Just curious. How come Shayne Ward's career spluttered out?

He seemed to be the most accomplished singer and performer to win The X Factor (back in 2005). And his debut single went to number one and was the third fastest selling single of all time.
I was convinced he would be pushed as the British Justin Timberlake. But it never happened. It is weird since I remember Simon Cowell saying his performance in the final was the best he had ever seen.
Maybe Simon Cowell only sees the potential for mega-stardom in the females and not the male singers?
Anyway - just want to see if any other Britis think it is strange the way Shayne Ward's career never took off?
I know it is a random question. But it has bugged me for years. Even though I never watch The X Factor anymore. Or any other TV for that matter.
