Shopping is a loop of loneliness

People shop when sad.

Shopping makes them sadder.

They shop more.

Yay capitalism?

We all know women shop more than men.

Sad shopper Game?

I shop when I need stuff like groceries, should I get a prescription for depression now?

Shopping is a loop of loneliness

Shopping gives a pleasant emotional high, sort of like eating a delicious piece of cake. Then you come down from that high are in the same boat as before.

Even spending time on Twitter and Facebook can duplicate such a high when your status update or tweet gets responses and likes. To keep those going, you have to keep Tweeting.

Productive hobbies and work seem to be the only things that keep men level and focused. But instead society urges consumerism and validation seeking. Depression and malaise result.

3 years of no shopping (apart from food) and now I'm semi-retired.

Ask yourself if you really need that DVD/pair of $200 trainers/$100 t shirt.

Agree. The difference in emotional value between purchasing things and creating things is like the difference between eating empty-calorie junk food or a balanced, nutritious meal.

As always, value depends upon effort.
