TLP is back with an article about masculinity in the US

As usual it's a long, rambling essay with lots of interesting side points, but the TL;DR is:

The subject is a Guinness ad. Specifically, that it's a feminized aspirational message targeted at beta males. It shows a bunch of male stereotypes playing wheelchair basketball with one of their friends who has to use a wheelchair. And betas and girls like this ad because it makes them feel good.

What is a beta male? He is the kind of man who anxiously looks for something to identify him as a man, while doing nothing to become a man. For him, there's Guinness.

Get ready for a super-sexist comment that is nevertheless 100% true, good thing my rum makes me impervious to your idiotic criticisms: reducing yourself because you think it's a show of solidarity is a straight up chick thing to do, see also Slut Walks and crying excessively for the deceased. It was super-brave that Kellie Pickler shaved her head to support her friend with breast cancer, but what the hell was the point? "Breast cancer awareness!" Isn't that what the implants are for?

He also brings up an alternate commercial where a cute woman stuck in the rain steals a few seconds of umbrella time from a number of men passing by. Points out how this makes betas angry but also points out the conundrum where none of the men think to offer to walk her to her car (take the chance to run some elderly game on her) nor does it even occur to the woman that they could (or should).

"Well, feminism has emasculated men." Really? A girl did that to you?

As usual his critiques aren't air-tight but still insightful and thought-provoking.

The idea of a woman stealing a few seconds of umbrella from a bunch of men (who are presumably either too scared to try anything or too callous to care) without making a longer connection to any of them is a very interesting metaphor.
