The Truth Behind Nightlife In New York City

This is a fantastic article I just found. Seems to apply primarily to the "it" spots in NYC and other big cities:

Those who indulge in this fantasy have been deluded into believing in the fabricated air of exclusivity maintained by club owners—a meticulously constructed chimera. The strategy is simple, yet ingenious: take a relatively ordinary experience and use clever marketing tactics to make the public to perceive it as extraordinary. These clever strategists further amplify this false perception by placing unnecessary limits on the amount of entrants—simply aiming to market the club as inaccessible to pedestrians.

This is true for many of the bigger nightclubs in American cities. They're basically selling an overpriced illusion, that when stripped down, is a fairly normal experience of drinking for a night out with a few extra bells and whistles. They usually appeal to a tourist crowd or a very young crowd that doesn't know any better, where the more seasoned locals avoid these places because they aren't worth the extra cost and bullshit for a manufactured experience.

If you're going somewhere to try to impress and show off how important you are - just for being there - doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of going out at night and drinking to have fun insteading parading your nightlife credentials?

Yeah, the article basically confirms what we've all discussed at some point. About how bottle service & table service basically killed the scene.

This is way to harsh on NYC...they should come to Moscow if they want to see nightlife bullshit and superficiality and waste. I actually find it enjoyable to go out in NYC compared to here.

And those damn Saudis sausaging up clubs and throwing away unearned money...can't wait until we get off our oil addiction.

Essentially, though, this is the essence of a nightclub - men are paying for access to women and demonstrate their social status, women want to access high status men and demonstrate their their own high status in order to get a mate. The more accessible a place is, the worse it will be for finding someone of a high social status. Duh.

If this author knew anything about conspicuous consumption and evolutionary psychology, especially Zahavi's handicap principle, he wouldn't be so cynical. There will always be a way to make money off of artificially manufacturing exclusivity in venues where men and women are trying to meet each other.

If you want to blame anything, blame hyperagamy, not NYC.

This article expressed what I've mostly felt about nightclubs for most of my life, bottle service has mostly made it a game you can only win if you're not playing.

We personally recall one occasion while entering a club that we witnessed a woman being rejected and told to return after losing 20 pounds.

Straight up.

I wonder if she listened. 20 pounds would be easy, and like so much of America, if women just lost 20 pounds the country could stand to make a comeback. Everywhere I go there, I just shake my head at the tragedy of so many pretty women who are just 20-40 pounds overweight.

Lol at the whole article.

Pretty much all it is saying is super popular "it" clubs are not good. That applies to the entire USA not just NYC.

Anything that says NYC is hard makes me sick. It's the largest city, population dense, long clock for drinking, logistics are good anywhere, your competition is stuck up bankers with no game and international women galore.

Basically saying NYC anything sucks means "I'm not good with all types of girls". Which means well... You suck.

I had a feeling that in NYC it was like this already. I am banging a promoter. I asked her about it and she did confirm all of this information on the article. The best way I see it is to become a promoter if possible as well.

1-Access to high end places. If you have been to a NYC club then you know it will be mostly backed with 6's,7's and 8's. No fuglys.

2-Access to slutty underage girls.

3-Free alcohol

4-Money for being there.

I don't think I need to make any more points. Plus the girls you bring to these places normally can't get in if it is not with a promoter. So in theory, these girls need you way more than you need them if they are really into partying. If I wasn't moving due to business I would persuade this with a passion. I have some ideas. If you are in New York city and want some ideas to start promoting PM me.

I don't think anybody is complaining about NYC nigh life but NYC night clubs. As West coast mentioned however it's just not about NYC but "high end" night clubs everywhere. This goes doubly for Las Vegas.

"The truth behind nightlife in New York City," at least as it pertains to getting laid, is that the city is full of beautiful girls who will never set foot in any of the clubs covered in that article.

If you are going through expense and hassle of getting into NYC's high-end nightlife venues just to meet chicks, you are making your life way too difficult.

The Truth Behind Nightlife In New York City

Always hated articles like this, especially being a guy in the scene...

Even WORST, if you search around you would find similar articles about the whole downtown/hipster/scenester club scene. Back when alot of those clubs were popping up articles were talking about how "NY following the french", "Too many hipster spots", etc. Then they would just go on about how it was a bunch of broke hipsters thinking there cool blahblahblah.

As for the "high end" scene, yes its all a marketing/illusion just don't take it seriously and enjoy the beauty of...
- Being around lots of gorgeous women
- Being in good venues and at times hearing "amazing" djs for free
- Understanding how PR and "social scene" influences the whole world
- Networking with some successful people
- Living a fun lifestyle revolving around "high end" nightlife

Bottomline, being one of those who was apart of both scenes, it just seemed stupid to talk about all this. One minute there like bottle service killed everything and then they're like "hipsters dont pay for shit". Also, who are "they" to say what's good or bad?? Like I hear many nightlife staff say...

"You go open a club if you think you're better at it..."

I have seen indepth how this stuff works, to see how one club could be super packed on a rainy monday says alot about their social influence. Without these people there would be no social events going on. At the sametime, I've seen bars/clubs/parties close almost as fast as they opened because they don't have that level of influence.

These club owners are personal friends of many well known people. I've personally seen on a monday night, bday of an owner of a dj company. Usher, Lil Jon, & Jermaine Dupri was hanging out. (eventually decided to do a few songs for maybe 10-15mins) The venue was SLAMMED PACKED and it was the first time in months I ran into my pornstar friend. (She came out due to dj owner)

There is one weekly event, that now is starting to get slammed pack each week. How'd all these people know about this? Why are they all coming here than say some other spot down the road?

All in all, regardless what city it is, they're very good at segmentation, they know how to bring the right people together. For instance, being a black guy I rarely was attracted to black chicks UNTIL I went to these venues and saw the most gorgeous black women. EVEN, when it was high end hiphop nights with rappers/sports players, the women looked hotter than chicks in music videos. I've seen chicks with the most ridiculous body proportions white, black, asian, etc.

Overall, I never take any of these articles serious, its still better than some dive bar.
