Venezuela, More Deadly Than Iraq?

Pretty crazy article I just read in the Times. I'm sure it's not as bad as they're saying, is it?

Caracass has 200 homicides for every 100000 people! That's insane! That's nearly 6-7x more than Rio De Janeiro almost twice that of the highest homicide rate of any city in Brazil.

When I was in Caracas the only problems I had was the police stopping me on the street, planting drugs on me and demanding a bribe.

Apart from that I was fine.

lol@ your nonchalant demeanor about it. How much did they take from you?

I remember my uncle told me the cops in Rio drove him in circles for 2 hours because they didn't believe he was out of money (which he was), then they beat his ass.

Precisely?

Exactly $0.00

I talked my way out of it.

I looked upon it as a good exercise to practice my Spanish at the time.

It took 40 mins of conversation in Spanish, them handcuffing me, threatening to beat me, threatening me with Venezuelan prison etc before they realised that it would be better not to fuck with me and to let me go...

Which is exactly what they did

I had some guests come into my hotel the last couple of nights from Venezuela. I told them we needed to hold $30 on their credit cards and that we would refund them the money after they checked out. They rufused and said they could only put down a cash deposit. They told us that if we were to try and refund money back to their Venezuelan credit cards, the money would never make it back in their accounts.
