Back in 2009, a black gentleman by the name of Roderick Scott ended up having to shoot one white 17-year-old Christopher Cervini.
They charged Scott with manslaughter and put him on trial. The jury found him not guilty and Scott walked.
Just like with George Zimmerman, the justice system worked. Someone felt they had to kill someone for self defense, and the court system agreed (or, at least, couldn't find "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" that murder or manslaughter was committed).

My opinion: I think it's unfortunate the story of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman became a story about the races of the people involved.
