record the whole song. Kendrick's verse is never ending blablablablablablabla like he rapped his whole verse on one breath, his chorus is lame and the only few good moments in the whole song start at 4 minute mark (Em's verse). Kendrick murdering him comment made my day LOL [Image: amuse.gif]

He steps up with every album so that's why he's able to be consistent. That's how winners stay on top by stepping up. It's the competition that gets them going. You really think that he overlooks Em as a MC? Even Rakim knows very well that Em is top notch.

They're fine except the fact that they're not in Nas/Em/Jay/Dre/TI/Snoop/Kanye success/influence/status/power bracket yet. When I say competition I mean guys in the that league. Ghost is past his prime. I dig Lupe music but he's not in Snoop league, same with Roots vs Dr. Dre or Nas vs Talib, not the same success status. That's how I see it. And young cats like Tyler or J.Cole have yet to prove things or two and comparing them to established highly successful veterans is inappropriate IMO.

It's not just about beats and lyrics. It's called music INDUSTRY for a reason. Pusha might be a legend in his own bubble but he's not the type of figure yet that has huge buzz around his upcoming projects.

Get it?

I know very well Em is labelled as a clown and he deserved this by recording lots of ridiculous and absurd tracks. The whole trick is that he CAN do it because of his skills. So far no legit rapper had balls to diss his goofy ass and that's pretty much obvious why.
