Legendary professional wrestling announcer "Mean" Gene Okerlund died at the age of 76, the WWE announced Wednesday.

Okerlund, who was dubbed "Mean" Gene by World Wrestling Federation wrestler and announcer Jesse "The Body" Ventura, rose to prominence as the voice of the WWF during the wrestling boom of the 1980s.

"A voice and sound track to an entire era of our industry," wrestling star and current WWE Executive Vice President Triple H tweeted. "He was the star of some of @WWE's most memorable segments. "Mean Gene" was beloved by all who got to work with him."

Okerlund is most well-known for his backstage and in-ring interviews with stars like Ventura, Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Hogan's "Well, you know something 'Mean' Gene ..." response to a lot of Okerlund's questions became a catch phrase for wrestling fans.

Okerlund left the WWF in 1993 and signed with rival promotion World Championship Wrestling. Okerlund returned to the WWF in 2001 and eventually signed a lifetime contract with the organization.

Okerlund, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006, made his last appearance on WWE TV on the 25th Anniversary of WWE Raw in January 2018.

"A happy man is a happy everybody else in his life."

"Ladies if you want to make your man happy, think about what makes you happy and do exactly the opposite."

"Hey how you doin' and I hope you know that I'm an upgrade for your stupid daughter." - Patrice O'Neal

Quite possibly the most significant interview in world history was conducted by Mean Gene and the Macho Man Randy Savage.

Are they gonna bury him face down? So that his critics can kiss his ass?

Somehow, Mean Gene always kept a straight face during those interviews. He was perfect.

I'll raise you your Macho Man promo with Cocaine Macho. Although you could say Macho was coked up every promo.

But RIP Mean Gene.

What a blast from the past. I don't think I've heard that name in 30 years, but it's etched into my brain.
Used to watch him on WWF all the time when I was a kid in the 80s. He was the ultimate straight man to the comedic craziness of that golden age of professional wrestling.

Sad news, WWF was a large part of my childhood in the 80s.
