I am done with Shaving Cream

Shaving with a double edged safety razor is far surperior to using a typical 3-blade or 5-blade cartridge razor.

As is using a old fashioned shaving creams and shaving soaps.

Also much cheaper...replacing Mach 3 cartridges and Fusion pro glide cartridges is extremely expensive...replacing double edged blades cost a couple cents each and the shave is 100X better.

I used to shave with the razors and shaving creams that are advertised today and you see on TV etc. and I always had the worst razor burn and irritation. I tried milder creams, even soap, no soap, basically everything, still would hack the shit out of my face - I've got sensitive skin and a thick wiry beard, where the hairs don't like being cut easily - I'm sure some of you are the same.

Another thing you should be using (if you have sensitive skin) is a Badger or Boar shaving brush and a some real shaving soap. That stuff your grandpa used to use.

Nothing opens up your pores and softens your whiskers (thus preparing them to be cut more easily) like face-lathering with a brush and cream/soap pre-shave. Everyone who likes being clean shaven owes themselves a taste of this kind of shaving.

I no longer shave as I've grown a beard and keep it trimmed, but back when I was a teenager and was first learning to shave, using DE Safety Razors, high quality blades, a badger/board brush, and a high quality cream/soap really changed the health of my face/skin.

Here is an awesome forum where I learned a lot about old-school shaving:

Here is a quality razor that a lot of guys use when they're easing their way into DE shaving.

http://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-De89l...fety+razor

These are my favorite blades, as they are by far the sharpest, and when used with care (and a good lather), can provide you with baby-soft skin. You may want to try another blade if you want these too sharp initially.

Here is one of my favorite shaving creams...comfortable (miles above any conventional canned 'gook', and the scent is incredible:

http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Old-Bond-St...ond+street

Awesome shaving soap:

http://www.amazon.com/Pre-Provence-Mens-...aving+soap

Here's a soap that you can use on the go, when you travel etc. You just wet it, rub it on your face, and then proceed to lather with a brush (that has been sitting in hot water for a few minutes. These guys can produce the same lather as regular shave soap:

I cannot shave raw. My dad uses baby oil as a lubricant for shaving but I HATE the smell of it. So I substituted it with extra virgin olive oil. Just a few drops and it moisturized my entire face while allowing me to shave my facial hair.

1) Come out of hot shower.

2) Dab your fingertips with a few drops of EVOO and massage it into your facial hair.

3) Splash some hot water on your face and you should notice there is some oily residue on your hands.

4) Rub that all over the rest of your face to moisturize it.

5) Shave like you normally do.

6) Finish off with a splash of cold water and PAT your face dry.

I'm never going back to shaving cream. TRY IT!

I can confirm the no shave cream method.

I shave with double edged safety razor, just use water for lube. One pass along the grain, one pass against the grain. Less nicks, painless, really close shave.

I use Skintimate Gel, which is what women use to shave their legs. I get an incredibly close shave and never get razor burn. Skintimate does not contain SLS.

To shave I use a Gilette ProGlide Power.

I'm not sure why I don't get the dry skin issue that other guys have.

So over $100 worth of shit just to get a shave? I admit though, I am intrigued by the double edge blade idea

YOu just need a basic kit to get started, then after it pays for itself because you won't have to continue to spend $15 for 6 cartridges. YOu can get 50ct Feather razor blades which are the best on the market, you really don't need those, for $14.

I got my basic shave set for $27 which came with soap, brush, and a stand for the razor and brush.

Safety razor was like $33, and it's nice and heavy stainless steel.

Razors are dirt cheap and you can stockpile them, they don't take up much space.

Just skip shaving all together and just use a beard trimmer. You can get a $20 one that runs on AA batteries. No skin problems at all from that, look more masculine. For guys with sensitive hairy faces, it's pretty much the only solution, because your hair grows back in 10 hours and you have sandpaper face again anyway.

I look 5 years younger when I'm shaved vs. 1 days growth so I will stick with the razor idea. I tend to shave in the afternoon, evening since I'm more inclined to socialize then.

Don't need any help looking more masculine, as I have a very angular face, i.e. the jaw, chin, cheekbones, etc. For guys with a rounder face the day stubble is probably a good idea. Some guys look great.

Tried this out the other day when I coincidentally ran out of shaving cream. It was very slow going and I thought for sure that I was going to cut myself, but I managed not to. No need to buy more now.

Thanks bacon!

Exactly. It's cheap in the long-run because you do not need to keep buying expensive cartridges.

DE razors are dirt cheap.

Only shave this way if you enjoy shaving...it takes longer and requires focus (you can cut yourself badly if you're not careful),

but the result is a smoother less irritated face..and it's manly as hell.

How will plain old water/double edged razors work on my head? I was going to buy balding clippers but I like the cueball look and I'm not sure they would take off enough hair.

Stripper tip, no shaving cream but hair conditioner. My buddy, who turned into the smoothest casual talker around strippers, but would freeze up around girls with clothes on, asks a stripper this mid lap dance. She proceeded to discuss her vag shaving routine and confirmed it with other girls that walked by.

I haven't used shaving cream in my life. I used an electric shaver until 22, at which point I began experiment with beard styles, eventually settling on a short, but full beard. Every week or two or use a beard trimmer to shorten it and even it out.

I switched to shaving soap and brush in the early to mid 90's, and have been shaving that way ever since. My shaving sets take either Gillette Sensor or Mach 3 blades, but I also returned to using safety razors as much as possible. After a hot shower, I apply pre-shave oil (baby oil if I'm out of pre-shave), then lather up. I rinse off with ice cold water to close the pores, then apply TendSkin to ward off ingrown hairs. I chase that with Lucky Tiger after shave/tonic, which has Aloe, Calendula and Chamomile. I shave only twice a week...sometimes a third time to cut down on skin irritation.

I agree 100%. Double-edged safety razors are the way to go. I use a Merkur. Here's a post I wrote about shaving properly over at ROK:

I recommend Feather Blades for your safety razor. Sharpest I have ever used.

OP's problem was using some cheap aerosol. That's not shaving cream, that's garbage. Double edged safety razor (Merkur HD), badger brush and real shaving soap all the way.
