I went to the same tailor in Beverly Hills this past Tuesday. I experienced the same type of deal that dvy had: multiple people coming through, prices being way higher than I've encountered in HK and Seoul, Indian dudes speaking Hindi to each other about pricing and what not...

Shirts were relatively expensive $65 each, but the suits (if what they say is true) are extremely cheap for fully canvassed bespoke (not made to measure) suits. Super 160's started at $550, but I usually don't go that high because I'm not an old man.

Like DVY, I decided to pass, but told him I'd look him up in HK when I'm there in a month. Have to do some more research, but in the meantime, I set up an appointment with Black Lapel in NYC next weekend. The suits seem right up my alley and they're upfront about being made in shanghai (preferable to any other Chinese location) and made to measure.

If they are telling you that they can produce a fully canvassed bespoke suit for $550 with only one fitting they are lying. The process involves several measurement/fitting meetings and costs a couple grand at a minimum. What they actually offer is MTM if it isn't an outright scam.

Read this article to get an approximation of prices. Keep in mind the article is 5 years old.

I will have to write a primer to men's fashion in the near future.

I know of people whose families have business of visiting US clients and stitching suits in HK - they've been doing it for decades.

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

If I was a reputable tailor going for a personal, long-term relationship I would take the half now, half later arrangement. Whats the big deal? If I like it, odds are I will become a life-long customer, which is when Ill pay upfront.

Don't you think his behavior was odd?

Don't ever pay upfront for services like this. You are asking to be hustled. When you give all the money, you lose control.

WIA- For most of men, our time being masters of our own fate, kings in our own castles is short. Even those of us in the game will eventually succumb to ease of servitude rather than deal with the malaise of solitude

good advice, especially when you are paying cash. when paying credit on these types of deals you can always dispute the charges. once the cash is gone so is your leverage
