My Aguascalientes Feria de San Marcos data sheet, Mexico.

My Aguascalientes Feria de San Marcos data sheet, Mexico.

The San Marcos Fair in Aguascalientes Mexico runs for 3 weeks every year. This year it goes on from April 19 up to May 12.

I had been to Aguascalientes before, this was my first time at the fair and it exceeded my expectations.

The fair grounds is a section of the city that is closed off and only accessible by foot. And its HUGE, around 4 kilometers long, including side streets and corridors. And all of that was filled to the brim with people drinking and dancing. Check the attached pictures. Full capacity. I was there Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it was on every day. Friends had told me it was like that but I had to see it to believe it.

About Aguascalientes itself.

Aguascalientes is the capital of its namesake state, in the Bajío region of south-central Mexico. Its a small state, but economically capable, and a hub for trade and commerce in the region. The city is in a current boom, and I saw a lot of new real state developments since I was last there. It reminds me of a lot of american cities in that it has a "central" downtown area, and the suburbs are located in the outskirts, so its not a walkable city, you will need to rent a car or depend on the public transport, which is taxis, buses, and "combis" which are vans that pack up to 12 people at a time and carry them to specific neighbourhoods from a central hub. (tough one can get in or out at any point during the ride)

The downtown centro has some interesting colonial and novohispanic architecture, but thats it.

About the fair.

Its wild, but not Mardi Gras wild. Theres just a sea of people out there drinking in the streets (supposedly its not allowed normaly, but I guess that police just leave it be)

The fair grounds consist of a number of street blocks that are closed of to transit and for pedestrians only during fair times, theres a huge plaza de toros bullfighting ring, a couple of shopping malls (closed at night but not their parking lots) restaurant, stores, ONE casino, a cockfighting arena (which I wisely stayed away of, since I have a tendency of losing my money at them), restaurants, bars, clubs, and a special area of just clubs called "zona de antros" that has is own access rules.

When to go.

At any time during the fair. At other times, Aguascalientes is a cool city but you might find it a bit sleepy if you dont have anything specific to do there. Fair runs from april 19 to may 12 this year, so you might still make it. Im trying to get there again the last weekend, so drop me a line if you want to discuss logistics. Theres a cheap bus line going there from Mexico City for $350 pesos round trip (Its a 6 hour ride each way).

Where to stay.

Getting a room might be hard. Even cheap motels get booked and charge overprices, so plan ahead. One option could be to stay in a nearby town and shuttle by bus from there in the afternoon and back again in the morning when the party dies down. I stayed at a friends place, which was way out in the outskirts on the highway to Zacatecas. Getting there was a half hour combi ride from downtown, or a $100 pesos taxi ride. If you cant get a room, try couchsurfing. People there tend to be welcoming and hospitalarian. Or look online for a rental apartment for the week. My friend told me that they once rented a pad right across the street for around $1000 a night, that averaged at $200 per dude for a sweet place to crash and take girl back to.

Where to eat.

I really didnt experiment much in this segment, as I fell ill a few weeks back at Mexico City with some kind of super powered stomach flu and didnt wanted to take risks. What typical there is lechón, wich is shredded pork stewed in its own fat. Tastier than it sounds. Try a lechon torta with everything, there are stands all over the place.

Comedero San Pancho, inside fair grounds. This a "traditional mexican" place, which means its just a corporate franchise spot with little salsa molcajetes and sarapes decor. Good food, but annoying ambience with loud music, loud drunken asses, and a fat mariachi singing lady that tried too hard to be funny. We ordered a mixed parrillada grilled meats plate, and couldnt finish it all between the four of us. Tab ran at $750 with drinks and beer.

El Carnes, outside fair grounds, cant remember exact location. Opens 24 hours (or at least it was open when we got there at 6 am on saturday morning). A steak, taco and burguer place. Food was incredible after a long night out, and they have a huge condiment and salad bar. Try the agua de horchata drink.

McDonalds. Nah, just kidding. I did had a Subway sub at Altaria the day I got there while waiting for my friend.

Where to party.

A lot of options here. Easiest (and cheapest) would be to just buy a six pack and set post in the street. A lot of bands play there for tips, so dancing circles just pop up. However, quelity of talent in the street is lacking. If you do find any hot girls, most probably they will be on their way to somewhere. Jst walk around though, its worth a look. You will see a lot of shit going down, and its funny to see somone pouring himself a drink or getting a beer from his cooler while the cops next to him just look bored.

Serenissima, at the main street. Cool place, played mexican 80s pop hits and old hits. Good talent, altough the hottest there where acting a bit stuck up. They comped us a round of Jager and Red Bull shots, which was a nice way of starting out that night.

Zona de Antros, or club area.

This is the main area for clubs, its a walled off section of the fair, they have special access rules, like checking for ID (though they might overlook this if you dont look too young) and make you throw away any drink you might have before going in. There are also police patrol cars parked at every entrance. Safety there is tighter, altough that could have been altogether unnecesary, I didnt saw any fight in my time there, just a couple drunken fightpickers that where promptly taken away. Its also less packed than the regular streets, so you can walk freely and approach with less distractions.

The Zona de Antros square. This is a little plaza around which the clubs are built. There is no alcohol being sold there, but if you take some out of a club you can drink it, they will make you leave the glass and give you a plastic cup to pour it in. I found it extremely easy to approach girls here. Just walk up to them and go direct. Chick go crazy for this, you can actualy see them tremble with excitement, or giggle nervously. The pictures are from girls approached there, the quality of the talent outside on the street is sub-par compared to those, you could find some decent girls, but would have to dig deeper. My main openers for the night where "Hey, Im really liking your style, I had to come over and get to know you" and "Ola k ase". Ola k ase worked like a charm.

Velvet. This was our main spot. Top 40 hits and latin pop. The guys I was with knew the crew there and we skipped the line and got right in without paying the cover charge, which was $200 pesos the first night we where there and $500 on Saturday. (However, I saw that later on they got it down to $300) The talent here was incredible. We didnt got a table as we wanted to remain mobile, If you do, try to get one near the dance floor, as my friend told me that "everybody that was somebody in Aguascalientes" was there. Girls where gameable, but not very open as I will explain later. Try the balcony upstairs, I found it easier to game there, and clicked with a fantastic hottie from Guadalajara there. This place (as where the others) would have definitely been "G approved" as they let you light up your smokes inside, and the waiters would even get you an ashtray. I dont smoke anymore, so its not something I care about.

RPM, pop hits and outdated hip hop hits. Also got in without paying cover charge. Status of the place was a bit lower so the talent was too, but still good. The crown was also a bit older (around 24-30) than Velvet (18-22) Approaching was easier here, and the vibe was a bit more wild and hot. Here I approached a few times with good results, clicked with a thin petite 30 y.o. that said it was her birthday and that she wanted to "celebrate" it. Got her number and told her I was gong to call her later to hang out, but my logistics where fucked so I got nowhere. Messaged her on Sunday but she replied later as I was leaving town. One of the guys commented that the place was "libertine" because we saw a few couples making out or grinding at the dance floor.

(About this. Society in Aguascalientes seemed to me a bit closed minded and keeping themselves to closed groups. Its not that they are super religious or small town minded, I think it just a cultural thing. In approaching, you have to be a bit more laid back and play it cool, play the whole group and gain influence over their friends, and then isolate her so you can close the deal discretely. Its not that they wont put out, its just that they wont be as willing to do it in front of their friends. Logistics will be crucial here. Thats the reason I think it was easier to approach them on the plaza, as there they where on their way in or out and outside their social circles. The one girl that I flat out asked "want to come back to my place right now?" refused, but wasnt offended or mad at my request.)

Moka. Latin pop rock. We got here late so the place was dying, but I iked it from what we saw. The place is basically a big terrace that overlooks the plaza, nice decor, and the talent was nice so I can only imagine what it must have been earlier. Got eyefucked by an "alternative" brunette just as we where leaving, but she was grinding between two dudes, so I just let that one slip.

There where two other places worth a look that we didnt visited whose names I cant remember, one by the corner with a huge flight of stairs. the guys couldnt get them to comp us the cover charges so we didnt go in, and another right next to it with an enormous statue of Kali by th entrance. Couldnt tell what was it like, but judging by the decor I would guess that the place must have been over the top.

The Casino. Roulette, baccarat, and good ol´ bingo tables. We didnt gambled, but heres a funny story. One of the guys ran out of cash, so we went looking for an ATM, and the one we found had a huge line, so he had the idea to go into the casino, buy some chips with his credit card, and then cash them in. We found out that the casino is a cash only affair. One can only wonder about the amount of money they must be laundering there everynight.

The girls. Women from the Bajío region set the standard for mexican beauty. In Aguascalientes, they tend to be thin(ish) fair skinned, with long black hair. A perfect tribute to their spanish roots. I also saw a lot of big asses with thin waists, but I didnt found that to be the norm. Also they are not as tall as the northern mexico gals from Nuevo Leon or Chihuahua, but not as short as the one from Morelia or Oaxaca. Just lovely. Another thing to keep in mind, is that most of the cities in the Bajio are close by, so many girls at the fair will be there for the night from Guadalajara, Queretaro, or León. Variety, as with all mexican women, is the norm. You can find girls of every flavor, from strawberry blondes to dark mestizo brunettes. Blacks is the segment where Mexico is lacking, but keep an eye out, I saw a couple there.

Another thing to have in mind: the tagline for the San Marcos fair is "la fiesta de México" or Mexico´s party. This seemed true as I saw very very few foreign tourists there, so play that to your advantage if you come from elsewhere.

Couple other places:

Altaria. A nice shopping mall by the second ring outside downtown. Nothing impressive, just a few higher endish stores, a cineplex, and some restaurants, including an argentinian bife place I didnt had a chance to try out. The talent here was incredible, as should be for the higher end places in every city.

Calvillo. A small sleepy "magical town" about a 100 kilometers outside Aguas. The main product is guava fruit, something that they seem to take pride in. My friend took me there on Sunday. The town has a reputation for beautiful girls, and I wasnt disappointed. Cute, petite blondes, the place was like a slice out of europe. Nothing to write about here. Girls had a small town mentality and walked or looked away as we went close. The ones we saw by themselves in the streets where either too young, teen young, or young and married, carrying around kids in strollers. I guess there musnt be much to do there for a woman but marry young and pop out kids by the dozen. Perhaps if I as looking for a wife that would be a good place to look. We had some "traditional pizza" (?) the traditional guava ice cream (which was amazing, with some guava jam on top) and bought a couple of bottles of guava liquor thats very sweet but packs a punch. Im planning on some exotic cocktails for when I have some girls over.

I liked her the most. She was just too cute being super excited and giggly that I approached her. Elementary school teacher. That old piece of hardware in her hand is my Nokia 3200 phone.

I was in GDL and met some people who came back from there. I always wanted to go. +1 from me.

Aguascalientes is a good place to visit, although I never made it to the Feria de San Marcos itself, which is a shame because I've heard wonders about it. Even though the people of Aguascalientes, or hidrocalidos as we call them, are generally speaking very nice and friendly, it's true that they're not as open minded as the people from Mexico City or the bigger cities, it's a somewhat conservative city. Girls tend to be attractive, they look a lot like tapatias.

I would only add that if you go to Aguascalientes, for touristic purposes it'd be worth it to visit the city of Zacatecas, it's an hour away, is smaller although it's one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico.

I sencond what you said. I love Zacatecas. My family is from there and I enjoyed going every year since I was born in the states. I love the girls and the city is very nice. Very colonial and it has a very Mexican feel to it and is considered to be one of the most Mexican cities in the country. I love Aguascalientes also.

You guys should also try to hit "Sabado de Gloria" during march. Its a huge party in the city of Jerez, Zacatecas. Lots of girls and lots of booze. Here are some clips:

Planning to head there in late Feb. That's spring break time in the US so will that affect my visit?

what about close beach cities?

Id say the closest beach would be Puerto Vallarta via Guadalajara.

My experience of Vallarta during spring break was that it was full of drunk rednecks in "one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor" t-shirts and flip flops at the club. Not my type of people, not my type of party.

That said, spring break is not a mexican holiday, so life will go on as usual outside tourist towns like Vallarta or Cancún.

My cousin grew up in Aguascalientes. In her words: besides the fair, there is little to nothing to see. She says the city´s nickname is "Aguarranch" (rancho, farm) because there is nothing fun to do.

I traveled there often for work and family. I went to my cousin´s graduation party (Tec de Monterrey, Campus Aguascalientes) and I must confess my jaw dropped to the floor by witnessing the talent (On par or exceeding Guadalajara´s finest). Fair skinned girls with very European characteristics, accompanied by very mexican curvy bodies.

Social circle game is king, similar to Guadalajara, Jalisco.

My friend in Aguascalientes uses cold approaching as means of expanding existing social circles and gets laid exclusively through social circles.

I can imagine, because Aguascalientes girls are not exactly that "traditional" but are very careful about how they appear or what is told about them (their "reputation").

"Pueblo chico, infierno grande". (Small town, big hell)

BTW, I think nowadays Monterrey also requires social circle game to do well. I went there for a week and the nightlife seems very group oriented, extremely loud places that make approaching complicated. But, daygame is easier in Monterrey with so many malls and parks.
