You have been offered a job at a remote research facility.

The facility is very remote and apart from your facility no signs of human life exist within 1000km. Its is inland and only accessible by a runway.

The job consists of monitoring some equipment, making occasional repairs and sending reports back to home base. It is not particularly physically or mentally challenging however the tasks are spread out throughout the day and have to be completed when needed. You can leave the facility but cannot go too far incase you miss completing a task.

The facility itself its not huge but has everything you could need. You have a sleeping quarter, bathroom, gym, cooking area, TV, living area and full internet access. Supplies like food are delivered via airdrop every two weeks. You can request whatever ingredients you like but you have to cook for yourself.

You can also request items like books, DVDs, tools, clothing etc. Nothing too big or expensive though. These items will be included in your airdrops.

You live alone at the facility but can contact people by phone or internet as much as you please. Once you are dropped off by plane you will not make human contact again till your job is completed.

In your free time you can whatever you want (write a book, work out, learn spanish, run an online business etc.) as long as it does not interfere with running the facility.

Unless of an emergency you cannot leave and noone is allowed visit.

The job is for 4 years and pays two million US dollars (no tax).

Could you describe the surroundings more? Something exotic like tropical rainforest or with things like cliff faces/valleys/mountains/caves to explore during downtime? I've spent extended time by myself trekking in the wilderness in Oregon & Washington, have rudimentary cooking skills and assuming some basic medical supplies were available, I'd consider it.

4 years is a long time though. Tough question. For me, the above consideration would likely sway my decision.

Edit: OK, I saw this:

That is harsh, you're effectively confined to that place, and due to the continuous nature of the work you can't risk going off-site for very long. There may be potential to reinvent yourself Count of Monte Christo-style for your return to society, but I'd probably say no.

Is this a college paradigm? For a college where there is no partying and sex, only studying, but at the end you're guaranteed a job? (i. e. the exact opposite of colleges today).

It's the 4 year limit that gets to me... why that number?

Yikes. the question for me would be how can I get enough social interaction to stay sane.

I'd be able to keep myself occupied otherwise - learning languages, reading, working out... it's just the interaction. Not sure I could do four years, even with things like Skype etc.

A PhD is basically 4-5 years of isolation, except you get no money in the end and the work is way harder. Yet people sign up for a PhD in droves (and not all of them are stupid).

Men used to do crap like this (living out in the wilderness for years) before the internet, or skype, or supply airdrops. Imagine an alpha male figure complaining that he didn't get enough social interaction when he was living out in the wilderness.

It's not just a good deal. It's a freaking amazing deal, and there are many people who would gladly sign up if you're not willing to do it.

Yes, absolutely, I'd take it.

Four years of my life is currently worth 2 million USD.

The isolation would be tough, for a social guy like me, but I'm pretty good at finding ways to entertain myself when there is no one around.

Heck, after four years of not needing to put up with stupid people, I might wanna stick around for a second contract.

If I did wanna leave after four years, I'd buy a sailboat and float around the globe until that got boring. And I'd party like a ************.

I'd pass on it. Isolation does weird things to you.

And while the thought of having all of that communication at your disposal, i wouldn't really reach out to people. I tend to be come a loaner on my own and get lost in my thoughts.

I like social interaction. But I like new social interaction with new people.
