Whistler BC - Crankworx

Whistler BC - Crankworx

Whistler BC

Whistler is located in the Canadian Province of British Columbia. Renowned for its world-class ski hills and mountain trails, if you’re appreciative of that sort of thing, this is the spot you’d want to see at least once in your life.

Disclaimer: My experience is a summer long weekend getaway during the Crankworx mountain bike festival therefore I can’t comment on the ski and snowboard quality, although it has been rated as the best ski hill in the world by National Geographic, Ask Men, and various ski magazines.

Getting there: Around 2 hours north of Vancouver if you travel by plane. I took a long windy mountain road from an adjacent prairie province. Possibly the best drive I have ever taken, the roads are long, windy, dangerous, and the views are incredible. I’ve driven through the Swiss Alps, Italy, France, and the Balkans, none come close to what this drive has to offer in terms of pure, unadulterated Gran Tourismo esque inspired mountain drive fun. If you’re travelling during the winter, don’t bother, most of the mountain roads will be closed, or simply too dangerous to drive on. There are several parts where the road becomes very patchy, bumpy, and tight. Expect to drive on this mountain road for around 50-70 kilometers without shoulders. There are patches of pure gravel.

This is an example of what to expect (not my pictures)

Before you get there: Book a hotel well in advance, preferably several months in advance if you’re coming during Crankworx or peak winter months. Most hotels will be fully booked. We had booked our hotel in December 2012 for the Crankworx last weekend (August 16-19th)

Since it’s a tourist centred town, most hotels you choose should be of good quality. I won’t say which Hotel I went to but it’s a popular global chain. Disclaimer: Remember to always check beneath the bedsheet corners for bedbugs at any international hotel in places like this. Even quality hotels can have little critters that you can take home.

Once you get there:
Depending on the time of the year you’re going, whether summer season or winter, the crowds will vary. During the Crankworx there is a high concentration of young males, the ratio was slightly unfavourable. The general demographic was anywhere between 19 to early 30s, mostly white, punk rocker, mountain biking types. Usually from the US west coast. During the winter expect to see a slightly more balanced ratio. There weren’t too many couples and approaching should be fairly easy on the small Whistler Village streets.

Like most mountain and resort towns in Canada (Whistler, Blue Mountain, Banff, Jasper), expect to see most of the hotels clustered around a main strip that acts as a central anchor of the area. A few hotels will be slightly further away. Make sure you pick a hotel within walking distance of this strip. It is where the shopping areas are, and most importantly, bars and clubs.

During the day:
If you own a mountain bike and you come during the summer or Crankworx, this is for you. Take the Gondola to the top of the mountains and bike your way down some of the most daunting and dangerous bike trails you will ride on, ever. The view is gorgeous, the potential for injury high, the fun factor: fucking excessive. The Gondola on top of the mountains also has glaciers and you can see them up close if you’re into nature. Don’t get drunk or excessively high if you’re going to take the Gondola up, they may not let you on, or worse, you might hurt yourself if you’re biking down the trail. Don’t hotbox the gondola; they’ll kick you off the first stop (it takes 3 stops to get to the very top of the mountain).

Bungee jumping: This is self-explanatory. If you don’t tie a rope around your torso and hurl yourself off a bridge into the most amazing and pristine valley nature can birth, you’re not doing it properly.

Zip lining: This is the most amazing zip lining you will ever do. I had a bad back from bad form and other various activities, and was hung over to the point of passing out, but once the fresh air hits you and your body speeds down that cable, if you’re atheist you’ll start believing in Buddha and if you believe in Allah you’ll embrace Shiva.

The Nightlife/Women
I started by pre-drinking with a few people at the hotel bar. It was full to capacity minutes after our arrival around 7pm. If you’re in Whistler and you’re going to game, this is can be make or break of your night. It’s early enough your interesting guy/cocky/funny whatever game you have might work. After the bar starts clearing out more around 12am, shit gets too sloppy.

Then it was time for a club. Most clubs are located on the same strip as the hotels, restaurants, bars and stores. It was approximately a 3-5 minute walk from my hotel to the club I went to on night 1. Maxxfish. The club is located in a basement. I arrived at 10pm, and there was no line. However as I was taking money out of the ATM located on the ground floor, I noticed a large crowd quickly accumulating outside the main entrance behind the ropes. Most clubs already had massive lines.

I was with a mixed group and shackled for this particular weekend, therefore the whole solo approach or two-man crew I’m used to in the city went out the window. Regardless, the crowd was unique. Due to Crankworx, the demographic was primarily 19 early 30s, white, and high testosterone. The ratio at Maxxfish on this particular night was slightly unfavourable, and the majority of people there seemed to be in groups of 3 or more. There were plenty of male/female mixed groups. I can’t say whether these groups arrived to Whistler together or if they formed during the Crankworx/Daily activates.

The women were friendly and easily approachable, and you can be welcomed into the group. Expect people to randomly buy you drinks if you’re waiting in line to buy your own. Return the favour or pass it on. There were still large groups of women, and they were open to be talked to. This is drunken high-energy game; your interesting life experiences don’t mean fuck all at 12am at Maxxfish, Whistler BC. Get wasted, have fun, and hook up. If you have half descent drunk nightclub game you shouldn’t have particularly hard time. Hopefully you started early (hotel bar) I wouldn’t wait until 1am to approach. 1am you should be snogging a broad on a pillar by the dance floor.

I won’t write out how night 2 went, as it is a bit too personal for the forum. But you get the gist of what to expect during the summer/Crankworx Whistler BC night scene on an average night.

Daygame in Whistler BC should come off generally easier than regular city game. It won’t be quite as easy as Cancun/Cuba/Dominican resort game, but nevertheless there are plenty of girls walking around in groups of 2 and up to approach. Assume they’re tourists, and DTF.

The majority of women who work in the service sectors there are from Australia and New Zealand on their 2-year visas. If you’re into that sort of woman this should be a good place to look.

Other places similar but less epic than Whistler BC in Canada are Banff and Jasper, both located in Alberta. They are better in the winter than summer. Blue Mountain in Ontario. Nowhere near as well as the aforementioned resorts but great if you live in the Greater Toronto Area.

Trip Checklist:

Pre-booked hotel
Bike for summer/Skis for winter (or snowboard, which unfortunately isn’t up my alley)
If you’re coming from outside Canada, rent a car and zip around the mountain roads
At least $300 per day to spend on daily activities and food, if you plan to game women all day you might get bored quickly
Physically able to keep up

Keep in mind many Canadians at these places drink excessively regardless of age; last call is at 1:45am.
